What horror films involve.• Horror films usually deal with the viewer's nightmares,

fears and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the invasion of the evil, an event or the supernatural into the everyday world.

• Horror film characters are usually ghosts, vampires, demons, torture, evil witches, monsters, zombies and serial killers.

• Every horror movie is different but most of the movies have the typical horror story line.

1890-1920s• A film creator called Georges Méliès made a film best

known as Le Manoir du Diable and the film is usually recognised as the first horror film.

• In 1910, Edison Studios produced the first film version of Frankenstein.

• German film makers would influence horror films significantly because it was during the Weimar Republic.

1930s–1940s

• Universal Pictures began a gothic horror film series that was found to be very popular.

• Some films mixed science fiction with gothic horror which mirrored the earlier German films that were made during the Weimar Republic.

• With the horror genre becoming more popular, actors were beginning to build a careers in horror films, some of these actors included Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi.

1950s–1960s

• With advances in technology a lot more horror films were being produced and some of these featured humanity overcoming threats from alien invasions and deadly mutations to people.

• Ghosts and monsters still remained a popular feature of the horror genre, but many films used the supernatural idea to express the horror.

1970s–1980s• "Evil children“ became popular subjects in the horror genre during this

time period. • The Exorcist which was made in 1973 was the first movie with a significant

commercial success.• The Shining received many critics and viewers had lots of negative

feedback towards the film and is now known as one of Hollywood's most classic horror films.

• The 1980s saw a wave of gory horror films, most of them were panned by critics but became cult classics and later saw success with critics. An example of these films include Fright Night and the Gremlins.

1990s

• The 1990s was similar to the 1980s, they had the same themes for the horror genre.

• Even though the themes were the same, horror films became less popular in this time period because there was so many releases of gore films in the 1980s.

• Scream made the audience re connect with horror and it became more self-mockingly ironic.

2000s• In the 2000s a lot more horror film were being released.• Final Destination marked a successful revival of teen-centered horror

and was followed by four sequels.• A list of the popular horror films that were released are: The Exorcist,

Silent Hill, Hellboy, and the Saw film series.• As there is a bigger budget for horror films and the technology had

advanced, the horror films have a bigger audience.
