The speedometer is not waterproof or water resistant. It should not be installed or operated in any location which will be exposed to water or moisture. All HUD 13 digital speedometers are factory set to display speeds in kilometres per hour (kph). This can be changed so that speed is displayed in miles per hour (mph) as detailed in the Operating Instructions & Warranty.

Display Module - Dash MountingSelect a position on the dashboard, preferably directly in front of the driver and as close to the windscreen as possible, where the display can be clearly read down the light shield.Ensure that the proposed position will not interfere with the operation of the vehicle airbags, or any other vehicle controls, instruments or accessories. Also ensure that there is no obstruction between the top of the Display Module and the windscreen. The proposed position should also ensure that the Display Module, when installed, is wholly below a (theoretical) straight line from the driver’s eye position to the highest visible line of the vehicle bonnet. Before mounting the Display Module with the double sided adhesive pads provided, ensure that both surfaces are cleaned with a silicone release solvent. If necessary, use one of the Mounting Blocks supplied, to raise or tilt the Module for optimum viewing. If the dashboard shape or steering wheel obstruct the display, move the Module to an unobstructed position.

Display Module - Overhead MountingSelect a position on the overhead console, preferably directly in front of the driver, where the display can be clearly read down the light shield.Ensure that the proposed position will not interfere with the operation of the vehicle airbags, or any other vehicle controls, instruments or accessories. Also ensure that there is no obstruction between the Display Module and the windscreen. The proposed position should also ensure that the Display Module, when installed, is wholly above a (theoretical) straight line from the driver’s eye position to the highest transparent part of the vehicle windscreen. Before mounting the Display Module with the double sided adhesive pads provided, ensure that both surfaces are cleaned with a silicone release solvent. If necessary, use one of the Mounting Blocks supplied, to raise or tilt the Module for optimum viewing. If the console shape or other parts of the vehicle obstruct the display, move the Module to an unobstructed position.

Mounting BlocksIf the use of a Mounting Block is necessary, attach it to the base of the Display Module in the correct position using one of the Adhesive Pads. Using another Adhesive Pad, locate the Display Module in the correct position and press it firmly into place.

Install the first speedometer as set out in either the OBD II Cable Connection or J1939 Cable Connection sections of these instructions, including start up and initialization of the speedometer.Position and install the second speedometer in accordance with the general notes in the Installation section of these instructions. Do not install the Switch & Lead to this speedometer.Install the second speedometer by connecting one end of the Display Cable (RJ12 to RJ12 cable) to the ACC outlet on the first speedometer and the other end of this cable to the ACC outlet on the second speedometer.Start the vehicle engine. The first speedometer will start up and display the vehicle speed and the second speedometer will start up and display the same speed. It may take up to 30  seconds for the second speedometer display to start up after the first speedometer display has. When the vehicle engine is stopped, both displays will switch off.Note the following in relation to the second speedometer display:• it cannot be calibrated. It will show whatever speed (calibrated

or not) is shown on the first speedometer.• it cannot be set to a different speed unit display (KPH or MPH)

to the first speedometer. • it cannot have a separate overspeed alarm or separate

overspeed alarm settings. It will use the speed and overspeed alarm settings set on the first speedometer.

Installing Two DisplaysTwo HillSpeed HUD 13 speedometers can be installed in the same vehicle where there is a requirement for two separate additional speed displays. To carry out this type of installation the following are required:• one HillSpeed HUD 13 digital speedometer model to suit

the type of vehicle in which they are to be installed; either passenger or heavy vehicle type.

• a second HillSpeed HUD 13 digital speedometer. This can be of either model type as the OBD II Cable/J1939 cable will not be used.

• an RJ12 to RJ12 cable (6P/6C ‘straight through’ type) of suitable length for installation between the two HillSpeed Speedometers. This type of cable is available in various lengths from specialist electrical and electronics retailers. They are also available for purchase from Bogaard Distributors. This cable is not included with either model of the HillSpeed HUD 13 speedometer.

Refer to the general notes in the Installation section of these instructions and to Installation Diagram  3 on the following pages of these instructions.Note that Installation Diagram 3 shows Dash Mounting installation. Overhead Mounting installation uses the same connections and general arrangement.

Calib

rati

onTo determine whether calibration of the speedometer is required, legally drive the vehicle at a range of different speeds with an observer (passenger) checking and comparing the speeds displayed on the vehicle speedometer and the digital speedometer. If the speeds displayed are the same then calibration is not required. If they are different then calibration is required and can be carried out as follows:• Legally drive the vehicle to a known speed (higher than 40 kph

and less than 100 kph) as shown on the vehicle speedometer (say 60  kph). At that speed, click the digital speedometer Switch once. This will record the speed displayed on the digital speedometer (say 64 kph). It will also activate the Over Speed Warning System (which can be de-activated or changed as detailed in the Operating Instructions & Warranty after the calibration process is complete).

• Legally stop the vehicle. With it stationary and with the engine running, press and hold the Switch down until the speedometer display changes to cycling (in sequence) L.oN then b.On then O.FF then A.oN then S.dF then A.dF then I.oN then I.oF then Cal then L.oN again etc. Keep the Switch held down until Cal is displayed. When it is, let go of the Switch. The display will continue to show Cal.

• Press and hold the Switch down again. The display will change to show the recorded speed (in this example 64 kph) which will then increase by +1 kph each second to a maximum of +10 kph (+6 mph). It will then decrease by -1 kph to a minimum speed of -10 kph (-6 mph) below the recorded

speed. These will continue to cycle while the Switch is held down. When the speed which matches the speed which was shown on the vehicle speedometer in the first step (in this example 60 kph) is shown on the display, release the Switch.

• The Display will briefly show the calibrated speed (in this example 60 kph) and then return to show 0.

Calibration is complete and the digital speedometer will now display the same speed as the vehicle speedometer.Note that if calibration is not carried out correctly the speedometer will not display the correct speed.
