FERDINAND MAGELLAN, WORLD EXPLORER—May 20, 2018 Speaker: Jerry Kahan Mr. Kahan traced Magellan’s life and then took us on the fateful, famous journey to find the Spice Islands that saw Magellan himself perish, and only 18 survive of the original 270 who started the voyage. He also shared photos from his visit to the life-size replica of Magellan’s ship Victoria on display in southern Chile, near where Magellan and his men crossed from the Atlantic to Pacific in what became known as the Strait of Magellan.

DOCUMENTARY FILM SCREENING: JOSIAH—May 31, 2018

Through excerpts from Josiah Henson’s autobiography, old photographs, reenactments, and interviews with experts and Henson’s descendants, JOSIAH retells the dramatic true story of Henson’s life in bondage and eventual escape with his family to freedom in Canada. Henson’s life and autobiography inspired the character of Uncle Tom in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which in turn was a major factor in the abolitionist cause and the Civil War. While Henson himself, who worked as an overseer and became a preacher while still enslaved, led a unique and extraordinary life, his story sheds broader light on the profound cruelties of slavery and the incredible ways in which enslaved people resisted and even sometimes found their way to freedom.

HSBC ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING, followed by THE HISTORY SLAVERY IN BALTIMORE COUNTY—June 24, 2018 Speakers: Vicki Young, Bill Barry, A. Anokwale Anansesemfo

At the Annual Meeting, HSBC President Vicki Young delivered an illustrated presentation on the state of the Historical Society, with highlights from the past year and exciting projects coming soon. Eight new members were then elected to the HSBC Board of Directors (please see pp. 2-3) and light refreshments were served.

Following the Annual Meeting was our Sunday Speaker presentation with Bill Barry

and special guest Ranger A. Anokwale Anansesemfo of Hampton National Historical Site. Mr. Barry traced the origins of slavery in Maryland and its development and eventual decline in Baltimore County, which had one of the smallest populations of enslaved people in Maryland by the time of the Civil War. Ranger Anansesemfo discussed some general principles she uses to interpret and speak about the history of slavery. She then turned to the history of the Ridgely family’s use of enslaved and indentured labor. A large audience had many questions for both speakers about their deeply engaging talks.
