    Life in Southampton in the 13th century (1200s)...

    Southampton‛s main industries were: wool and shipbuilding.This would have made Southampton relatively wealthy and important. As a result, there was a constant threat that France would want to invade.

    can you remember from last lesson what this word means?

    After the French attacked in 1338, Edward III commanded that a huge wall be built around Southampton overlooking the sea.

    He was furious that the townspeople had allowed the French to attack and steal all his wine and goods!

    Once the wall was complete (which took many years) its upkeep was divided amongst the townspeople. House owners had a stretch of the wall to look after and trade guilds looked after the towers. The shoemakers and saddlers were in charge of Arundel Tower.
