Animals in Latin American Culture HISP1317C/LACA1371C CRN26569 MWF 2PM – 2:50PM CLAUDIA BECERRA MÉNDEZ This course traces the varied ways in which animals appear (or fail to appear) in 20th- and 21st century Latin American literature and film. What narratives, poetics, and ethics arise when animals and humans are at play? What social issues (class, race, and gender) are raised when the human- animal divide is breached? Can animals appear in texts and films as something other than tropes of the human? How do we look at an animal, and how can we see with them? These are some of the questions that will inform our discussions of writers and artists such as Julio Cortázar, Pablo Neruda, César Vallejo, Ángela María Dávila, Olga Orozco, Lucrecia Martel. Pre-requisites: HISP 0730, 0740, 0760, minimum score of 5 in 'AP Spanish Literature' or minimum score of WAIVE in 'Graduate Student PreReq'. Julia Wernicke, Estudio del tigre (c. 1900)
