History of Dentures
Bites of information about earlier forms of denture that will make you thankful you’re born in
the era of modern denture clinic
Did you know that dentures have a long history that’s almost as long as mankind?
Apparently, the Paleolithic sustenance that our ancestors consumed wasn’t enough to give them healthy and strong teeth – or perhaps, it was their primordial lifestyle that led them to improvising false teeth.
Primitive dentures
Mexican Dentures
The very first known dentures (made of animal’s teeth) were found in Mexico and can be traced back as early as 2500 BC.
Etruscan Dentures
In 700 BC, pre Roman civilisation in Italy, the Etruscans used animal and dead human’s teeth bound together by a gold band.
Mayan DenturesThen around 600 BC, ancient Mayan’s experimented with tooth replacement and used carved stones and seashells
Egyptian DenturesFollowed by Egyptians in 300 BC, who used gold and silver wires to hold tooth replacement in place.
Wooden dentures
Japanese DenturesIn 15th century, Japan invented wooden dentures using softened beeswax to create impression and some tree species to carve dentures from.
Ivory dentures
Ivory carved dentures came out around 17th century. Combinations of animal, human, and ivory were used to fashion these dentures, which were held together by springs and gold wires.
The most prominent wearer of these kinds of dentures was George Washington, who had to cut his 2nd inaugural address to 135 words due to the pain his dentures caused.
Waterloo dentures
When the war broke in 18th century, looters and scavengers took advantage of this time to pull teeth from dead soldiers and sold them to dentists
It happened to be the same time when people’s sugar consumption was high, so tooth replacement treatment was in demand
Vulcanite dentures
Around 18th century was also the time when porcelain teeth became available and eventually, replaced the use of dead human’s teeth for dentures.
The discovery of vulcanite in 1850’s paved way to cheaper and well-fitted dentures that the middle-class can afford.
Acrylic–Modern dentures
Modern dentures have come a long way since the discovery of acrylic resin for denture base and denture teeth in the early 20th century.
A modern denture clinic now crafts top-quality teeth replacements using new and revolutionized plastics, adhesives, porcelain, zirconium, implants, and impression materials which give its wearer an all-natural looking smile.
