lent economic times, the support and generosity of the friends of HJDOI is more critical than

ever.

Internally, the Institute has taken steps to prepare for what promises to be a challenging future.

As the business of healthcare becomes more competitive and changes in the reimbursement

system lower patient census, we will be going outside the Institute's walls to market our serv-

ices and products to the community and to other healthcare providers. We are also putting into

place innovative programs that will greatly increase the Institute's research capabilities.

In the last year, the Foundation received royalties from two product sources. Monoclonal

antibodies, developed by the Department of Rheumatic Diseases, are being marketed in con-

junction with Becton Dickenson. The HJD Lumbar Support Belt is now being nationally dis-

tributed by the Richards Medical Company.

Several other innovative products and techniques were developed at HJDOI over the past year.

They include:

• An implant to correct the condition of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in which the head

of the femur slips in children.

• & Development Foundation's first year has been a sterling one. We put out

• In the final stages of product development is a biodegradable bonT ipipjant which;`because it is absorbed into the body, eliminates the need for additional removal surgery,

Musculoskeletal disorders are the single greatest cause of disability i ed [States,costing business, industry and the consumer over $25 billion annually in ngs andservices. The OIOC, established largely with funds provided by the Foundati ,\ helps theworker return to the workplace more quickly, armed with the training necessary blarevqnt

1further injury.

OIOC contains programs not only for treatment—physical and occupational \herapy )Orthopaedic/Arthritis Pain Center and specialty services—but programs for pre ention.Workplace/worktask modification and the Back School are designed to revamp potentiallyinjurious work environments and retrain employees in ways of working that are less likely tocause injury or disability.

Within the past year, several new and exciting programs sponsobegun operation within the Institute. They include:

Occupational and Industrial Orthopaedic Center

In the last year, 010C began working with Trans World Airlines and the Long Island RailRoad to provide employee education. With the U.S. Postal Service, 010C helped design thefirst new mailbag since it was invented by Benjamin Franklin.

HJDOI plans to amplify this partnership with labor, business and industry through the pro-grams of 010C, both on a consultant basis and through the marketing of products and services.

Recognizing HJDOI's leadership in the area of work-related injuries, the 010C was asked bytwo United Nations' agencies, World Health Organization and the International LabourOrganization, to cosponsor the first "International Conference on Injuries in the Workplace,"held in New York. Over 180 specialists from 33 countries gathered to discuss prevention andtreatment of on-the-job injuries. HJDOI and the World Rehabilitation Fund will sponsor thesecond annual conference, to be held in the spring of 1986 in Copenhagen, Denmark,cosponsored again by the WHO and the International Labour Organization.

Bioengineering

The Bioengineering Department consists of a variety of programs that blend biomechanicswith orthopaedic evaluation and treatment. This year, the innovative Gait Analysis Lab went

SNAP is research intensive. Studies are now going on to determine the genetic and infective

causes of seronegative arthritis as well as identifying factors that are predictive of the develop-

ment of the disease.

One SNAP study of great importance is the work being done on psoriatic arthritis to answer the

question—Is it a Jewish genetic disease? So far, data indicate that one form of the disease

afflicts Ashkenazi Jews, in particular, who constitute 40% of its victims.

Orthopaedic Center for the Arts

Art holds an esteemed place at HJDOI, the site of one of the largest, and certainly one of themost unusual "art museums" in the world. This commitment to art has been further expandedwith the establishment of the Orthopaedic Center for the Arts, designed to meet the unique

orthopaedic needs of dancers, musicians and painters who make such enormous demands ontheir bodies that they are often plagued with chronic musculoskeletal problems.

Some of the treatment programs are prescriptive exercise therapy and modification of body

usage to help prevent further injury.

Our administrative and medical staff are always on the lookout for programs that will enhance

patient care while furthering the advance of medical knowledge. Plans for the following cen-

ters are in the final stages of realization.

Geriatric Orthopaedic Center

Our population is aging rapidly. By the year 2000, 15% of us w. I be 65. The iiopaedieicproblems of the elderly are legion. Each year, two percent of fe , ales and 6% of males over 65suffer fractured hips from falls, the leading cause of accidental death a er putomobi le colli-sions. Falls cause the elderly a loss of productivity and purpose that has a stage ing emotionaland financial toll.

Recognizing that we cannot afford to lose our elderly citizens as an active national resource,,HJDOI is in the process of establishing a Geriatric Orthopaedic Center that will meet the spe-cial orthopaedic needs of our senior citizens.

The Stroke Program

In this country alone, over two million people suffer strokes each year. For e-vittims ofstroke the spector of the nursing home, the wheelchair and the loss of adult inde dene andidentity is all too often a grim reality. HJDOI is currently planning a post stroke r ttiatwill utilize the special skills of its orthopaedic surgeons to correct residual disa ilities thatstroke victims often suffer, so that they can return more quickly to vital, productive lives.

Affiliation with FEGS

Currently in the final stages of planning is a joint venture between HJDOI and the FederationEmployment and Guidance Service (FEGS), agencies that share an affiliation with the Federa-tion of Jewish Philanthropies. Injured and disabled workers referred by FEGS will be evalu-ated and treated at HJDOI's Occupational and Industrial Orthopaedic Center.

Also under study is a joint venture project between HJDOI and FEGS that calls for OIOC toprovide employee medical examinations from insurance company referrals provided byFEGS.

Once in place, these programs will not only generate revenues for the Institute but will provideHJDOI with an increased patient base.

As can be seen by the full range of research studies and programs that the Foundation supports,HJDOI is positioning itself to take an aggressive stance in response to these difficult times —to turn limitations into opportunities and to transform problems into challenges.

Sustained by the generous support of the friends of the HJD Research & DevelopmentFoundation, we will be able not only to continue, but to enhance, our leadership role as guard-ian of the health of mankind.
