INTRODUCTION
Kongsberg’s HiPAP® systems are designed to provide accurate positions of subsea objects such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), towed bodies or fixed seabed transponders. To achieve the accuracy, the HiPAP® system uses unique signal processing techniques. This technique enables narrow transmitter and receiver beams to be generated in all directions within the lower half of the transducer using electronic beam control. Kongsberg’s HiPAP® systems are the only acoustic
positioning systems on the market that utilises beam forming processing techniques. The HiPAP® 502/452/352/102 systems are the third generation HiPAP® systems. These models have new transceiver cabinet and electronics which allow better filtering of raw signals and improved signal processing algorithms providing increased maximum range and improved angular accuracy.
Ray bending compensation
The transponder position, calculated from the measured angles and/or range, is influenced by the ray-bending effect. The ray-bending effect occurs due to different sound velocity layers in the water column. The HiPAP systems can correct for these errors, by loading in the values measured from a profiling probe. The sound velocity values may also be entered manually. The operator will also see the ray-trace deflection on
the APOS display. Kongsberg’s HiPAP systems are the only acoustic positioning systems to implement real time ray bending compensation.
HiPAP’s Unique Transducers The HiPAP series of transducers has many more elements than any of its competitors. Our statement is that there is a clear connection between system performance and the number of elements. Acoustic redundancy, mathematical redundancy, beam forming capability and improvement of the Signal to Noise level are all benefits of the additional transducers.
HiPAP® 502 The HiPAP® 502 has a full spherical transducer body including 241 transducer elements. This model is the preferred system where the best possible performance is required. The HiPAP501 can also track targets
above the sphere sector. The use of very narrow beams provides:
High accuracy Long range capabilities Good noise reduction capabilities Good multipath suppression

The HiPAP 502
HiPAP 502 is the third generation of the grand success of underwater positioning systems also known
to the market as the TOP-OF-THE-RANGE system of more than 1900 HiPAP systems delivered per
spring 2015. With its impressive transducer array of more than 200 computer controlled elements
assembled in a sphere, no other system beats its performance. Accuracy is always dependent on the beam
width and the active area of a transducer giving HiPAP 502 the best accuracy in the market.
The HiPAP 502’s spherical transducer allows the system to form narrow “listening” beams of 10 degree
for reception of signals from the transponder. This beam can be pointed in any direction below the vessel
(also horizontally and even upwards to the surface), as the transducer has the shape of a sphere. See
figure below.

S/N) whilst Dual Accuracy Mode with two transducers will give better than 0.042 degree
Full omni directionality (200 degree) with full sensitivity in all directions
Penetrates 500 mm gate valve
Extremely reliable through already well proven hardware
The system has no mechanical transducer steering
Full HiPAP functionality’s and operation advantages
Super narrow pointing receiver beams, suppressing noise and reflections from other directions
Corrections of errors caused by ray-bending, and display of ray-trace
Double position measurement, redundancy, quality control
Optional full LBL functionality Software
The new optional Cymbal acoustic protocol introduces a number of improvements

communication. The data communication speed is variable
and can be adapted to the acoustic communication
conditions; noise and multi-path. DSSS is a wide band
signal.
Due to the higher energy in its acoustic pulses the Cymbal
protocol provides:

APOS SURVEY
Kongsberg Maritime has developed an APOS Survey operator station for HiPAP and cPAP, the ROV
LBL Transceiver. Designed for both permanent and temporary installations aboard vessels fitted with
HiPAP positioning systems, APOS Survey enables the surveyor to operate independently of the bridge.
The new technology has been developed to provide a cost effective solution for subsea survey and
construction operations, by making it possible for the surveyor to utilise a vessel’s HiPAP system.
Acoustic interrogations are interleaved or even run simultaneously with the DP updates, without making
changes to the vessels APOS software or installation parameters.
The APOS Survey computer is factory preloaded with Windows 7 and runs APOS Survey function
software. Connection to the vessels HiPAP OS is safely made via an opto isolated serial interface, to an
existing serial comm port.
In order to communicate between the two systems, a small program called ASI (APOS Survey Interface)
has to be installed on both of the operator stations. The program can be loaded by the vessel or survey
crew and auto-installs off a KM supplied USB.
The ASI program allows the transfer of the vessel configuration to APOS Survey and selection of which
transceiver(s) are available for survey. It also provides the communication link from the APOS survey
to use the HiPAP transceiver. After transfer, the APOS Survey may be configured with independent
lever arms, alignment offsets and sensors, including, gyro MRU and GNSS.
DP operations are protected from changes as any configuration changes on the independent APOS
survey OS will not be copied back to the vessel system.
The APOS Survey may be operated as any other APOS. The online help function will give more
information. Multiple APOS Survey computers may be networked.
The APOS Survey OS includes the following software options:
- Long Baseline, ROV, vessel and transponder/structure positioning
- Long Baseline Array Calibration
- Box-in calibration
- Interface for cPAP LBL ROV Transceiver
- Interface for ROV pressure and velocity sensors
