The term Watch comes from an Old English word “woecce” which means

watchman. As in old days watches were worn by watchmen to keep

time for their shifts.

The current  sexagesimal system (base of 60) originated with the

Sumerian people and passed down from Babylonians to current modern

era.

Time keeping was essential since the dawn of very first civilization. In old days of farming it was essential to sow seeds, water, and reap fruits,

vegetables etc. at the correct time of day.

In the olden days people used water clocks, sundials,

candle clocks and hourglasses to keep track of time.

Then the breakthrough was the crown wheel clocks that were

mainstream from 14th to 18th century. Though they were inaccurate in

showing the correct time.

This problem of inaccuracy was solved with the invention of springs and pendulum power clocks in 16th

and 17th century. Such clocks increased accuracy of time and became much more common in

homes.
