What? It’s AGM time already? They say that as you get older, time flies faster, even if your lap times don’t.

So here we are, ready to embark upon another year with some changes on the Committee.

Firstly let me thank the 2011-12 Committee for their excellent work over the past 12 months. Recent inductee Andrew Clempson and long-serving Competition Secretary Russell Pilven are stepping down and on behalf of the Club I would thank them both very much for their service. Pressure of business has caused these two fine fellows to step down, but they’ll sure to be active behind the scenes. Russell will still be the go-to man for booking your Winton garages: you should do that with him now for the August meeting. 0419 527 188.

Russ in particular has been a stalwart for eight years in a taxing (EOFY joke) role, organizing, running, organizing some more, even down to cooking barbecues and oh, yes, winning the championship a couple of times on the twot.

Another old “they say”: they say that what you put into you get out of it, and those who put into the Club always get a huge return for their efforts in satisfaction and enjoyment. So if you want to get more out of the HTCAV – put your hand up to join or help the Committee!

The AGMI would urge everyone to come along

to the AGM on the 27th at the Rising Sun

Hotel. We have secured the big room upstairs and it’s important that we help them regain confidence in our ability to muster a crowd.

Originally we promised them 40 per month and have sometimes delivered as few as 20 or so heads, so we’re getting bounced down to the dining room when they get guaranteed numbers upstairs (we will be in the Dining Room for the July meeting).

Think there should be a better arrangement? Has the Club become a virtual entity that increases in membership but decreases in monthly meeting attendance?

Does the venue put you off? We can borrow other car club’s rooms for a fee but there would be no food and drink on tap and the location would not be as central and more difficult for those who live on the other side of town. Come along and talk about it.

The dollarsOne of our hardest working Committee

members is the Treasurer, David Floyd, whose report appears elsewhere. We are indeed lucky to have Floydy on board, our finances have never looked better and he is as meticulous as one would expect from a professional accountant. The fact that he is also one of the most experienced competition club officials in Victoria is a mega-bonus.

The racingBeing overseas I was not able to enjoy

the traditional Historic Winton on the short track but kept up to date with Natsoft. Thanks to Darren Knight for the official words, to John Clarke for ‘Clarkie’s Comments’ and to Phil Wisewould and Martin Creely for the images. For many this magazine is about pictures of the racing and without the generous allowance by our photographic mates we would be greatly diminished.

From afar it looked like the May Winton is becoming the Mini Grand Prix, the rare time when the little buggers can get their revenge on the big buggers. Group Nb comes out in force for this meeting and it’s

about the only time of the year when we see Na cars down from Sydney, where the earliest of our categories is enthusiastically followed – I wonder why not down here?

Although the Nb field was stronger than Nc, it was the battle for the lead between Ant Read’s Mazda and Michael Hibbert’s Charger that was the contest of the meeting, from all accounts.

Coming up: the State Round at Sandown on July 21-22 and the big VHRR Historic Meeting on the Winton long track August 10-12. Remember that at this meeting our cars are TOP BILLING and the Rose City Trophy for us is a 25-lapper with a pit stop to keep things interesting! A unique event for our group and not to be missed.

Also, if you want an entirely different experience head down to Baskerville for a really great track and the friendliest race people. The more people we can encourage to go there the more likely they are to save what is an excellent driving and spectator venue.

The rallying This side of the Club continues to

attract members, thanks to the tireless efforts of our Rally Captain, Brian Dermott. This month his musings are as interesting as ever, peppered with a few off-track photos taken with various camera phones…

Note that from next year, only Club members will be eligible for the HTCAV Rally Championship. At the last Committee meeting it was resolved that navigators will be offered Social Membership and that in the interest of keeping a handle on trophy costs while maintaining high quality one team trophy will be awarded to first, second and third.

The Christmas celebrationsAbout now we have to plan for the end

of the year presentations and Christmas Party. To keep things fresh the plan is to find somewhere new this year as an alternative to the Eden on the Park, we will try for something as central as possible with the option to stay overnight, which many members seem to enjoy.

Trophies: While everyone agrees that

Historic Touring TorqueJune 2012Page 4

higher quality trophies that comes at a cost and the committee are running their eye over wastage. Giving a trophy to someone who enters one meeting as the sole entrant in the class seems like wastage so new rules have been developed: to qualify for a trophy a competitor must run at least two race meetings per year, or there must be at least two starters in that class. Points recorded will not be affected.

A couple of meetings ago it was suggested that car bits mounted on inscribed pedestals as unique trophies would save money. Investigation suggests the time to polish and mount each item would cost just as much as off-the-shelf. But is anyone able or willing to take on this task?

Entertainment: Poor John Brash has to work so hard when what he’d probably rather do is sit back and have a beer/s and not have to haul equipment in and out to have his Rank Outsiders play for us each year. So we’ll be giving them the year off at the Christmas Party, but they’ll still be playing for us at Sandown.

Some people love the dancing, others think the music interrupts the conversation. What do YOU think? DJ? Karaoke? String quartet? Pavarotti? Please let us know your thoughts so we can get everything lined up.

The magazineInevitably if one guy writes the magazine

boredom will set in, both for writer and reader. We really need variety and that means contributions from more people – and yes that’s you I’m referring to. You don’t have to be a great writer, if you just want to contribute a set of bullet points that’s

fine. If you just want to send in a relevant and interesting photograph, that’s fine too.

Can somebody put up their hand to do some backstories on our cars, or cars being developed or drivers and characters from the Club? Of course they can and we’re waiting to see who it’s going to be!

The social A big round

of applause to Shane Tobin for his efforts as the grandly named Club Liaison Officer. As he’s off on a long holiday around Australia we’re looking at how to keep the role going.

Is there one person (or two) able and willing to be the jolly and welcoming face of the HTCAV at race meetings, towing the trailer (where necessary) perhaps cooking a barbie, keeping the drinks cold and giving membership joining forms to interested parties in return for free membership and free tickets to the meetings?

I’m coming to the view that we might need a Sub Committee to deal with it. That

certainly worked for the Broadford Sprint event and helps spreads the load. The Club really needs help in this area and we need to find an answer – we’ll discuss it at the monthly meeting after the AGM.

See you there!RalphE

Short ShiftsGet well thoughts for Rob Southouse

who in his own words attempted a Superman when trying to clear some of the many tens of thousands of parts in his rambling Mercbits establishment, now sold.

Like the Road Runner he somehow managed to use the principle of the lever to urgently catapult himself a vast distance into something hard and thus into hospital where he now remains nursing a fractured skull and cracked ribs, so it is reported. And they say motor racing is dangerous!

Get well soon old charger – maybe the hardest part of being in hospital is not being able to have a fag…

Sympathy for ex member, ex President and ex Historic Commission eligibility person Paul Burchall whose wife Adele passed away recently. Adele was a very warm personality; not much more is known, a search for Paul Burchall on line achieved 0 results.

Mick Stupka’s Citroen has been featured in an article in Racer magazine, while Clive Massel was interviewed on the new TV show Bumper to Bumper regarding his showpiece Holden HG Monaro. Both Clive and the Monaro are from South Africa, Clive has become something of a latter day Monaro expert and has gone into old Holden spares.

Erratum: In previous articles Historic Touring Torque has published that Darrell Hansen was on probation for a previous driving infringement at the time of his current fine and probation order from CAMS stewards at Phillip Island in March. This was not correct, that probation period had expired before his new one started; the incorrect information was supplied by a state steward and Historic Commission member and Torque apologises for the error. First rule: always check your sources, no matter how plausible they may be.

Highlights from the Historic

Commission Minutes, April meeting

- Negative camber: a maximum of 4 degrees negative camber for Group N cars is being discussed. More camber takes cars too far away from original specifications and appearance. In conjunction with this is the question of tyres for the category. Sixty percent aspect ratio tyres will become in short supply especially in the larger sizes, such as 245. Larger wheels may be necessary.

- Driving standards: it was regarded that the existing rules are sufficient but their communication and application could be addressed. This includes rewording parts of the manual, a specific Code of Conduct for historic meetings, reprinting parts of the manual in Supplementary  Regulations and having an all-officials meeting at the beginning of a historic meeting to address standards.

- Electronic driving aids apart from rev limiters are not allowed.

Nb

One of the bigger Nb grids seen in recent years ensured the racing would be fast and furious on the short circuit, particularly with an incredible twenty Minis entered.

Cooper S legend Henry Draper qualified fastest but would not line up in race one. The Minis of Lindsay Seibler, Jason Armstrong and Andrew Bergan (in the genuine ex Skinny Manton Neptune Racing machine) surged to the front with Armstrong taking the win from Seibler who copped a time penalty post race, dropping him to 16th.

Bergan was runner up from Robert Ford (Mini) and Cameron Shearer (Mustang) with Graham Gulson (Alfa) almost alongside at the finish.

A dramatic warm up lap in race two saw Ford blow a diff putting him out for the weekend and Len Read losing a wheel after the threads stripped. Read must have set some sort of Winton record with seven Minis

running his customer engines at the meeting. Bergan led early as a massive dice erupted

between the Minis of Pete Melick, Anthony Ramadge and the Mustang of David Moran. South Aussie Mal Rutschack had a big lock up at turn one, giving spectators a glimpse of the borrowed Minis undersides.

Mal was driving a borrowed car after some scumbag stole his own car and trailer during the return journey home from Muscle Car Masters last year. Neither has been sighted since. Armstrong squeezed past for another win from Bergan and Seibler.

Draper carved his way through from the back of the grid to finish an amazing tenth, just behind Ian Pringle (Mini).

The close dicing continued in the final with Bergan just falling short at the end, the podium results the same as race two with Draper fourth and Ted Brewster claiming 14th having had to work hard to keep out another famous Mini name in Devlin - this time Linda.

Nc

Anthony Read (Mazda) beat pole man Michael Hibbert (Charger) off the line but had to concede the lead when the fine handling Mopar went around the outside (!) at the gumtree and then held out the RX-2 for the win. Russell Pilven (Datsun 1600) was third.

Read made another gun start in the Mazda (which is on the market)

in race two to lead

while Rod Hotchkin (Falcon) bagged `em up and lost a few spots. John Smallman (BDA Escort) ran wide at turn one and did the same.

The next few laps witnessed some of the best racing ever seen at Winton as Hibbert and Read duked it out at the front. At one point the two cars were side by side for almost half a lap with Hibbert finally grabbing the lead exiting turn one and going on to win by the barest of margins with Pilven again in third followed by Alan McKelvie (Torana) and Leo Tobin (Mustang) who crossed the line almost side by side. Dennis O`Brien (ex Hollywood Mustang) just held out Peter Van Summeren (BDA Escort) for sixth.

Hibbert again found himself chasing Read during the first few laps of the final as Brendon Hare (Capri) fell off at turn one and Pilven came under attack from the bigger engined cars. Hibbert had to find another place on the track to round up the rapid Read and grabbed the win. Tobin was third at the flag but later copped a time penalty, which elevated Hotchkin to the podium after he had his best run for the weekend, just holding out the improving McKelvie.

Michael Holloway, long time Clerk of Course, Chairman of the Stewards Panel and current Mini racer was a guest at the June Committee meeting, bringing with him a plea for a different attitude by competitors when they see misdoings on the track.

Senior officials and stewards can only act on information that they have. Other drivers have the best view, corner marshalls and observers can only see so much and are usually looking in more than one place at once.

If you see an incident happening in front of you that you believe is wrong, it is your duty to report it, he said, because without input the right actions can’t be taken. Michael said of a recent well-publicised incident at Phillip Island: “the stewards issued the right judgement on the evidence that was given, but could not act on the evidence that was not given”.

So what level of misdemeanour should you report? Something as common as

passing under yellows?

“Yes,” said Michael, “because it’s cheating. Take for example a slower car being passed under yellows by, say, three of five cars racing in a tight group. The two cars at the back do the right thing, a safety car is deployed and when it comes in the three cars ahead disappear into the distance, the others have to wait until the start finish line to pass the slower car and are greatly disadvantaged. It’s cheating!”

And what do you do at the meeting? “Tell the Assistant Clerk of Course Judicial and he will refer it either up to the Clerk of Course or down to the Driving Standards Officers, if present. That way the incident is properly logged.”

There you have it. Another of the famous “cunning plans” from a doyen of race officialdom, asking competitors to be involved, to share the responsibility for running fairer and safer race meetings. If you see something, help the Tower out; it’s no use hanging back and then pointing the

finger and saying “aorta” after the fact when you could have provided information that would have helped.

“It’s not dobbing, it’s helping make race meetings safer,” Michael says, “because if we don’t do it the legislators and the politicians will, and then we’ll be in all sorts of strife.”

Michael and Janis are off to Europe on August 4th on a highly enviable tour of major historic events including Concourses d’Elegance at Carmel and Pebble Beach, race meetings at Monterey, Oulton Park, Goodwood, Zandvoort and Spa together with crewing for Andy Newell, a frequent visitor to Phillip Island Classic, who appeared this year with his Palliser and 289-powered Ginetta G4.

We wish them a wonderful trip.

Clarkie’s Comments - Historic WintonSaturday morning dawned bright and

sunny in Far North Queensland, so my brother reassured me.

Unfortunately Winton was one of the most dismal starts to a race weekend I think I’ve ever experienced in my now 15 years in Victoria! The conditions for qualifying were to my mind extremely dangerous.

Mustang 96 performed creditably under the circumstances with no “wets,” having said that, we ran a 1:49 and only finished one second inside the 130% rule. Three other cars finished behind that, but with a show of kindness and understranding in the trying circumstances, were allowed a start. The crux of the problem beside the wet weather was the fact that regularity cars and old chain lubricated motor bikes practised before the Nb cars. The resulting nice bright rainbows mixed with the water and made for a not-so-fun time.

Traction control was very difficult and even slight pressure with the right foot caused the rear end to break away, even in fourth gear. Consequently it became a matter of survival just to keep the machine pointed in the right direction and stay on the track.

The “little old Italian” could not believe his “baby” could perform so badly, and of course the problem rested with the steerer and a severe lack of “cajoles.” He relented a wee bit after doing his usual cruise up and down pit lane and had a few other opinions voiced in the same vein as mine! I guess Tino is mellowing a little and is enjoying his time at just being able to chat with old friends.

But the question remained as to what we could do to help improve times. So underneath the car the man disappeared for about ten minutes and pronounced “all will be well!” And well it was for race one on Saturday afternoon, with a drying track, but still plenty slippery stuff dumped on the corners over the back end of the circuit.

We started position 34 and got away to a reasonable start only to be confronted by one of the Mini flying brigade had dumped a big black stripe right across the ideal line around corners 4 and 5. Made life interesting for the next 4 laps understeering as we navigated the area. Finally worked out maybe better to hug the inside tight and cross the black stripe as close to ninety degrees as possible.

Down the back straight chased a Mini and baby brother Cortina, with the Mini doing a good job of not overtaking the Cortina, but making itself extremely wide enough to stop the white and gold pony from getting through. Finally literally “forced” a passage on the inside grass and ran into the esses with angry buzzing in the boot. Moved up eight spots and positioned ourselves on grid 26 with a best lap of 1:15, and improvement of some 34 seconds on qualifying.

Sunday morning by contrast broke fine and clear and promised to be a better day for motor sport. So away we went for the warmup lap on race two and just on the entrance to the esses there sits a slightly embarrassed little “buzz box” with the off side front wheel dislodged and the body sitting on the front brake disc. Oops!

Second warmup lap, reform and away we go for another five of the best. Starting to now get into the swing of how a big car goes and starting to mix a bit with the more fancied cars on a tight circuit. Finished a credible 20th with a best lap in the 1:14s.

Thinking should be able to jump well for the eight laps of Race 3, and all psyched up for the best start, and make all the grunt count in the run to turn one. The flag dropped, the motor coughed and we rolled forward two car lengths, watched the entire field behind charge by as the heartbeat under bonnet almost choked on an overdose of 100 octane Avgas! Got it rolling again and took

until past turn 2 to get it to clear, but clear it did and the chase was on. From the back came the flying Read “shoe box” after losing its wheel in Race 2 and went past like it had two 1310s installed.

Remembering the words of the Sicilian mentor and after copping a swift kick to the front end which increased the swelling required to think nothing else that the tight seat belt would only make the pain more unbearable, got down to business. Recovered two Minis and started to do a workover on the light blue EH. Took about two laps and made the move down the back straight and drew alongside on the inside line.

Not content with just being there, but wanted a bit more to hit the esses about one car length in front. About this time the fleeting thought was “sex and travel” is going to take control, and I wondered how come the Winton track builders had all of a sudden removed the right, left and right hand corners. We went straight ahead and came out in time to straighten up just outside the dummy grid entrance gate and proceeded to the start finish line. Dropped the three hard earned spots and started the chase again of the Minis and the EH. Got on their tails again and started to think again of fame and riches of finishing somewhere in 16th spot. Well out came the black and white squares and it was all over for another Nb Winton. Oh well, had fun for eight laps, couldn’t complain could we?

Not quite, after checking Natsoft race sheets, had a feeling of being slightly ambushed

and devalued of the few shekels in the pocket. Showed we only completed 7 laps of an 8 lap race. So Nbs dudded again in the interests of time and a slightly running late programme. The question to ask of course is, where’s the value for money for our fun. Why not make the decision earlier and cut five minutes of the two regularity trials, or only have two parade laps for the demos. We’re there to race, not to have our fun cut short. Oh well, I’m sure I would have done the three in front again in one more lap, but then again…

The Minis performed well as would be expected on the tight short circuit, and I guess it was their turn. In fairness they always put on a good show and sometimes the larger circuits don’t usually allow them to show their true potential and entertainment value.

Now for real entertainment value and giant killing performance the Ncs at the pointy end had to be the racing of the weekend. Anthony Read had the “Hiroshima Pic courtesy Phil Wisewould

Historic Touring Torque June 2012 Page 9

Screamer” working it’s little heart out, and put it to Michael Hibbert and the “Purple People Eater.” The Charger performed some outstanding tricks, like driving right around the Mazda on the outside at turn 3, on the new Yoko tyres (pity the compound not available for Nbs).

Anthony then settled into the task of chasing Michael for the rest of the race, and repeated the dosage for each of their races. Never I guess was there any more than three car lengths between them at any time for their three races. A little blue Datsun with a 1 on the door gave good chase for third in the first race, but then appeared to fade a little for the next two, letting the larger cars through.

One of the problems of competing is that you don’t get to see much other action on the day, but had time to see the NCs, and to my mind, was the best racing I’ve seen in many a long time. Looking to next outing for the “white and gold pony,” and trying to decide whether it’s back to Winton Long Track in August or Eastern Creek in September. Thinking it maybe August appearance, as September looks like bringing its own story at the Goodwood Revival. Hopefully some news on that at a later date.

BUT lookout for a rush of “hot Sicilian” blood and the reappearance of the number 85 at Sandown in November. Looks like some rebadging of number 96, and ready

to take on another red pony. Watch for the “wood chips” to fly.

There’s also a rumour of a certain blue Monaro for sale, which could take on a coat of bright Tangerine. If it’s still available after November, the price is right, and with a little push, things just may come to fruition. Don’t know if the driver will be able to “understanna de English,” but…

Well that’s it from me, and looking to Bathurst again next Easter. Let’s plan for a few more Ns to go. As someone past a comment recently, the only problem wrong with Bathurst, is that it’s in New South Wales!

And a Clarkie short report from Bathurst.

The Mustang (96) finished 3rd in Nb Class over 3 litre, improving lap times from 3:10 to 2:52. (not too bad considering first competitive drive on the mountain.) And it fairly flew (and it did do over the hump, actually going airborne each lap at more revs than I should say, but around 250KPH). Down the hill was a blast, the car moving sideways right and left with airlift. (The Cessna 182  gets off the ground around 120KPH, sure glad the lift coefficient is less on the car!!)

Just for the record, out dragged a 350 cu. in. Monaro up the hill (gained around 10 car lengths every time we went up), just enough

to hold him at bay for seven laps, and pulled away three or four lengths on the way down, but beating me under brakes at the bottom and across the top. Something to do with the size of the cajoles, I was told. (Now I know why I squeak with a such high pitched voice!) Had it sideways once rounding Murrays Corner at the bottom of the hill, and a comment was passed about the two black “S” lines left on the Pit Straight as I got the thing pointing the way it should be. After the race, we checked the race seat, and found two brown streaks there also!

Phil Barrow blew two engines, and backed it into the wall up the top. Rob Southouse was plagued early with electrical gremlins, we got that under control, then linkages jamming, not allowing second and third gear.

Justin Brown (BMW), had a rod give him a greeting when he opened the bonnet, after only about four laps of practice, so his weekend finished Friday morning. As reported, Nick did well in the Porsche GT3 with ex member Anthony Moodie who raced a Jag in the 1980s.

Will more than likely go again, but maybe officiate next time, we shall see. Was desperate shortage of people to help all round, and Warren Bossie indicated that his turn at the organization was at its end.

The Bean Counter’s Report Greetings all. First I’d like to say how good the

committee have been to work with again this year. Chris Ralph has done a great job as President, no easy task to keep the momentum going that Dean Bryant built up over his excellent tenure. It has been an active committee. I do not know of another one where the President also edits the magazine and our Vice President, Jervis Ward, handles membership, the club’s website and produces the magazine. Then throw in Russell Pilven’s long and very useful experience, Gordon Cox’s contribution, Nick Cascone’s contribution and that of Andy Clempson and it has all gelled together rather well. However we can always do more and I am sure 2012/2013 will produce just that.

During the year I have again kept the Treasurer’s reports at our general meetings fairly brief and relied on magazine articles every few months to keep members informed of where we are at financially.

Our financial year ends on 31 May. The Income & Expenditure Statement and the Balance sheet are included in this issue, with prior year comparatives. A few comments :

Income & Expenditure statement. Advertising revenue has been brought to account this year at the time advertisers pay for their ad. In prior years, we recognised the income at the time their invoice was raised. Once the advertisers pay, total revenue will be similar to that of prior years. This year we received revenue from the club permit scheme. We charged $25 per permit. Many thanks to Gordon Cox for his work there. Subscription income was up on last year. We had 246 members at 31 May 2012. This compares favourably to the 225 members we had at 31 May 2011. A membership base of over 200 over recent years is good news.

You will see the large increase in the cost of trophies this year. This was a combination of more trophies, much more engraving on each to give proper recognition and a further improvement in their quality. However it is fair to say the cost was still higher than we had hoped. Next year we shall reassess some areas and set a budget. Our marketing costs were up with our $2,900 sponsorship with the Gasolene program.

Overall we have a surplus of $963 for the year. Prior year surpluses were $3,690 for 2011, $2,243 for 2010, $1,413 for 2009, $3,065 for 2008 and $859 for 2007.

Balance sheet. This records our assets & liabilities. Our bank accounts total $38,457 at year end, $34,035 at the same time last year. We had substantial funds in the cheque account at 31 May. We have since transferred more onto term deposit.

The other main assets are our fixed assets. These are recorded at cost, $6,548 in total and they are depreciated from there, each year. The main items are the club trailer, $2,729, and its gazebo, $1,800. These were both acquired in February 2010. Post race nibbles are an important part of our “mantra” and the trailer has been invaluable for those activities.

Our overall net asset position at 31 May 2012 is $45,845, at 31 May 2011 it was $44,882. We are in good shape financially.

In closing I would thank member for their support. I joined the club at the AGM in June 2005 and have been Treasurer since that time. I have decided to stand again and am looking forward to it.

Sadly, a quarter of the entries DNFed although only one of these - Mockett’s Rocket - involved bent metal and that was not too serious. Since five of these DNFers are previous podium placers, it seems that mechanical stress is working its way into our numbers.

Don’t forget this is all based on the scratch results - the ‘Outright’ competition, with no handicap involved. So it is all the more amazing that in that Top 6, in amongst the 6 litre V8s, are three four cylinder cars. Andy White and Ashley Yelds in the baby blue Volvo Amazon, which looks very like the Tom Trana driven works

cars of the period, meet up once a year - they live in London and Darwin - for Targa and go for it hell for leather from the first stage onwards. Its a 2 litre with overdrive and what this package lacks in grunt it makes up for in corner speed - especially downhill, where this crew is terrifying to watch.

Behind Andy and Ash is another inspiring result - Victorians Colin Byrne and Paul Stoopman in a self-prepared 1970 Alfa GTV2000. As we reported in the event report last month, Colin was only 33 secs behind the Wilson’s Perana in 6th position outright when the throttle anchor onto the

manifold broke off on the first stage on the last day and dropped them some 20 minutes back to 18th place - a position which would be pretty good for a 71 Alfa with a mere 150 bhp at the rear wheels. It shows that racing improves the breed - Colin is an experienced Group S racer. Another crew only just in their 30s, this showing in an old classic bodes well for the future.

For anyone who knows Ross Steuert from his days as proprietor of Ritters the Land Rover gurus, or associates him with big sports cars - the V12 Jag E Type and V8 Triumph TR8 - will be amazed to see Ross and Jill right up there in the 1-litre

The 2012 Targa season is halfway through already, with by far the longest and probably decisive event now run. With nearly as many competitive kilometres as the other three Targas together, Targa Tasmania results will very likely have a big effect on the 2012

Rally Championship. And that’s OK because the event was truly a Big Test of crews and cars, which make the little two dayers more like a play weekend. Here are the cumulative results for all the 32 cars which have entered the HTCAV Rally Championship in 2012:

Page 12Historic Touring Torque June 2012

Ford Anglia. Complaining that something was limiting the revs to a mere 7000, the beautifully self-prepared car running in limited modified spec with 4-speed gearbox and a real 105E motor is so perfectly in the spirit of the historic racing movement in Australia.

But out front - and separated at the end of Targa by a tiny 8 seconds - are the very nice and very original Capri Perana of brothers Bernie and John Wilson and our inaugural Championship winners Pete and Sari Ullrich in the trusty Jensen.  With a fair bit of rain this year the big V8s were a handful and these two experienced and wise crews had six days of the most intense concentration to bring the cars home intact and ready to do another 600+ competitive kilometres.

In 4th spot comes Our Great Leader in his standard looking Orange Perana. Ralphie showed everyone what a rookie rallyer can do if he’s already a seasoned racer, punting a car with plenty of power but dodgy handling and which created the continuous impression of impending breakdown but never did thanks to some very experienced fettling. Mansfield boy Gus Muscara and experienced Targa driver Gary Hughes from Hobart, both gun mechanics - Gus a V8 specialist from the Thunderdome days and Gary more used

to mighty turbo boost valves on his RX7 - chased the Ford all over Tasmania in Chris’ sooty Disco and every service stop was a challenge. By the end, Gary and Gus had driven 20% further than the rally car.

Rounding out the top 6 are the redoubtable Wayne Pfingst and John Loth from Brisvegas in the mysterious yellow

XU4 Torana. To most people, this looks like a 4 door LJ Torana, but these were never XU1s. Wayne maintains that a few very special Queensland XU4s escaped from the factory in 1972 - and that even if they didn’t, they should have done. So he’s restored one even down to very convincing - sorry authentic - badges and

decals and uses it to compete in virtually every Targa there is - with decent midfield results and the occasional brilliant stage time just to prove he can do it when he’s in the mood. For anyone who plans to visit a tarmac rally, aim for the yellow LJ at the end of the day to be offered a very wet and very cold Brizzy beer.

ADELAIDE NEXT

None of our top 20 scored any points in Round 1 - Targa Wrest Point - and that may well be the case in Round 3, the rejuvenated and redesigned Superloc Targa Adelaide.

Despite being thrown open to modern cars after 12 years of Classics only, the entry is modest. There are only 41 classic cars, a similar number of moderns and just under 20 regularity and tour entries (where you pay thousands to drive around at in your own traffic jam all day on closed roads at the posted limit). Historic tourers account for just 12 entries (29%) and none of our top five are entered - the Pfingst Loth LJ is the highest placed. With only 40 odd entries and 235 competitive kilometres spread over four days, it is impossible for any change to the Championship top order to occur. However, Capn Richard Woodward is abandoning his Airline Pilots Association work for that week, to fire the yellow Monaro 350 down the bendy, bouncy stages in the Adelaide Hills which he knows so well.

This weak entry is a shame because it

Barry Devlin looked after three Minis including Henry Draper’s.

Pay for 6 days, get 3.5. Alloy torsional dampers explode clutches, crack blocks, shake teeth off crank gears which go through the mesh into the oil pump. Stops your event.

READ ON - Appendix J Revival ReportWell, A lot has happened since I

started out on this quest. I have spoken to many Nb competitors and discussed many issues. One is the use of the big “J” on the side of our cars.

Many think it is a good idea and have no problem putting them on. Others think it is a good idea and still won’t put one on. Others make a promise and don’t do it anyway. Some just don’t like it. From my perspective and the reason I am pushing this is to differentiate pre 65 cars from Nc. I feel very strongly about it. Appendix J was a class run in Australia up until the end of 1964. We should not be competing against cars that were raced in the early 70’s. If we have to do this from time to time, then I believe that we should look different. An orange dot on the window means nothing to most people other than you have a dot on the window. It can be seen by the commentators apparently. Anyway, just have a look at some photos from PI or Winton and you may get the idea. I have had an email from the Eligibility guy from WA. They have now adopted the idea for all pre 65 Saloon cars.

Now, to other issues. I would like to hear from Appendix J competitors regarding the use of radial tyres; or more specifically the banning of Hoosiers for our Appendix J challenge. Most think this is a good idea. I haven’t had much negative response to this other than from one of my customers! Some think that some competitors will use radials for the challenge and switch back to rags for other events, thus not using the idea of the savings to be had. I think it doesn’t matter as they are the big spenders any way. Please

comment on our forum.

The next round in July at Sandown is getting a good following. I have many promises from competitors regarding this. I have spoken to everyone on the mailing list and entries are looking good at this stage. I have spoken to Colin and Gale Smith and if we can get 15 cars we will run a split grid. That means that cars with a “J” on the side will be gridded together and start at a different time to the pace setters. Doesn’t seem much, but it means that we are getting recognition, or more precisely getting our recognition back! I am urging anyone with a J car to support this event. Winton Historic and Sandown Historic are now doing the right thing by running separate Nb and Nc races after Eastern Creek proved it would work. Please comment on the forum or ring me direct with any other ideas that would help in this regard. Don’t forget that entries at the cheap rate close on the 29th June and on the 6th July at the dearer rate. And also to be eligible you must have a “J” on the side of your car. Contact me if this is an issue. I still have a few left.

Another item I would like to brandish about was brought about when Appendix J finished in Australia at the end of 64. J cars that did not fit into the new touring car categories were raced as “Sports Racing closed”. These cars were modified along the latter half of the 60’s and culminated in the most famous one of them all ie. Peter Brocks Austin A30. Wouldn’t it be great to see replicas of the creations such as a MK11 Zepher with a 289 in it or even stranger, an Imp with a similar power plant. Mick, eat your heart out! And it was road registered. There was also pretty quick VW’s and also Morris Minors with MGB engines or Bob Gill’s Anglia with a Falcon engine and another with a twin cam, and an Austin Lancer with a 179 supercharged engine. Or how about a Humpy with a 327 Chev? Great stuff. Yes, I know we have an historic category catering for Sports Sedans, but this class is for genuine cars and the term “Sports Sedans” didn’t come on the scene until about 1972. All food for thought.

looks like Octagon have really made some great changes. Wayville Showgrounds will be the centre of the world , where the Goyder Pavilion (the world biggest carpeted, air-conditioned shed) will be the security park and service centre and expo at

the end of every day. And keeping things simple and to create a real entertainment for the petrol heads of Adelaide in the lead up to the Clipsal V8s, there will be a night prologue around the roads of the Showground. With stands, some lights in the darkness, slithery smoky hairpins and blasts between right angle corners, this

could be a great show. Tattle took part in the last night event organised by Octagon, which was a bit of a hoot. No-one could see much, especially the route markers were not easy to see, so there were cars going the

wrong way and getting lost. Anything with a V8 added to the obscurity by making tyre smoke but no one hit any of the many things which were there to be hit. Lets hope the same is true in Adelaide.

The course looks very interesting, with plenty of bendy shit like the Basket Range and Montacute, and one of the toughest (as in hardest to get right) stages we do - Castambul. This is the Gorge Rd at max g down to the Corkscrew turn off, up those savagely tight and steep hairpins where it is so hard to keep the wheels on the ground before snaking up to the junction with the Montacute road and hooning down it. There are some genuinely new stages and once again Clark of the Course Stuart Benson has done a super job in providing a testing, varied but enjoyable track.

New Members: The meeting welcome Geoff Vernon who has a ‘63 blue Cortina.

There were no guests.President’s Report: (per Jervis Ward)- The costs were explained regarding trophies etc.- The new rally membership changes were

explained- The point score is doing well with the Nick

changes of last year.- Driving standards at historic meetings: Chris

Ralph was invited to attend a CAMS Historic meeting in late April. Various recommendations were made which will be published after the meeting’s minutes are distributed.

- Michael Holloway will be invited to address the Committee regarding his views on the matter.

There was no Vice President’s report.Secretary’s report: Dean Bryant- The previous minutes were published on page 9

of the last magazine - The minutes were passed by passed: proposed

Fast Johnny, seconded: Michael Hibbert – The 2012/13 Committee nominations were read out.

The Treasurer’s Report: David Floyd- There is approx $16,000 in the cheque account,

$20, 600 in the Term deposit, giving a total of $37,000 all up

- It is expected that the Club will make a small surplus this year

- Changes to the Corporations Act were explained - some affect us - mostly committee positions. Act comes out in December.

- Directors’ cover looked at and decided not necessary at this time.

Discussion:- Len Read asked about next year Gasoline

sponsor money and mentioned the lack of Group Nb exposure.

- Eddie Dobbs said we are still getting exposure from this

- Jervis mentioned we did negotiate well with them.

- David Brown mentioned the fact the producer has a Torana club car and maybe that tends to sway the exposure issue. They also have national coverage now.

- Greg Miles also stated that the Nc people are more likely to watch and this drives the bias possibly.

- Eddie said their audience covers all genres of old cars, David said they simply look at media statistics

- Jervis mentioned sponsorship and trophy costs will be discussed

Competition Report: Russell Pilven- King of Winton to Mick Hibbert- A great weekend, a few small genuine accidents

but nothing of note.- Friday was bad weather but got better as the

weekend went on.- Nc numbers down possibly due to the Winton

long track event or just the fact big cars struggle up there.

- John Clarke said Sat morning qualifying was dangerous due to the bikes out first. Oil on track.

- Mick Hibbert said Nb and Nc always run last. Len said they use cars with headlights for this reason.

- John said they still cut our races short also.- Mick said the HQs always got the same

treatment as well.- Video upstairs.AHTCA: Nick Cascone absent- A suggestion from the floor to use AHTCA

funds to support national websiteHistoric Commission: Bill CutlerBill commented about the Historic Commission

meeting, but Minutes not approved yet- A lot of time spent on Group N and driver

standards: it’s still a work in progress - At Historic Sandown Bob Piper will look

into this issue.- CAMS rules appear the be ok but will be

rewritten to suit the times- At historic meetings a daily meeting will be held

directly to discuss this issue and possible problems/drivers to watch etc

- Serial pests may not invited in the future - just a possibility. It’s a delicate issue and needs to be addressed very carefully and properly.

- Michael Holloway said that if you have a problem with a driver you need to go to the tower about it. We need to re-educate about this issue.

- There are no guarantees that proper process will always be followed but this is the aim. The idea of meetings each day will assist with this.

- David Browne asked that once someone has done their time and then reoffends - will his priors be assessed in penalty issue - Bill said if it’s written in his licence this would happen and also there is an incident data base that the HC is reactivating to counter this and some other issues, ie re new licence issue when a ‘bad’ licence is ‘lost’. It’s all about knowing where the line in the sand is.

- Jervis said this issue comes up every few years or so.

- Our new member was assured that on the whole there are usually no dramas.

- Russ said the video tonight shows the good driving that is the norm in the club. It goes back to the win at all cost issue that has re-emerged with some.

- There are some non-members that display this feeling re Winton according to Len - re Ian Pringle’s car being hit on the weekend. He should have filled an incident report.

- Ian Watt said you must go to scrutiny after impact but apparently it’s not mandatory at every event.

Bill had more on eligibility: - Electronic driver aids have been forbidden - no

recording device permitted that wasn’t available in the day. This is not in the spirit of our racing - this applies to all historic categories. No shift lights either.

- Rev limiters and cameras are okAll this is in the bookRoll over protection: - If you desire to build a Brown-David type cage

you are welcome providing it is engineered and homologated and does not go outside the habitable area.

- But what defines bodywork is still not defined. Some dashes are steel

and require cutting which needs to be rectified.- This issue is not resolved although David

Browne is adamant it is clear in the rules.Bill said the conflict between the FIA and Group

N rules is what is required to be rectified.

- David mentioned specifics and this highlighted the issue.

- At HC level this is being sought to be clarified to create a level playing field.

- The second consideration is the fact half cages are still permitted but this is being reviewed. It won’t be mandatory to have a full cage but it being suggested as a good idea.

(David said half cages are not allowed in any registered cars anyway).

- Bill said the HC are reticent to make changes to rules that affect the owner’s use of the car. Therefore recommendations will be issued.

- David Twigg said a competitor contacted him with a competitor who wishes to not have a cage at all.

Eligibility: David Twigg - The HC is creating a substitute component list.- Clubs are being asked to provide what

component substitutions have happened to add to this list.

- E85 fuel is ok to use but you can’t blend it.- Tyres- there is a bulletin for 50 series on 8” rims

for use until the end of the year.- Options re lower profile and bigger rims are

being considered- Fuel tanks: Recommendation as of Jan next

year should be foam filled.Membership: Jervis WardCompetition 183, 55 social, 7 honorary, 245

total. Nonfinancial 25 Club plates membership shows biggest growth

this year. Rule changes to a maximum of two new cars per year per club member have been brought in to combat the rort using the Club and Gordon Cox’s time to put cheap reg on imports for re-sale.

Newsletter: it went out earlyGeneral Business:- Doug Growcott’s Torana for sale- John Luxmoore - 50 yrs. of Cortinas - 251 of

them at Hume Weir, Queen’s birthday weekend. Harry Firth will talk at the sat nite dinner.

- Ken Zinner said former president Paul Burchall’s wife passed away last week.

- John Clarke complained about the room downstairs tonight but was reassured that this is only a temporary measure.

- John Clarke complained about the Magazine - he’s disappointed with the amount of Targa v Bathurst and some of the articles he wrote were not printed - why not??

Can we retrospectively print this please?- If you take the time to lodge an article is should

be printed. Ralphy will respond to this at the next meeting.

- Appendix J - Email from W.A. to say that they are using the

big J letter on cars idea as well.- Interstaters are building humpies also.- July meeting will have a split grid if we get 15

cars - We will work out a way to split the starts of Nb

and Nc cars.- Jervis said make an ad for the newsletter on this.- Discussed the over and under etc and grid

divisions. Maybe under and over 2 litres - but you have to prove that it would work.

- We need to discuss re P.I. break upsMeeting closed 9.45pm.

No-one owns a number, but we understand how nice it is to have a regular one on your car.

Ultimately the Chief Steward or Race Sectary of the meeting issue the numbers for each event. However the Club tries to allocate numbers to our members to save members money and angst. Many events do not allow triple digit numbers, so that leaves 180+ competition members vying for 99 numbers. We often supply a list of the HTCAV member numbers to promoters of Victorian meetings. In most cases they will give preference to the HTCAV member for those allocated numbers on the list over other entrants. The same rules apply interstate which is why you often end up with a different number when your race interstate.

As stated above we have more competitors than we do numbers. While not all competitive members require numbers, we have used all 99 and we still need to keep allocating more. To have a number allocated & retained you must Be a continous financial member and Use the number at least once every 2 years. These rules still do not

guarantee you exclusive usage of a number! They have been devised as way for the committee to make a fair judgement of when we can consider reallocating unused or infrequently used numbers. Other factors that may be considered re the 2 year usage rule are special circumstances that may prevent a member from competing at their intended meetings (e.g.. unexpected engine blow ups!)

Our solution to the above conundrum is “a” numbers. What we have begun to do is allocate new members a number that is already in use by another member. So if we have a new member join with a Mustang we would look to use the same number as used on a small car like a Mini or maybe Cortina. e.g.. Glenn Everitt newly joined has been given #52a (for his GT Falcon) while John Smallman retains #52 (for his BDA Escort). At most larger meetings these cars would not be in the same race, however if they did then John would use #52 and Glenn would have a different number allocated by the event organiser (hopefully 5 or 2 so major change is necessary)! Importantly nobody runs with the “a” on their car.

Pointscore Rules 20121. Only HTCAV financial competition members

are included in the pointscore.2. Points are awarded per race for finishers 1

through 6 dependent on the number of starters in each class. (See table below for details).

3. The Competition Calendar shows which events are eligible for points for a year.

4. Only HTCAV financial competition members are included as starters in eligible Victorian events.

5. Three points are allocated for participating (signing on) at an event.

6. One point is allocated for the fastest timed lap of the event, for each class, during racing but not including qualifying.

7. In a handicap race eight points will be allocated to each and every finisher of that race

8. Points are allocated for finishers, 1st through to 6th in each class, in each race of an event (to a maximum of 3 races). If an event has more than 3 races, the last 3 races only will be scored.

9. Championship Points are calculated from a competitor’s best 5 events during a year, which may include one nominated interstate event. Any Interstate, Group N, event where a CAMS Provisional Circuit (formerly known as C3) Licence holder can participate is eligible for inclusion.

10. At interstate events all class cars are counted as starters - not just HTCAV members.

11. It is the competitors responsibility to collect interstate results sheets and supply them to the competition secretary for inclusion in the HTCAV pointscore no later than November 15 of that year. Interstate events will be scored using the HTCAV pointscore system.

12. If a car commences qualifing, it is counted as a starter in all races wether it actually starts them or not.

13. If a car starts a race, but has a DNF, it gets 0 points, but is counted as a starter.

14. Where the grid is separated into fast and slow (Not Over and Under), The results shall be deemed as one large race with the faster grid being the first finishers and the slower thereafter.

15. If members change classes their points stay within each class but can be added for Total Points.

16. Members may race as many classes as they like at an event, but can score points in only one nominated class.

This one class may be nominated post event, but no more than 3 days after the event. It is a member’s responsibility to make the Competition Secretary aware of their nominated car. Points will not be allocated retrospectively.17. Other race series such as the VSRS

andVSCRC use different methods to score their series. This does not affect the HTCAV’s pointscore system.

18. Where there is no result deemed in a race, there will be no points allocated for that race. 3 points will still be allocated for participating at that event.

19. In the event of a Club Championship draw, there will be a count back. The competitor with the highest number of superior placings will be declared the winner

20. Certificate of Description (COD) cars will run in special classes “shadowing” the pointscore classes ie a COD 302 Mustang would run in “NC COD 3501-5000”.
