two feet. Since then, Khin not only stood strong – she also sprouted wings and learned to soar to greater heights.

Khin chose to travel all the way to Hong Kong for her higher education. “Ever since I was in middle school, I always longed for quality education. More so, since I could compare the poor education system of my home country Myanmar with what was being offered abroad. However, studying abroad costs a lot, so I had to get a scholarship to achieve my dream.”This dream turned into reality when the Hinrich Foundation chose Khin as a scholar. She enjoyed every moment at HKBU, particularly how the university emphasizes two-way communication between educators and students. She feels that classroom discussions and group presentations help build team spirit and confidence, which cannot be taught in a traditional, theoretical way. “The university also holds conferences with well-known guest speakers like Jake Bernstein, the Pulitzer Prize winner. I never thought I would meet such a distinguished speaker,” Khin said with pride. This kind of interaction benefits students like her, as Jake’s life experiences have inspired many of them to stretch their own boundaries.

to uplift people of my country, and open further possibilities for Myanmar.”

Continuing educationSoon, Khin hopes to move to a senior management role. She takes great pride in achieving her goals according to the timeline she has set for herself. She is optimistic that she will be an experienced manager by the time she turns 40. The fact that she has achieved her targets as planned is in itself a winning moment for her.

Improving livelihood As a Hinrich Global Trade Leader scholar, she participated in the foundation’s Export Assistance Program (EAP) after graduation. She aimed to improve the livelihood of people in Myanmar by helping small and medium-scale export suppliers increase sales and offering them marketing assistance through online and print media as well as trade shows. Khin was instrumental in providing training to suppliers on a one-on-one and group basis for them to learn the importance of marketing and handling Requests for Information (RFIs). She helped produce Sourcing Reports about the furniture, flooring, decking and garment industries of Myanmar. She also conducted research and interviews to provide international buyers with the Industry Overview and Product Pricing information in the reports. She also promoted the Hinrich Foundation on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Khin is grateful to the Hinrich Foundation for helping her fulfill her dream of quality education and giving her the opportunity to help her home country of Myanmar rejoin the global economy.

Myanmar Times, the country’s premier English language newspaper, from 2005 to 2011. She received the Hinrich Foundation scholarship in 2011, which enabled her to build her career in export. From 2012 to 2014, she served at the Hinrich Foundation as Export Consultant, relentlessly working to open Myanmar to the world and bringing trade opportunities into her country. From 2014 to 2015, she worked at the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), where she was a Program Officer who established media contacts. Her responsibilities included writing press releases and newsletters; maintaining program documentation, research and

analysis; maintaining media relations; and monitoring media coverage. Khin wears many hats, being creative and effective as a communicator with her can-do attitude. The one hat she wears with most grace, however, is that of a learner. She is on a quest for knowledge and looking to add another postgraduate degree to her already brimming resume. “I would like to use my skills and knowledge

Khin (far right) enjoyed every moment of her study at Hong Kong Baptist University, where she and her contemporaries cultivated a positive team spirit.

Best of all, Khin played a pivotal role in communicating with relevant ministries and agencies, such as the Ministry of Commerce, Myanmar Timber Merchants Association, Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), The Center for People and Forests (RECOFTC), and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).Khin also organized trade leadership workshops with partner associations, and became a reliable point person between buyers and suppliers.

Unitycolleagues“A great team works collaboratively to achieve a goal!” Khin believes in treating colleagues with respect and patience. She recalls how, in 2014, they had to prepare for the KOICA president’s meeting with different ministry leaders to discuss development assistance. They served as the bridge between the media and the ministers. “Everything about that event was smooth and successful because of the great team working behind the scenes!”

Learning from SeniorsKhin feels grateful to the Hinrich Foundation for helping her fulfill her dream of obtaining quality education and giving her the opportunity to help her country rejoin the global economy.

“The Hinrich Foundation greatly impacted my education and helped me to develop livelihood for my people. If a company gets an export order, chances are, it will hire more locals to complete it, which will in turn generate income for them and improve their livelihood.”

In a way, Khin is like a sponge that soaks up knowledge gained from every encounter with colleagues and mentors. She feels

indebted to every senior she has worked with and who has influenced her attitude and work ethic.

“A senior once told me that I do not need to impress myself, and I do not need to feel small either. The best way to move forward is to accept yourself as you are.” The learning has stayed with her, and she tries to live up to it at all times.

Upgrading skillsKhin believes she can contribute creatively in a management role. As always she is moving steadfast in the right direction. She is currently upgrading her skills by taking an online MBA course with Asia e University. “When I look all around me, I can see people trying harder and harder to achieve their ambitions. That serves as a reminder for me not to be left behind!”

Cultivating positivity“I would urge each aspiring person to see the world with positivity. When you view your work and everything around you with good intentions, you will bring about a positive change,” Khin advises future and current Hinrich scholars. “The best thing is to be around people who will lift you up.”

From 2014 to 2015, Khin worked at the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), where she was Program Officer and a crucial point person during events.

“Be around people who will lift you up,” Khin (first row, far left) advises future Global Trade Lead-

ers of the Hinrich Foundation.
