Greetings,
Thank you for supporting the Hinsdale business community and the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce. Hinsdale is a community that is built on its businesses. Whether it is small or large, our economy thrives thanks to the tireless efforts of business owners and their employees. With your determination, we are able to build a vibrant and prosperous community for our residents, merchants, business partners, and visitors to enjoy for years to come. Founded on May 27, 1924 the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce has been in operation for more than 90 years, representing the voice of business in Hinsdale and creating a legacy of serving the entire community. The 45th edition of the Hinsdale Community Guide is presented to you through the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce. You will find this publication a useful directory of information, including services and opportunities in our village. The Hinsdale Chamber hosts several events throughout the year. In the summer, we have our Farmers Market (runs from June through October), Fine Arts Festival (International Artist Exhibits), Sidewalk Sale, and Garage Sale. We have our Fall Festival in October, and finally, the beautiful Christmas Walk in December. Our most popular summertime favorite, Uniquely Thursdays, is held every Thursday evening from June to August, featuring live entertainment, food, drink, and local merchant participation. Also, all community members, visitors, and shoppers are invited to visit the Chamber website (hinsdalechamber.com) to sign up for “Hot Deals” to receive weekly discounts, coupons, and certificates from area Chamber businesses via email. In addition, the Chamber works in partnership with the Village Economic Development Commission to maintain, develop, and promote the entire Hinsdale business community. The fresh-cut greenery decorating the village during the holiday season, and American flags displayed throughout village streets on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are provided by the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Hinsdale, which serves our community in other innumerable ways. We also work closely with the village and local businesses to promote Small Business Saturday (Saturday after Thanksgiving). Please remember to shop and dine local. Our accomplishments are made possible through the cooperation and support of our local businesses, commercial and professional people, village, and community working together.

HINSDALE’S COMMUNITY
BANK!
What do we love the most about this community? The people we share it with! That’s why we support the families here, the local businesses and the charitable organizations, too. Beyond providing banking solutions, we also take pride in giving back to the people who work to make this area so great. Why? Because this isn’t just home to us; it’s home to all of us. And, as a true community bank, we know that when we all do our part, we can help make Hinsdale better for everyone.

Waste ManagementSOLID WASTE
The village has contracted with Republic Services for residential refuse collection. Residents have the option of either curbside or backdoor collection service. All 65- and 95-gallon toters will be provided by Republic Services. If a resident wishes to use their own 35-gallon container, they must have back door pick up. Homeowners age 65 and older are eligible for a senior discount. Any additional refuse or large items must be placed at the curb with a sticker on each item. For additional refuse information, there is a link on our website: villageofhinsdale.org/departments/public_services/garbage_waste_disposal
LANDCSAPE WASTE
All grass, leaves, shrubbery, vine trimmings, and the like must be contained in 34-gallon biodegradable paper bags and placed on the curb for pickup on the primary collection day. One sticker must be placed on each 34-gallon biodegradable paper bag. Plastic bags or cans containing yard waste will be left uncollected even if there is a sticker on them. You may not mix solid waste and landscape waste. Landscape waste will be picked up between April 1 and December 1 of each year.
RECYCLING
Recyclables will be picked up on the primary pickup day. Items that are included in the village’s curbside recycling program are computer paper, packing paper, white paper, glass bottles and jars, colored paper, aluminum cans, foil, trays, and junk mail.
PLASTIC NO. 1-7
Magazines, aerosol cans (empty), phone books, paint cans (empty and dried), paper grocery bags, milk/juice cartons, chipboard/paperboard, drink boxes, newspapers.
Sewer Use Charges A sewer use charge of 15 percent of the net water bill is made for all homes and businesses connected to the village sanitary sewer system. These funds are used to keep sanitary sewers in good working order through a program of cleaning, maintenance, and repair. Some homes in Hinsdale near 55th Street are served by sewers owned and maintained by the Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District (a separate governmental agency). The Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District also levies a sewer use charge that is billed to each home in Hinsdale served by the district. That sewer use charge is used to pay the cost of collection and treatment of sewer wastes. Contact Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District at 630-323-3299.
Zoning Hinsdale’s zoning ordinance is strictly enforced. The zoning ordinance regulates land use, setbacks, side yards, rear yards, heights, intensity of use, and off-street parking. Appeals for variations from the zoning ordinances may be filed with the Zoning Board of Appeals. For more information, contact the building commissioner at 630-789-7036.
Air Pollution Control Hinsdale’s air pollution control ordinance prohibits all open burning, including backyard incineration in a container of any type or the burning leaves or any other materials on private or public property. Fires for the purpose of barbecuing or fires in indoor, private fireplaces are permitted provided the smoke coming from these fires does not exceed the limits of white or very light gray smoke as set forth in the ordinance. Odd numbered street addresses water on odd number days. A temporary permit is available to water newly seeded or sodded grass. Contact the village at 630-789-7070 if you have questions. There are so many reasons to live, work, and raise families in Hinsdale—world class schools, beautiful homes, a sense of community and helping others—not to mention a diverse range of faiths, stellar community events, and shopping and dining that rivals downtown Chicago. Take a look around and it’s obvious that our retail districts are thriving. “I’m excited to be a part of this upcoming year in Hinsdale,” says John Berger, Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce chairman of the board. “With 97 percent of our retail properties occupied, our business community has never been better.” Aside from smart repurposing of historic downtown structures, the driving force behind the high percentage of occupancy may very well be Anna Martch, economic development and communications specialist for the Village of Hinsdale. “Since joining the village in mid-2016, Anna has worked tirelessly to bring in new business and create the vibrant community we see today,” adds Berger. “She is an incredible asset to the village.” The results are beyond impressive. Our historic downtown shopping area features the ambiance of tree-lined streets, upscale boutiques and service businesses, a bustling cafe and dining scene, and vibrant nightlife—all within walking distance and easy access to the train station. Beyond downtown shopping and business, Hinsdale boasts two additional retail districts: Grant Square and Gateway Square. We’ve rounded up some photos and highlights here as motivation to get out to shop, indulge in spa and other services, try a new exercise studio, or grab a bite and a beverage—all right here in our town.

Upscale Shopping
Residents can have the best of both worlds in Hinsdale, with the City of Chicago easily accessible via a quick train ride on the Burlington Northern, from the Metra station in historic downtown Hinsdale as well as the West Hinsdale Station and the Highlands.
Shopping local doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or the designers and brands we love. Upscale boutiques abound, with the newly opened MARCUS atelier just one example of how historic downtown retailers are investing in Hinsdale as a place to open new shops and offer the latest high-fashioned trends right in town. “The Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Village of Hinsdale, works hard to give our residents and visitor a destination for unique shopping and an exquisite dining experience,” says Berger. From jewelry stores and boho boutiques to high-end clothiers, cool craft shops, and local stores with hard-to-find gifts, shopping downtown Hinsdale never disappoints.

Café & Dining SceneIn the warmer months, residents can’t get enough of al fresco dining along tree-lined sidewalks and tucked within cobblestone alleys, creating the ambiance of our own European village. And, year round, there is a wide selection of dining options, from casual to hip and trendy to the most sophisticated. Whether it’s pizza and ice cream, sushi and salads, or the latest cuisine trends, you’ll satisfy any palate in downtown Hinsdale. “Living in Hinsdale means being part of a caring community and a thriving business climate that I can truly say contains some of the best dining in the Western Suburbs,” says Berger. “I am excited to tell friends and family about some of the exciting things opening in town like MARCUS and great food at Harry & Eddie’s.”

HistoricPedigreeOne of the things that makes downtown Hinsdale so attractive to upscale retailers and businesses is the abundance of historic buildings—ripe for repurposing and renovation. In addition to boasting 17 Hinsdale Historic Landmarks with seven buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, downtown Hinsdale itself is also a National Register Historic Landmark. The origins of what became the Village of Hinsdale in 1873 began in 1851 with a community known as Fullersburg. A man named Ben Fuller petitioned the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad to build a line through the community, a bold move which opened the region to growth in the years after the great Chicago fire led to an exodus from the city. While an eclectic blend of styles define the adjacent residential areas—including the 275-acre Robbins Park Historic District—downtown architecture is primarily from the 19th century with such prominent Hinsdale architects as R. Harold Zook and William Gibson Barfield represented.

BurlingtonParkConsidered by many to be the heart of the community in downtown Hinsdale, Burlington Park offers more than a bucolic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday. It serves as home to many of the community events that help define our village, including the weekly Farmers Market during the summer months and the annual Fine Arts Festival in June. Huge mature trees offer shade, walking paths invite a stroll, and park benches invite families and friends to relax and enjoy the breeze. “Each year, Hinsdale residents and visitors look forward to our community events, like the annual Sidewalk Sale, the Uniquely Thursdays concert series and the annual Christmas Walk,” says Berger. By adding new elements to each event—like the full-size holiday carousel to the Christmas walk and food trucks to the Uniquely Thursdays concert series—event participation keeps growing.

Hinsdale Historical Society15 S. Clay StreetHinsdale630-789-2600hinsdalehistory.org
Incorporated in 1975, the Hinsdale Historical Society bridges the past, present, and future by engaging the community with its architecture and history. Serving as the repository for Hinsdale’s rich history, the society collects and preserves archival material and artifacts for research and exhibition. As a nonprofit supported entirely by memberships, donations, and fundraising, the society maintains three historic properties, offers a variety of educational programs, and collaborates with the community to instill pride in Hinsdale’s heritage.
The Hinsdale History Museum, constructed in 1874, depicts the life of a middle-class family during the village’s early years prior to 1900. Donated by School District 181, the house was relocated to Eleanor’s Park in 1981. Through private fundraising and volunteer efforts, a full restoration resulted in seven period rooms
filled with authentic antiques and features small exhibits, a program space, and gift shop. The Hinsdale Garden Study Club lovingly tends the beautiful Victorian garden. Visitors can tour on Fridays and Saturdays, Noon to 4 pm, with group tours available by appointment. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Immanuel Hall (302 S. Grant Street), a 1900 church saved from demolition in 1999, is home to the Society’s local history archives and the Roger and Ruth Anderson Architecture Center. It’s open for research on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 am to 2 pm. The Hall is also available for use by the public for community meetings, nonprofit fundraisers, public seminars, and musical recitals. In 2005, the Society saved the Cotswold-style cottage designed for his family by Hinsdale architect R. Harold Zook. The home and studio were moved to Katherine Legge Memorial Park next to the Zook-designed lodge. Although still in the rehabilitation process, the building’s unique architectural style can still be enjoyed within the historic park setting. For those wanting to explore Hinsdale’s neighborhoods, the Society, in partnership with Hinsdale’s Historic Preservation Commission, recently launched a tours app: HistoricalTourist: Hinsdale. Like having a private tour guide in the palm of your hand, the tours featured highlight and detail the local architecture and stories of Hinsdale’s past. It’s free to download for both Apple and Android devices. The annual Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk, organized by the Society’s dedicated women’s board, has become a local not-to-be-missed experience. Held the Friday before Mother’s Day, hundreds of people tour exclusively selected homes to view uniquely designed kitchens, sample fabulous vendors, and enjoy Hinsdale’s hometown charm.

GRAUE MILL
Located off York Road, one half mile north of Ogden Avenue, is the only operating water-wheel gristmill in the greater Chicago area. Fred Graue built the mill in 1852 to serve the surrounding countryside of Brush Hill (Hinsdale), and it served the community until the turn-of-the-century when modern milling methods rendered the old mill obsolete. Graue Mill and Museum is a nonprofit volunteer organization supported entirely by admissions, memberships, and donations. The buildings and grounds are owned and maintained by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. Today, thousands of visitors annually view the basic milling process, explained by a miller in a white apron, and purchase fresh stone-ground cornmeal in old-fashioned cloth bags. After browsing the museum store on the ground floor, they may also stroll the museum’s upper stories, which contain an old-fashioned barn, nostalgic child’s room, Victorian drawing room, early American kitchen and sitting room, and an old country store complete with genuine rock candy and high-button shows. In the basement, said to have been an Underground Railway station, visitors can view the large and fascinating wooden gearwheels. Spinning and weaving demonstrations are held daily, and artisans and events are regularly held on weekends when the mill is open.

FREDERICK GRAUE HOUSE
The Frederick Graue House, built in 1859, stands next to Graue Mill. Restored and opened to the public in 2002, the house is a fine example of Italianate architecture. The interior of the house has been converted into a multi-use facility and is used for special programs and exhibits by Graue Mill. The house is also available for rental for weddings, showers, birthday and anniversary parties, and meetings. Occupancy of the house is limited to seventy people, but the surrounding grounds are also available for rental. For more information regarding rental of the Frederick Graue House, please call Graue Mill at 630-920-9720. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County owns and maintains the Frederick Graue House, Graue Mill, and the surrounding grounds.

HCS Family Services19 E. Chicago Avenue Hinsdale630-323-2500hcsfamilyservices.org
Since 1937, HCS Family Services has been a beacon of compassion and support for people living on the margins in the near Western Suburbs of Chicago. At the end of the Great Depression, Hinsdale community leaders founded HCS Family Services to provide food and utility assistance to the local community. Today, HCS continue to live by our founders’ vision of helping our neighbors in need. Hunger is an acute, yet often hidden, issue in our region. DuPage County has the second largest hungry population in the State of Illinois. One in six children in Northern Illinois face hunger. Sadly, many local families do not have access to the nutritious food options that are essential to good health. HCS operates two food pantries that provide free groceries in a “client choice” model to residents of 24 neighboring communities.

Last year, HCS Family Services distributed over 600,000 pounds of food with a retail value of $1.2 million. By providing food at no cost, clients have extra disposable income to spend on critical expenses—medical, rent, transportation, child care, etc. HCS provides healthy food options (including fresh produce, milk, and eggs) as well as many essential household items (diapers, paper products, and toiletries) to our guests. HCS’s community pantry is located in Hinsdale’s Memorial. Our second pantry, opened at the Anne M. Jeans Elementary School in Willowbrook in 2016, serves the families of Willowbrook Corners. About 500 neighbors are served by HCS Family Services each week. In total, HCS makes more than 22,000 food distributions to families, children, and seniors annually. HCS serves more than 1,000 local families representing approximately 4,000 individuals each year. HCS purchases about 20 percent of its food through the efficient Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) system. Every $1 donation buys the equivalent of $8 in a local grocery store. Over 70 percent of distributed food is rescued from local grocery stores (such as Costco, Jewel, Whole Foods, Target, Wal-Mart, Brookhaven, and Mariano’s). HCS rescues over 400,000 pounds of food that would otherwise go to waste annually. The remaining 10 percent of our food supplies come from community donations. HCS could not operate without its extended network of community partners. Approximately 400 community volunteers work at HCS each year as shopping assistants, delivery truck drivers, stockers, and greeters. HCS fills about 85 volunteer opportunities each week. HCS Family Services food pantries are a gateway to other social services. HCS Family Services is an authorized distribution site for the Salvation Army Emergency Assistance Program. We also refer clients to a range of other services for housing, rent and utility, mental health, and furnishing assistance. HCS also organizes holiday assistance programs for our clients. We distribute Thanksgiving meals to our guests. Last year, we organized the distribution of December holiday gifts to 900 children and seniors with the support of many community partners.
For more information about joining the HCS Family Services Community of Givers—by volunteering, donating food and supplies, or providing financial support—please contact us.
The Robert Crown Center for Health Education
Hinsdale630-325-1900robertcrown.org
As a leader and innovator in prevention education, the Robert Crown Center (RCC) has been teaching science-based health programs in elementary and middle schools for more than 40 years. Educators teach a full spectrum of programs that are scientifically-accurate and age-appropriate in three topic areas:
» Sex Education – programs include puberty education, life begins, and teen sexual health » Drug Education – programs provide information on substance use and the effects on the brain and body » Social-Emotional Health – infused in all programs and reinforce healthy social interactions and relationships
Every year, RCC has the opportunity to teach students in nine Chicago-area counties, with our professional educators traveling more than 15,000 miles annually to deliver programs. We continually modify or develop our programs in response to emerging health issues. In recent years, programs have been developed to target the special needs community, the non-English speaking population, and to address drug use trends. Since it’s inception, RCC is proud to
have educated over 6 million students in the Chicagoland area. As a nonprofit organization, all proceeds support program development and assist in delivering health education to students in low-resourced areas.
Hinsdale Humane Society21 N. Salt Creek LaneHinsdale630-323-5630hinsdalehumanesociety.org
For 65 years, Hinsdale Humane Society (HHS) has been finding forever families for homeless dogs and cats while also offering enrichment programs like Pet Therapy, Obedience, and Humane Education for the community. What started as six local women wanting to make a difference in 1953 has grown into the well-respected shelter it is today with more than 300 volunteers and nearly 1,000 adoptions annually. That adoption number is expected to double with the increased space of HHS’ new Pet Rescue & Resource Center at 21 Salt Creek Lane. The new building will have three times the current space and will have enhanced community programming, a veterinary clinic, a Puppy Bowl, opportunities for the public to host events there, and more! But it all comes back to the animals that take shelter at HHS. While they are up for adoption, they are well fed, exercised, and cared for until they’re matched with that perfect family. Ten police departments from throughout the Western Suburbs bring lost animals to HHS and its doors are always open for pets that can no longer stay with their family due to financial constraints, allergies, or other reasons. After health screenings and temperament testing, pets are ready for adoption. Additional dogs and cats from other animal welfare agencies are also often relocated to HHS for adoption. HHS also offers a wide variety of outreach programs. Whether it’s help to address pet behavioral problems or reuniting lost pets with their owners, HHS is there to help.
For more information about HHS or how to get involved, call us or visit our website.

Receiving an “A” in the Spring 2018 edition of the study, the medical center also was awarded The Leapfrog Group’s “Straight A” designation, which recognizes hospitals that have received an “A” grade for the last three years. AMITA Health Hinsdale is also a “Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Five-Star Quality Rated” facility. No other facility in our neighboring communities carries this distinction. In the medical center’s Level II Trauma Center, more than 27,000 patients are treated each year. The center also has an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) certification. Patients can schedule their ED visit online at waitathome.org. AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale has the necessary qualifications to care for women who have the potential or likelihood for complicated or high-risk deliveries and newborns that might require specialized services in its Level III Perinatal Center. At the AMITA Health Cancer Institute Hinsdale, located at One Salt Creek Lane in Hinsdale, patients receive cancer care that is compassionate, personalized, and focused on outcomes. Experts in pathology, hematology/oncology, radiation therapy, oncological surgery, general surgery, genetics, and others work together and use state-of-the art diagnostic and treatment technologies and offer patients the latest breakthroughs and clinical trials. The hospital’s state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi surgical system enables trained surgeons to perform delicate operations through a few tiny incisions, offering a minimally invasive option for surgical procedures. The leading edge MAKOplasty total hip replacement and MAKOplasty total and partial knee procedures are also offered. The AMITA Health Behavioral Medicine Institute is the largest in Illinois and 7th largest in the nation. The Institute treats the full spectrum of disorders and addictions, with additional specialty programs for OCD, geriatric depression and postpartum depression with infant-in-residence.

The Community House415 W. 8th StreetHinsdale630-323-7500communityhouse.org
Since its beginning in 1941, The Community House has been at the heart of the community. As it has branched out, its sense of service and of community has grown, but our heart remains—to
champion a vibrant and caring community. The organization offers many innovative and unique educational, athletic, and arts programs—providing countless opportunities for volunteering and investment. The facility is open for meetings, parties, and weddings. But at the end of the day, The Community House leaders desire is to see a deeply connected community transforming lives. The organization stands for the power of neighbors joining with neighbors. We help people find their place to engage. We inspire the art of being human. Whether through the Ly Hotchkin Arts Program, Youth Recreation Programming, Active Adults, Facility Rentals or the social services we provide through counseling, Charlie’s Gift Center for Autism and Willowbrook Corner, our mission remains simple—to build community through inspired learning, social impact, and life-enriching experiences. We are the community crossroads where people choose to unite. It is here that safety and support lead to exploration and learning. It is here that wholeness and happiness happen.
For more information on how you can be part of The Community House—by participating in programs, volunteering, or investing in our community—call us or visit our website.
The Wellness House131 N. County Line RoadHinsdale630-323-5150wellnesshouse.org
Wellness House envisions communities where all people affected by cancer thrive. Offered at no cost, and as a complement to medical treatment, our programs educate, support, and empower participants so they will improve their physical and emotional well being. Programs are professionally designed and facilitated to complement traditional medical treatment in an effort to help people live their fullest through and beyond a cancer diagnosis. Recognizing that cancer affects their entire family, participants can choose from programs such as nutrition classes, stress reduction, exercise classes, individual counseling, support group, and bereavement. There are also a variety of programs, which focus on specific cancers and issues that patients and family members (including young and adult children) may experience. Even when cancer patients have an established support network and are content with their medical treatment, Wellness House programs can lead to:
» A greater understanding of cancer, its treatment and side effects, and choices they may have » A reduced sense of isolation, fear, anxiety, and stress » A greater sense of control » Improved communication within the support network and family » An extended support network
