We welcomed Hazel Redmond from Ashburton to our April Dinner. Hazel is an inspirational young woman who has achieved many amazing milestones. At the age of 15 Hazel contracted the life threatening condition of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). The condition changed Hazel's life and literally changed her way of thinking as subjects like English and Maths no longer made sense so she turned her attention to art. Hazel was a high achiever at School and a competent sportswoman as well as always having a creative flair.
Hazel's dream came true when she applied to the Make-A-Wish-Foundation to meet top NZ fashion designer Karen Walker. Two years down the track Karen is Hazel's mentor and she recently laced up her running shoes and ran the Queenstown half-marathon to raise funds for the charity so close to her heart.
Now aged 20, Hazel is operating her own shop in Ashburton whilst working as an artist and freelance photographer as well as being a passionate fund raiser for her charity, the Make-A-Wish-Foundation.

A BIT OF HINDS HISTORY
Christchurch Press 25th September 1879.
Introduction of Gorse
In the 1870’s the Christchurch Press often inserted advertisements on behalf of Robert Wilkin and
Co., Wool Stores, Christchurch. In one dated 25th September 1879 and immediately under a
list of sections being put up for sale in the Hindhope subdivision of Hinds township there appears
a FOR SALE notice.
FOR SALE
“A large stock of English and American SEEDS of the Best Quality.” These included White,
and red clover, cow grass, trefoil, mangold, rye-grass, Timothy, Lucerne, Fescues, carrots and, yes
– really- seeds for growing GORSE!
No wonder then, that stories abound of the trouble and toil farmers and villagers endured to get
rid of this pesky, prickly plant which was originally grown for hedges as was the custom in
“Mother England.”
Gwen Mattingley who has been a resident of Hinds for over fifty years having moved from
Chertsey with her family as a young child, remembers when her family lived for some years in a
house in Gray Street. Their only neighbours were a Mr and Mrs Parsons, and further down the
road, a sly-grog establishment. And there was certainly plenty of gorse growing rampantly,
to a height of six feet, for almost the whole length of Gray Street. It provided many hiding
places for the local youngsters. By Lorraine Baughan

Golden Oldies Hockey TournamentThe Hinds Honeys Golden Oldies
Hockey Team recently hosted a
tournament on the weekend of 13-15
May. The weekend started off with a
registration evening held at the
Ashburton RSA where 21 teams, 305
players registered and enjoyed a night
of catching up with friends, raffles, food
& beverages. Thanks to the RSA for
their wonderful hospitality.
The opening ceremony commenced at 9.30 am on Saturday morning at the Southern
Rugby Football Club followed by games played on four fields. There were 5 Silver
grade teams & 16 Golden Oldies teams. The competitive streak is alive & well in
many of the players. The Hinds School Hockey Catering Subcommittee
provided & sold food for the day, a great effort by the team as it is a fairly
challenging task. Well done, we have had some awesome feedback.
We hosted a dinner at the
Ashburton Racecourse on the
Saturday night with a band playing
until midnight. Our theme was
medieval and the venue was
decorated accordingly, an
absolutely amazing effort. The
meal was catered by All Fed Up
Catering and we have had lots of
positive feedback regarding the
food.
The Sunday games started up again at 9.30 am, albeit a little “slower paced” than
the previous day. Our team then hosted a lunch for the 305 players and a few
helpers. Once again, the food was supplied by All Fed Up Catering and served
by our team, this was once again very well received. The teams then said their
farewells and we all look forward to meeting again next year in Timaru.
Hinds District News Page 5
As a whole our team were
very happy with the way
the whole weekend went,
we have since received
many thank you notes from
the visiting teams which is
awesome reward for a lot of
planning over the past 18
months. It was a great
team & community effort.
So once again, a huge
thank you to all involved,
it was great.
Golden Oldies Hockey TournamentI would like to take this opportunity to
thank the many people who helped us host
this very successful tournament. The
Lions Club of Hinds & Districts Inc.
were absolutely fantastic assisting us with
putting up & pulling down tents and
providing some sponsorship towards the
Sunday closing lunch.
We had 250 raffles prizes available, a lot of these were sourced from local
businesses, thanks heaps for your support. Special mention must go to the
Southern Rugby Football Club, the grounds were manicured to within an inch of
their life and we appreciate the work involved with that. Thanks to the bar staff
who helped quench the thirst of the many players on the hot & windy days. Pete
Lowe had a huge mission of resurrecting some hockey goals that haven’t seen the
light of day for many years, well done, they were perfect.
We had the loan of tents from Neumanns Tyres, Property Brokers, Versatile,
PGG, Farmlands & we really appreciate their support. We organised local
umpires for all of the games and as always can be a thankless task but our team
very much appreciated the time & effort this crew provided during the two days of
play.

HAVE FUN!“Hinds playcentre”
By Nicole & Maria
St John came to our Centre, with a mini Ambulance. The tamariki enjoyed dressing up in the
Ambulance gear and hearing the siren. We also enjoyed a visit to Mayfield Playcentre, love
watching the children interact so naturally.During the school holidays, some of our mums had a tidy
up and rearrange; the awesome new layout inside, makes
the Centre look much bigger. As well as the inside, a big
clean-up happened inside the shed. Dedicated areas for all
our outdoor toys were created, so hopefully this will help
keep everything at easy access for everyone. Our outdoor
area is a work in progress and we hope to update you very
soon with plans for our new space. We are also planning to
get the wall climbing attachments, onto the fort very soon.
Our mother’s day raffle was a fantastic success. We sold 380 tickets and raised a massive
$572. Our lucky winner was Skye Howie, hope your gran enjoys her fabulous hamper. Thank
you to everyone for all of your support. We purchased a new ride on and play mat for wet
inside days.
Here’s to a fun filled Term Two!
Welcome Term Two!! We had a great start to the
term, with Mother’s Day activities and the
tamariki settling back into Playcentre routine.
We have had a busy few weeks at Hinds
Playcentre. We had a trip to Peel Forest, walking
to the big tree and a crawled through the fairy
stump. Great fun exploring the forest, followed
by a picnic in the sunshine!

HINDS SCHOOL,Principals Thought
We are already half way through Term 2. The 1st of June as seen us lose two families moving to
other districts with the Dairy Change over. We have welcomed three new families to the school
this term. We wish the families leaving us all the best and warmly welcome new families to our
Hinds Community.
This term we have our triannual Board of Trustees elections. I would like to thank the
current Board of Trustees for their commitment to our students, their support of the staff
and their passion for our school. Several Board members are not re-standing and I want to
acknowledge their work and thank them. Next Friday 10th June Board of Trustees Election
voting closes, with our first new Board Meeting on 16th June.
Our students have been busy learning at school and making the most of learning
opportunities. On 31st May 14 of our senior students travelled to Christchurch to attend the
Halogen Young Leaders Day. The Young Leaders Days are a series of events presented
nationally, which showcase inspirational and motivational keynote speakers who share their
leadership experience and expertise with students, with the aim of developing leadership skills
and aspirations in our students. Two of our Senior students have shared their experiences
of the day.
On May the 31st some of the year 7&8's went to the National Young Leaders Day. We had to be at school
by 7:30am. Then we went to Longbeach School to pick up the year 8's from their school. When we got to
Horncastle Arena we found our seats and waited for about ten minutes until we started.
We had lots of inspirational speakers like Brylie Mills , Johnny Wilson, and loads of other speakers. My
favorite speaker was Billy Graham who was a NZ Boxer and in 2012 got New Zealander of the year. He
bought a church one day and now it is a Boxing Academy. At the end we had a performance from Dave
Baxter from Avalanche City. He sang Inside Out and Love, Love, Love. The day was a fun and awesome
day and I learnt lots. Jed Syme
Yesterday I went to Halogen Young Leaders Day with some of my friends, We had to be at school at
7:30am. It was at 15min bus ride to Longbeach School and from there it was a 1-1/2 hour ride to Horn
Castle Arena. We had to put wrist bands on so the security guards would let us in. Once we were in we went
to our seats and waited for 10min. Once the show got started our first speaker Billy Graham came out. Billy
was a bit naughty when he was younger and he even talked like a little Maori boy because his friends were
Maoris. The local cop found Billy and got him into boxing at the local gym. Their gym wasn't the best gym
but the teacher was a master boxer. Billy was boxing other people at the age of 16. At the age of 64 Billy won
the New Zealander of the year award and now runs his own gym.
Our second speaker Zane Scarborough was an attitude manager for schools. Zane has spoken to over
200,000 kiwis about our potential.
Our third speaker James Beck taught us that you don't get to choose who you are but you get to choose your
attitude. When James was younger he had trouble so his teacher helped him. James got into hockey. When
James was nine they made it into the finals for hockey and at the last minute James scored the winning goal
for the team but he used the curved side of the stick. James knew he did the wrong thing. He told the ref
and the game went into over time and the other team scored causing them to lose but he knew he did the
right thing.
It was an awesome day and I’m really pleased I got to go. I learnt a lot. Bradley Isherwood

It was really good fun, I met a lot of other children from around Mid Canterbury who were also part of the cast, I enjoyed performing on stage. Thank you very much to all those who came to watch the show and to our sponsors, we appreciate your support of the Ashburton Variety Theartre”

We are continuing our enrichment programme on Friday afternoons. This term the students
selected learning opportunities with building – junior and senior groups, gymnastics – junior and
senior group, sign language, puppet making, coding, learning to blog, and gardening. If you
have a spare hour on Friday afternoon we would appreciate your time as the building groups
need more adult assistance. We are also on the look out for building supplies such as pieces of
wood, pipe, paint, anything old that the students could upcycle. If you are able to help out
please contact Brigid at the office on 3037208.

There was a very good documentary on TV 3 last week about the New Zealand Education
system and schools today. If you wish you can view this by going to TV3 On Demand, the
programme is called “World Class—Inside NZ Education: A Special Report”. This
documentary looks at the changing face of education for students in today’s world, our current
education practice and overseas research suggest the key elements for success for our students
in an education system. There are significant challenges in our current education system that are
not complimentary to student learning and student holistic development. It is a very good watch
giving us all a helpful insight to understanding the changing world children of today face.
On Tuesday 21st June Hinds Students will participate in the Mid
Canterbury Schools Music Festival, tickets are $14 each and can be
purchased at the Event Centre. We have a very talented choir who
have worked hard in preparation for the festival. Our students sing in
the mass choir and perform Hinds School items, and will feature two
talented soloists in Ashley Bryant and Olivia Fox.

Lowcliffe- Coldstream Hall Society
The Lowcliffe - Coldstream Hall Society met for its Annual General Meeting at
the start of June. During this meeting it was discussed that the hall had not
been used as much as it could have. As such, the Society is organising two
events for the coming months:
─ The Annual Pot Luck Meet and Greet. Successfully held last year, this
dinner event allows everyone in the district, new and old, to catch up
before the calving season begins. It will be held on the 1st of July at the
hall, beginning around5.30pm. We ask that attendees bring a plate of finger food.
─ The 'Main Event'.
For the first time in years, the Hall Society is inviting members of the
community to a ball at the hall. A tentative date has been set for October
15, 2016. Pencil it in your diaries and please stay tuned for more information!
If you or your family or group would like to rent the hall for an event, the
Society has very reasonable rates.

Community Energy Action (CEA) has worked in many partnerships over the years, one of whichhas been the Healthy Homes program, helping kiwi families keep warm and healthy in their homesby providing free insulation, heating, advice and recycled thermally lined curtains. The programme which started in late 2011 and finished late 2014, was a collaboration betweenCEA, the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB), the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority(EECA) and Environment Canterbury (ECAN), with funding contributed by Orion and MainPower. The Healthy Homes program proposed that insulating homes, therefore making them warmer, drierand healthier, would have a positive effect on the health of the residents, particularly those who hadbeen hospitalised with cold related health issues prior to the programme.CEA has provided over 1500 insulation installations from 2011 to 2014. Of those, researchconducted on 900 of the highest health needs patients shows that nearly 30% of those patientsremained out of hospital, after CEA interventions. This resulted in an overall reduction in hospitalbed days and contributed to savings for the CDHB’s resources of nearly one million dollars. BothCEA and the CDHB are delighted with the results of this program. Chief Executive of CEA, CarolineShone says “the program was extremely successful for the community, and whilst the cost ofinsulation is a one off, the benefits last for years. These results shows how successful collaborativepartnerships can be. However, despite this great work, we estimate that there are still 30,000-50,000 low income homes with inadequate or no insulation in Canterbury alone. A warm, dry houseis critical to the mental and physical health of New Zealanders, as well as benefitting communityresources”.Funding for free insulation through EECA’S Warm Up New Zealand Program is still available, however only until June. CEA provides subsidies for insulation, heating assistance, free recycledcurtains and energy efficiency advice for all in Canterbury. Call 0800 GET WARM, or visitwww.cea.co.nz to find out more. CONSUMERS SOUGHT TO ADVISE
ON ASHBURTON’S HEALTH SERVICESNominations are being sought from community members to join a group that will advise on
the design and delivery of health services in the Ashburton district. The Ashburton
Consumer Forum is being established to get advice from everyday health consumers
on issues and ideas for the Ashburton district’s health services.
Anna Dalzell, who is facilitating health transformation work in Ashburton, said a
consumer could be anyone in the community. “We all need health services at some point in
our lives so consumers are pretty much everyone in the community.” “We’re looking for 10
to 15 people who are reliable, able to earn the trust of the community, and above all, able
to seek out and bring the views and ideas of the community to discussions about health
services in Ashburton. The commitment will initially be a monthly early evening meeting but
should settle to approximately quarterly meetings as required.” “If you are passionate about
the people in your community being able to access the best possible services and care from
the Ashburton health sector, and can provide a balanced and constructive view of service
change, we would be interested in receiving your nomination.”
The Ashburton Consumer Forum will advise the Ashburton Health Services and the
Ashburton Service Level Alliance, a collective alliance of healthcare leaders, professionals,
providers and consumers guiding the transformation of healthcare services in Ashburton.
Mrs Dalzell said the group will play an important role in ongoing redesign work occurring in
Ashburton health. “In Canterbury we’re working towards an integrated health system that
provides the right care, by the right person, in the right place and at the right time. “Services
that are organised around the unique needs of people in the Ashburton district while also
aligning with the wider health system are important for the sustainability of Ashburton’s
health services.”
Visit www.ccn.health.nz/JoinCCN to view the position description and express your interest
in joining the Ashburton Consumer Forum. Applications close 1 July 2016
Rural Recycling Drop-off FacilitiesCouncil provides 11 self-serve rural recycling drop-off facility sites in the district, including
one in Hinds (James Street, behind Hinds Tavern) and one a at Willowby (Longbeach
Road, beside the school).
You may have noticed some changes to the resource drop off sites over the last few months.
You can now recycle plastic (numbered 1-7) and all recyclables, apart from glass, no longer
need to be sorted. This is now done at the Timaru Materials Recycling Facility where the
recycling is processed.
There are also new glass recycling bins at the sites. We have had feedback that they are
sometimes hard to access, due to their height. We are working on installing a ramp
using concrete blocks created from waste concrete and gravel. Council appreciates this is
not as quick as one would like, but we hope to have this completed by the end of April
For further information on the rural sites see Councils website

The goal for the HDCA this year was to publish a bi-monthly newsletter that gets dropped inRD3, RD4, RD5 and Hinds township mail boxes.
In these newsletters there is up to date information about activities that have happened, upcoming events, sporting and cultural activities that are available, what local groups havebeen up to, notes from Council, basically anything that is important to Hinds and thesurrounding district!
In order for this to be successful we need support from local businesses in the form ofadvertising and would also appreciate your backing by supplying articles from groups, clubsor organisations that you belong to. This is a great way to let the district know what ishappening or could be happening in the next few months. Articles will be placed in thenewsletter for free and there is a small cost associated with advertising.
