    ABOUT HIPPIE

    The HIPPIE (or HIPPY)subculture was originally ayouth movement, chiefly

    promoted by the youth between the age of fifteen years and twenty-fie years, thatarose in the !nited "tates, during the mid-#$%&s and spread to other countries around

    the world'

    The word hippie came from hipster, and was initially used to describe eatni*s who

    had moed into +ew Yor* and found their Technicolor heart in the Haight-shbury

    district of "an rancisco. children of the road who belieed they should ma*e loe, not

    war who had moed into +ew Yor*'

    The origins of the termshipand hepare uncertain, though by the #$/&s both had

    become part of frican merican 0ie slang and meant 1sophisticated. currently

    The hippie moement has found historical precedents as far bac* as the2a3da*ist 2oement

    in Persia, whose leader the Persian reformer 2a3da*, adocated communal liing, the sharingof resources, egetarianism and free loe'

    The early hippies inherited a tradition of cultural dissent from ohemians and eatni*s of

    the eat 4eneration'

    Hippies created their own communities, listened topsychedelic music, embraced the se5ual

    reolution, and some used drugs such as cannabis, 6"7, and psilocybin mushrooms to

    e5plore altered states of consciousness' The ideology behind the moement was based on peace, loe and personal freedom and, as a

    conse8uence, deeloped a huge following' Inariably, the hippies endeaored to e5press their

    freedom in the way they dressed, which indirectly reflected their thoughts, attitude, ideas and

    way of life'

    In #$%?, !" feminist etty riedan published The Feminine Mystique, giing momentum

    to the womens moement and influencing what many called "econd-wae feminism' They

    rebelled against the 1support1 role they had been consigned to within the then-male-led

    +ew 6eft, as well as against manifestations and statements of se5ism within some radical

    groups

    Envi!onment&lism

    The #$%&s counterculture embraced a bac*-to-the-land ethic, and communes of the era

    often relocated to the country from cities' ;erpopulation, nuclear energy , pollution ,

    litter etc' were some of the concerns'

    '&y li(e!&tion =hen people in the gay community fought bac* against a goernment-sponsored system

    that persecuted se5ual minorities, and became the defining eent that mar*ed the start of

    the 4ay rights moement in the !nited "tates and around the world'

    2any hippies re0ected mainstream organi3ed religion in faor of a more personal spiritual

    e5perience, often drawing on indigenous and fol* beliefs' If they adhered to mainstream

    faiths, hippies were li*ely to embrace uddhism, !nitarian !niersalism, Hinduism and

    the restorationist 9hristianity of the Besus 2oement'

    ;n "eptember #$, #$%%, 6eary founded the 6eague for "piritual 7iscoery, a religion

    declaring 6"7 as its holy sacrament, in part as an unsuccessful attempt to maintain legal status

    for the use of 6"7 and other psychedelics for the religions adherents based on a 1freedom ofreligion1 argument

    philosophy, art, music and styles of dress'

    Hippies followed the desire for the transformation of society

    not through political reolution, or through reformist action

    pushed forward by the state, but through the creation of a

    counter-society of a socialist character in the midst of the

    current system, which will be made up of ideal communities

    of a more or less libertarian social form'

    ideals of loe and human fellowship seemed to hae gained real-world e5pression'

    1=oodstoc* =estD, its official name was The ltamont ree 9oncert' bout ?&&,&&& people

    gathered to hear The :olling "tones. 9rosby, "tills, +ash and Young. Befferson irplaneand

    other bands' The Hells ngels proided security that proed far less beneficent than the

    security proided at the =oodstoc* eent #F-year-old 2eredith Hunter was stabbed and

    *illed while drawing a gun in front of the stage during The :olling "tones performance, andfour accidental deaths occurred' There were also four births at the concert'

    2uch of hippie style had been integrated into 2ainstreammerican society by the early#$A&s' 6arge roc* concerts that originated with the #$%A 2onterey Pop estialand the

    #$%F Isle of =ight estialbecame the norm' 2ustaches, beards and longer hair became

    commonplace and colorful, multi-ethnic clothing dominated the fashion world'

    2any of the bands performing at hippie festials, and their deriaties, are called0am bands,

    since they play songs that contain long instrumentals similar to the original hippie bands of the

    #$%&s' Psychedelic trance or 1psytrance,1 a type of techno music influenced by

    #$%&s psychedelic roc* and hippie culture is also popular among neo-hippies worldwide'

    Psytrance hippies usually attend separate festials where only electronic music is played'

    The original hippie style was a messy, carefree loo* through ruffled hair and bright, rumpled

    clothes, heaily accessori3ed with ohemian headbands, scares and beads to name a few'

    oth men and women wore frayed bell-bottomed 0eans, tie-dyed shirts, wor* shirts, and

    headbands' =earing sandals was also part of the hippie loo* for both'

    ringed buc*-s*in ests, flowing caftans, the 1lounging1 or 1hostess1 pa0amas were worn'

    These consisted of a tunic top oer floor-length culottes, and were usually made of polyester

    or chiffon'

    all the dresses were embellished with ribbons, and sometimes een real flowers' The idea was

    to loo* in tune with nature, yet bedraggled'

    Pants had been iewed by western society as masculine' The

    #$%&s were an age for new fashion innoation for women which

    came with the rise of women@s pants' y the #$%&s, it became

    acceptable for women to wear pants as well

    Hipsters, bellbottoms, and ohemian patches were popular and

    were worn with wide belts, *nitted beanies and hemp nec*laces'

    2en customarily grew facial hair and had moustaches or

    beards, but these were neer trimmed' The un*empt hair

    beaded hemp nec*laces' s music was an integral part of hippie culture, any 0ewellery that

    made percussion sounds was immensely popular'

    2ost hippies@ wore peace motifs on their clothing or around their nec* in the form of

    nec*laces'

    Hippie women wore nec*laces with bells and een went barefoot, wearing an*lets' This was

    especially considered trendy'

    "implicity was the theme of the hippie moement, and natural beauty was the inspiration, so,

    most of the hippie 0ewelry was handmade, and the designs influenced by nature'
