Small kids are taught this shloka (verse) when they start school. Maybe not anymore in English medium schools in India. But in the Sunday School (culture/heritage schools) abroad, Indian families still teach this. Maybe they miss the culture more than those in India. It is always true that most of us do not know the value of something unless we don't have it. Going out of India, parents feel the need of self-identity, and focus much more on the culture. The divinity of learning, knowledge

2018 Devshayani Ekadashi ON 23-JULY-2018 Devshayani Ekadashi is the one that comes during the Shuklapaksha (waxing phase) in the month of Ashada (June-July). This is also called as Ashadi Ekadashi in the name of the month.
Devshayani Ekadashi is highly special as indicated by its many names including Maha Ekadashi, Ashadi Ekadashi, Toli Ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi, Devpodhi Ekadashi and Hari Sayana Ekadasi. In the state of Ma-harashtra, this Ekadashi is popular in thename of Ashadi Ekadashi and the annual Padharpur Yatra or holy pilgrimage to the Padharpur temple comes to an end on this day. In the south, this day is identified as Toli Ekadashi. As per the popular custom in the Vaishnavite Mutts, the inmates wear heated seals on their bodies called as Tapta Mudra Dharana.
Why Devshayani Ekadashi is so popular ensues from the idea that Lord Vishnu chooses to go to a long sleep in the Ksheer Sagar (milky ocean) on this day.
Therefore, this day is considered to be ideal to propiti-ate Lord Vishnu and Mata Mahalakshmi. Starting on this day, the sleep of the Lord called as Yoga NIdra stretches over four months called as Chaturmas. When the Lord wakes up after the sleep at the end of four months, the day is heralded as Prabodhini Ekadashi or Dev Uthani Ekadashi falling on the Karthika (October – November) month.
On the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, people take a ho-ly bath in the morning and install the idol of Lord Vishnu in their altars. This idol or image is given a
holy bath and decorated with flowers and yellow clothes. The whole of the altar is decorated with flo-ral, mango leaf and festoon hangings. People make special dishes with dry fruits and milk as chief ingre-dients. Following the arati or waving of camphor in front of the idol, the observers of this vrat partake the Prasad offered to the Lord. As per their interest, peo-ple also observe strict fasting procedure on this day.
Once there lived a king called Mandata who was just and pious. He took great care of his subjects and peace and prosperity reined over the empire for a long time. Once during an unfortunate turn of events, a se-vere famine and draught struck the kingdom and a lot of people were dying due to starvation and disease. Mandata went on a voyage over a long distance to seek remedy for the plight that had struck the empire.
On the way, he met Sage Angira, who enjoined him to observe the Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat. He came back to the empire and gathered the public telling his mo-tive. A large gathering diligently observed a strict fasting and puja procedures on the Devshayani Eka-dashi day and there were torrential rains blessing the kingdom with prosperity once again. Thus, the ob-servance of Devshayani Ekadashi is so efficacious in bestowing prosperity upon people’s lives.

2018 GURU PURNIMA ON 27-JULY-2018
Hindus attach paramount importance to spir-itual gurus—their teachers on matters of reli-gion and spiritual growth. Gurus are regarded as a link between the individual and the im-mortal, to such an extent that they are some-times equated with God. Just as the moon shines by reflecting the light of the sun and thereby glorifies it, all disciples can shine like the moon by reflecting the spiritual light emit-ted from their gurus. It's no surprise, then, that Hinduism offers a sacred day devoted to hon-oring the guru.
What Is Guru Purnima? The full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad (July-August) is observed as the auspi-cious day of Guru Purnima, a day sacred to the memory of the great sage Maharshi Veda Vyasa. All Hindus are indebted to this ancient saint who edited the four Vedas and who wrote the 18 Puranas, Mahabharata, and the Srimad Bhagavatam. Even Dattatreya, re-garded as the guru of gurus, was himself edu-cated by Guru Purnima.
Significance of the Guru Purnima Cele-bration On this day, all spiritual aspirants and devo-tees worship Vyasa in honor of his divine per-sonage and all disciples perform a 'puja' of
their respective spiritual preceptor, or Gurudevs.
This day is also of deep significance to farm-ers, for it heralds the beginning of the much-needed seasonal rains, when the advent of cool showers ushers in fresh life in the fields.
Symbolically, this is a good time to begin your spiritual lessons, thus spiritual seekers tradi-tionally begin intensifying their spiritual sad-hana—their pursuit of spiritual goals—on this day.
The period Chaturmas ("four months") begins from this day. In the past, this was the time when wandering spiritual masters and their disciples settled down in a single place to study and discourse on the Brahma Sutras composed by Vyasa—a time to conduct Ve-dantic discussions.
Swami Sivananda asks:
"Do you realize now the sacred sig-nificance and the supreme im-portance of the Guru's role in the evolution of man? It was not with-out reason that the India of the past carefully tended and kept alive the lamp of Guru-Tattva. It is therefore not without reason that India, year after year, age after age, commemo-rates anew this ancient concept of the Guru, adores it and pays homage to it again and again, and thereby reaffirms its belief and allegiance to it. For, the true Indian knows that the Guru is the only guarantee for the individual to transcend the bond-age of sorrow and death, and experi-ence the Consciousness of the Reali-ty."

GURU PURNIMA– CONTD
Deserving aspirants are initiated into the Holy Traditional Steps for Cele-brating Guru Purnima At the Sivananda Ashram, Rishikesh, the Guru Purnima is celebrated every year on a grand scale:
All aspirants awake at Brahmamuhurta, at 4 o'clock a.m. They meditate on the Guru and chant his prayers.
Later in the day, the sacred worship of the Guru's Feet is performed. Of this worship it is said in the Guru Gita: Dhyaana moolam guror murtih; Pooja moolam guror padam; Mantra moolam guror vakyam; Moksha moolam guror kripa
The Guru's form should be meditated up-on; the feet of the Guru should be wor-shiped; his words are to be treated as a sacred Mantra; his Grace ensures final liberation.
Sadhus and Sannyasins are then wor-shiped and fed at noon.
There is continuous Satsang during which discourses are held on the glory of de-votion to the Guru in particular, and on spiritual topics in general.
Order of Sannyas, as this is a highly aus-picious occasion.
Devout disciples fast and spend the whole day in prayer. They also take fresh re-solves for spiritual progress.
A Guru's Advice on How to Observe the Holy Day Swami Sivananda recommends:
Wake up at Brahmamuhurta (at 4 a.m.) on this holiest day. Meditate on the lotus feet of your Guru. Men-tally pray to him for his Grace, through which alone you can attain
Self-realisation. Do vigorous Japa and meditate in the early morning hours.
After the bath, worship the lotus feet of your Guru, or his image or picture with flowers, fruits, incense, and camphor. Fast or take only milk and fruits the whole day.
In the afternoon, sit with other dev-otees of your Guru and discuss with them the glories and teachings of your Guru.
Alternatively, you may observe the vow of silence and study the books or writings of your Guru, or mental-ly reflect upon his teachings. Take fresh resolves on this holy day, to tread the spiritual path in accord-ance with the precepts of your Guru.
At night, assemble again with other devotees, and sing the Names of the Lord and the glories of your Guru. The best form of worship of the Guru is to follow his teachings, to shine as the very embodiment of his teachings, and to propagate his glo-ry and his message.

The chariots are painted with bright colors and the tops are covered with red, black, yellow, or green canopies. Lord Jagannath uses red and yellow, Lord Balaram uses red and green, while Goddess Subhadra uses red and black. All the chariots have separate features to distinguish from each other.
Lord Jagannath's chariot is called as Chakradhwaja or Nandhighosa, which simply describe about tumultu-ous and blissful sound. 45 feet tall, 16 wheels, 65 tons weigh, Garuda on its crest along with four white wooden horses are the specific features of Lord Jag-annath's Rath.

Goddess Subhadra's cart is called Padmadhwaja or Darpadalan, which means destroyer of pride. It has a lotus on its crest, uses 12 wheels, and is drawn by four red wooden horses.
On the celebration day devotees pull the chariots till the Gundicha temple. This time in Rath Yatra Puri 2018 also you will see the same celebration but wide more spiritual excitement. Because it is the Nabakale-bar Rath Yatra where all the Lords will get new ava-tar after nineteen years. The return journey of Lords is also celebrated as Bahuda yatra. The deities reach the Puri temple on Ekadasi day, than attired in new costumes and this new form of the idols is known as ‘Suna Vesa’ . So come to be a part of Puri Rath Yatra 2018 to see new looks of deities and get blessing for
your lifetime.
2018 Jagannath Rath Yatra ON 14-JULY-2018 Rath Yatra or Jatra is the celebration of the Lord Jagannath, who is believed to be the Lord of Uni-verse's journey towards his aunt's house. Though it is a Hindu shrine but this chariot festival is not associated with any particular denomination of Hinduism entirety, though there are several com-mon aspects with Vaishnavaism, Saivism, Shak-tism, Buddhism and Jainism.
Jagannath Rath Yatra is more than five thou-sand years old and the most spiritual thing is, the celebration follows all the same rituals from its starting. There would not seen any changes in this festival. Traditionally the Rath Yatra festival is celebrated annually in Puri, Odisha. During this world renowned festival, lord Jagannatha is wor-shipped along with his brother lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra.

" BETTER PARENTING " – TALK BY WOMEN & MAT-RIMONIAL WING OF HCK On the 16th of June 2018, Saturday the Women & Matri-monial Wing of Hindu Council of Kenya organized a talk on "Better Parenting". The speakers were Ms. Vasha Vora and Ms. Bindi Shah, both well known Counsellors. " It is very important for us to be responsible parents and develop ourselves too while maintaining the structure and discipline", said Ms. Sabina Bindal, Directorate – Women & Matrimonial Wing of HCK. It was an interactive session and the enthusiastic parents were involved throughout the program. The talk not only enriched us but made us revisit our definition of Better Parenting and how the 3 C's – CONSISTENCY, COMMIT-MENT AND CHOICES are important in responsible par-enting. Groups were made and each group was given a question to discuss and give the answer collectively. Parents shared their ideas and even their personal experiences to which everyone felt connected.

You can slay this winter!
By: Muskan Gupta
It’s finally time to talk winter fashion! As the sun is starting
to barely grace us with its presence, we can’t help but feel
aggrieved that the sun is fading. However, I think you may
feel differently after reading this article. As we discuss this
winter’s fashion trends and styles. It’s all about being
classy and stylish, what’s not to love?!
Perfecting an office look!
Having to choose between fashion and warmth in a winter
season can be a dilemma that plagues us very. single.
morning. Now if that isn’t hard enough as it is, but needing
to look polished? This can be too much to ask for! Howev-
er, there are many fashion formulas that prove fashion
and warmth are mutually exclusive. They require minimum
effort and lead to maximum results. For example: styling a
crème blouse with knee-length pencil skirt and tights. Add-
ing a belt can help in exaggerating a toned waist. Including
boots and simple jewelry gives one a very lean look. Con-
sequently, for men slipping on a thick coat can imperson-
ate a feel of a blazer displaying a well-coordinated look.
Staying cute and casual!
Just cause its cold outside doesn’t mean you can’t have as
much fun getting dressed as you did during the summer
and look just as stylish. Although, I agree there is some-
thing about the holidays that make us just want to wrap
ourselves up in
sweaters, blan-
kets and all
things cozy. So,
whether you
decide to Netflix
and chill or
head out for
some casual
weekend fun,
I’ve got some
ideas that can spice up your look. For example: pairing up
your simple black pair of jeans with a comfy hoodie or a
long-sleeved shirt seems effortless. Furthermore, slipping
on a scarf and pairing it with light jewelry and shoes. Men,
on the other hand, can spice up their style by putting on
jackets, cardigans or maybe even rolled up sweater with a
checked shirt underneath.
Dress to impress!
Occasions tend to come up anytime any day. Whether it
be a formal party, a show, an event, you must always be
prepared! When it comes to semi-formal event attire,
choose from basic wardrobe staples that set the right tone
for a party look. Some basic looks include:
Black dresses
Cocktail dresses
www.hck.or.ke/ [email protected] 21
Dressy jumpsuits
Disco pants + a black sleek blazer
Note: including heels to your outfit raises the bar
along with the right jewelry and accessories. Men
however can simply include:
Leather jackets
Scarfs
Overcoats
DIY TIME!
As you all may know, cute hand gloves
can be great for show and warmth. To-
day I have an easier way to make these
hand gloves.
Things you will need:
Your choice socks
A pair of scissors
Method:
-Place your hand over the sock to meas-
ure out the size you desire.
-line out the position for your fingers
and your thumb.
-cut out the unnecessary portions and
voila! There you have it.
-If you please, go ahead and cut out
patterns from different materials and
sew it on your glove.

THE BOY AND THE APPLE TREE
A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it
everyday. He climbed to the treetop, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the
tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by, the little boy had grown up and he no
longer played around the tree every day.
One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad.
“Come and play with me”, the tree asked the boy.
“I am no longer a kid, I do not play around trees any more”
the boy replied.
“I want toys. I need money to buy them.”
“Sorry, but I do not have money, but you can pick all my apples
and sell them. So, you will have mon-ey.”
The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree and
left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples.
The tree was sad.
One day, the boy who now turned into a man returned and
the tree was excited.
“Come and play with me” the tree said.
“I do not have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter.
Can you help me?”
“Sorry, but I do not have any house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house.” So the
man cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the
man never came back since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the man re-turned and the tree was delighted.
“Come and play with me!” the tree said.
“I am getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” said the man.
“Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.”
So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.
Finally, the man returned after many years. “Sorry, my boy. But I do not have anything for you
anymore. No more apples for you”, the tree said. “No problem, I do not have any teeth to bite” the
man replied.
“No more trunk for you to climb on.” “I am too old for that now” the man said.
“I really cannot give you anything, the only thing left is my dying roots,” the tree said with tears.
“I do not need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years,” the man replied.
“Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest, come sit down with me and rest.”
The man sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears.
This is a story of everyone. The tree is like our parents. When we were young, we loved to play with
our Mum and Dad. When we grow up, we leave them; only come to them when we need something
or when we are in trouble. No
matter what, parents will always
be there and give everything they
could just to make you happy.
You may think the boy is cruel to
the tree, but that is how all of us
treat our parents. We take them
for granted; we don’t appreciate
all they do for us, until it’s too
late.
