Thanks to: A. Pardons, C. Magnier, O. Choisnet, S. Evrard, D. D Paoli for answering my numerous requests for drawings and details!

T9 dump (modeled by A. Christov)

Ventilation

test stand + collimator

Stair-case and elevator holes

• The dimensions of the tunnels and the “tunnel findings” are in almost perfect agreement with the drawings

• The electromechanical installation going down the PA7 shaft (Cables, etc…) is taken into account, in order to have a more accurate dose estimation at BA7.

Magnets & beam elements

Several Scenarios• Prompt studies (A copper target, 1m length, placed

at focal point 1 (representing a worst-case scenario)

11/25/10

• Activation studies (operational scenario with the table and the collimator)

• Background studies (when the activated objects are removed, the remnant dose at the tunnel)

BA7: Prompt Dose• The prompt radiation is important for the

characterization of the area (Supervised Radiation Area – Low Occupancy Area)

11/25/10

Dose rate < 15 μSv/h

< 1μSv/h out of the internal wall

70-200 μSv/h

Worst case scenario: protons, over 100 extractions of 20 s each

Activation Studies• The beam hitting 1mm on the collimator carbon

jaw (operational scenario)

11/25/10

• The activation of the collimator, and the table, and the dump was calculated after seven cooling times• 1 hour, • 12 hours• 1 day, • 2 days, • 1 week, • 1 month, • 2 months

Background dose• When the activated object is being removed

(after one experiment), what is the remnant dose at the tunnel that the workers of preparation of the next experiment will be subject to ?

11/25/10

• Two scenarios of background radiation studies:

- A copper target, 15 cm long placed at f.p 3- The normal stand – collimator system at f.p 3

Page 9: HiRadMat radiation environment !! First Look !!

After 1 hour, with the table & the collimator removed

• Most of the remnant radiation comes from the dump

Cabling studies• Electrical engineers want to choose the type

of the cables and optical fibers that they have to install on the tunnels.

• Estimation of the dose (Gray) that the cables will be subjected to, for a 10y approximate period ( protons)
