    Globe Trivia

    Held the acting company Lord Chamberlains Men -- Shakespeare

    was a member/shareholder.

    Was built from stolen materials from their former theatre shut down by

    its Puritan owner. Had a thrust stage -- audience sits on three sides.

    Had 1500+ audience capacity.

    Had no actresses.Female characters had to be played by young boys.

    The Elizabethan general public stood in the yard, the ground

    around the stage.

    The gentry would pay to sit in the galleries often using cushions forcomfort!

    Rich nobles could watch the play from a chair set on the side of theGlobe stage itself.

    Commoners

    Paid one penny to stand in the pit/yard Responsible for crazy stuff happening in

    the pit

    Threw rotten fruit and vegetables if theydidnt like the play

    Likely spread the Bubonic plague

    In 1613, the Globe Theatre caught fire during theproduction ofHenry VIIIand burned to the ground.

    Rebuilt in 1614, it was closed by the Puritans in 1642 and demolishedin 1644.

    The New Globe Theatre opened in 1997.

    Sam Wanamaker

    Was an actor/director

    Founded the Shakespeare Globe Trust to rebuild the Globe

    Theatre in London, England

    Realized his dream of completing this amazing project

    Lived to see the first two sections of the Globe unveiled in 1992

    (as he died in 1993)

    New Globe: The project was completed June 1997.

    particular the Globe Theatre.

    Students will understand the function of the

    theatre, its design, and function.

    Students will have an understanding of

    entertainment and its importance to a

    Elizabethan society.

    included on the end of unit assessment.

Recommended
