From Kyoto to the World

The Department of Japanese Food Culture was established in April 2019 in order to cultivate individuals who will contribute to the Japanese food culture in future generations.

Following the registration of “Traditional Japanese Cuisine” to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2013, there is a growing demand for educating people who can take the lead in the preservation of the values of Japanese food culture and develop it. In order to meet such requirement, our curriculum for Japanese food culture enables students to learn a wide and diverse range of subjects including historical studies, literature, business administration, tourism, food science, and agriculture. On the basis of findings gained through a liberal arts education and International Kyoto Studies Program (compulsory subject for the students of the Faculty of Letters), the students deepen their expertise by reading literature and carrying out fieldwork.

Topics

Our department provides students with an opportunity to experience the essence of Japanese food culture through a unique seminar

and workshop in Kyoto, which is considered the heart of Japanese traditional culture.
