T he new Irizar i8 coaches are only on Sca- nia chassis for the Italian market, namely the K450EB chassis for the 12.4-metre two-a- xle version and the K490EB for the three-axle model in a length of 13.2 and 14 m. The longer version took to the streets to make a shot at the motorway route of BusToCoach, as it did last year the 14-metre irizar i6 (refer to BusToCoach Magazine of April 2015). It is necessary to make a comparison with the results of the i6 version, as the ballasted vehicle weight and powertrain are the same. T he vehicle fits 59 Irizar i8 passenger seats and is of-

fered in two standard ver-sions: with horizontal and vertical trim application styles seats. They have a leather design (with fold-down armrests), can be ex-tended and complete with the seatback table. All the optio-nal extras can be added to the rear handles, footrests and two/three point comfort belts fitted as standard. The LED lights are employed for illuminating the floor located approximately 1.7 metres of the ground and raised three steps higher compared to the driver’s cockpit. The closed luggage racks with doors (optional) are elegant, with an external handrail that incor-porates two-intensity LED white lighting. On top of the luggage rack there is a slit for air condi-

tioning distribution that is deli-vered through the closable vents in the service set of the personal equipment (spaced out with the speakers), which also includes LED lights with touch-screen power buttons.Heating is provided by floor con-vectors powered by the Spheros Thermo 300 housed behind the compartment door in the rear

part of the vehicle rightwards.Three are the flat screen moni-tors. A 21” monitor is fitted into the front body (with a digital clo-ck) above the driver’s seat while the other two of 18,5” are located on the right luggage rack, above the toilet, and on the left partia-lized luggage rack. The driver makes use of a styli-sh and ergonomic air suspension

heated Isri seat and the central multifunction display embedded in the Scania dashboard also selectable via the steering wheel. In the central part there is a di-splay with touch-screen controls for navigation system, rear view camera, air-conditioning, GPS, mobile and audio/video systems. There are electric split sunshade, side curtain and folding rear-

Scania engine delivering 490 horsepower (360 kW) mated to the Scania Opticruise 12-speed automated transmission. The reduction ratio on the bridge of 1: 3.15 is also identical and the performance on the road could not offer big surprises. The Irizar i8 covered 342 kilometres from Milan to Genoa and back, consuming an average of 1 litre of diesel per 4.18 km (including the equiva-lent AdBlue amount) and traveling with the average speed of 80.9 km/hour. The i6 had performed slightly better, but it is about decimal values: 4.2 km/litre and 82 km/h.Therefore the test confirms the low consum-ption of the Scania engine, which places our i8 before the Mercedes Tourismo L, thanks to a performance index of 8.45 (refer to the table at the end of the article). These figures are still far from the index of 9.07 received by the Setra S 516 HDH, though tested with a ballast of 2.3 tons less.

The i8 as well as the 14-metre i6 features the 13-litre Sca-

nia Euro VI engine in its more powerful version, namely, the DC13 125 delivers 490 horse-power (360 kW) and 2,550 Nm of torque. It is characterized by direct injection with four valves per cylinder, common-rail with XPI of 2,400 bars and Scania VGT variable geometry turbine. The reduction of polluting emis-sions is achieved through a com-bination of exhaust gas recircu-lation (EGR), diesel particulate filter (DPF) and catalyst (SCR) with AdBlue injection. The gear-box is the automated 12-speed Scania Opticruise with select-able driving modes economy, standard and power to maximise engine performance. The braking system (EBS) and the air suspension (ELC), both electronically controlled, di-stribute weight on three Scania

axles: AMI 700 front indepen-dent wheel, rear ADA 130D and steering ARA860. For the dri-ving safety one can rely on ESP, ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and LDWS (Lane assistant). The technical parts are easily ac-

cessible through the side hatches. Perhaps it would be better to ar-range the batteries in the free compartment above the AdBlue tank (in the rear part rightwards) leaving free space above the left wheel arch. •

The 14.07m i8 shows an excellent road beha-vior which increases its stability by lengthe-ning the wheelbase of about 40 centimetres (rear overhang is reduced to the same extent) compared to the 14.37 m i6.As we have already written in BusToCoach Magazine last month, a number of touring Irizar i8, introduced to the market by the end of the last year, represents the top of the Spa-nish manufacturer’s range and will gradu-ally take the place of the PB series. Fulfilling its role, the tested (test-dri-ven) 14.07m i8 was then presented with rich optional fitting: equipped saddlery with leather uphol-stery, closed baggage racks, tinted windows, metallic paint and in-creased diesel tank. It is a ‘luxury’ coach for a real price of 400 thousand EUR, about 25 thousand euro more is required for the standard equipment that still does not omit the toilet, the coffee machine, the alloy wheels, the LED daytime running lights, the parking sensors, the rear camera and the electrically foldable rear-view mirrors. In short, the i8 is an excellent model even without overdoing it. •
