From the Principal’s Desk……. Welcome to the conclusion of week 3, our first full week of school. So much is happening in the building. Over the next two weeks, we are testing students in their ELA and math classes so that we may determine a baseline as to where they are currently and then measure growth throughout the year. We are also in the midst of Constitution Week and each of our social studies teachers has been connecting it to our students’ lessons. Volleyball and cross country are in full swing and there are lots of participants. Everyone seems to be back into the routine of school. On Monday, our students discovered that the new GaGa Ball courts were installed. It was an absolute mad rush to recess. Kids were very excited and I imagine they will see a ton of use. I wanted to thank Michelle Eichler, Kiwanis, and all of our community members who donated money to bring our playground to life. In terms of student safety, I have noticed an opportunity where we can improve. It deals directly with the end of the school day. I have noticed that there are people who pick up their students from the teacher lot. This creates an unsafe situation with students crossing in front of buses, through the visitor parking lot. Please use the satellite lot that is located on the north side of the school. Further, as you enter to go into the back pick- up loop, there are two things that are important to recognize. First, as you enter, there is a stop sign, and a crosswalk. Please make sure that the crosswalk is always open. As you progress to pick up your student in the back loop, please do not exit the lane. Follow it all the way through the back of the building and out through the exit. My feeling is always that predictability builds trust. It also allows us to create a safe environment for our children. We have the expectation that parents want to do what is safe. Thank you for following our procedures and making sure that each and every student has a safe walk or ride home. HIVE JIVE NEWSLETTER WILLIAMSTON MIDDLE SCHOOL September 15, 2017

Ele’s Group

Williamston Middle School Counseling Department

September 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We are excited to offer a support group for grieving students this fall. The group is run jointly by Ele’s Place and Williamston Middle School. This program will be offered during the school day, once a week for 8 weeks and is designed to help students who have experienced the death of someone important to them. In small group sessions, students will have the opportunity to talk about their feelings and experiences with others who understand, express their feelings through a variety of activities and learn positive coping skills. Groups will be led by Ele’s Place Staff or a trained Ele’s Place volunteer, and Mrs. McKinney, WMS Counselor.

Ele’s Place is a non-profit community agency that has been offering grief support groups to children and their families for 20 years. We at Williamston Middle School are pleased to work together with Ele’s Place to offer this very special opportunity to your child. We know that children and teens can be deeply affected by the death of someone close to them, and we have seen children’s behavior, self-esteem and school performance suffer as a result of their grief.

If you believe your child would benefit from this experience, please contact me at 655-4668 ext. 6520 or [email protected]. A completed permission form is needed to begin the program. Permission forms are also available in the office. Permission forms are due to me by September 25th, and the group will begin the first week in October.

Sincerely,

Anne McKinneyAnne McKinneyAnne McKinneyAnne McKinney Counselor, Williamston Middle School
