From the Co-EditorDear Members,
In the past few months, we have gone through a sad period. We lost our beloved past president, Dr.
C O PUN. He is a great teacher and mentor. In this issue of HKCC newsletter, we continue to express
our grieving. Articles contributed by Dr. PUN’s family, Dr. CHIU Chi Suen, Dr. Iris KWAN, Prof. Alice
KONG, Dr. Jennifer KWOK, Dr. TSANG Kin Keung are included in this issue.
The 23rd Annual Scientic Congress was nished on 31st May 2015 successfully. In this year, Dr. LAU
Chu Pak spoke on ‘Silent Atrial Fibrillation: a New Paradigm foe Stroke Prevention’ in Dr. C O PUN
Memorial lecture. The lecture is very helpful to our daily practice and I am sure more exciting
cardiology topics will be covered in the future Dr. C O Pun Memorial lecture.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the winners of this year’s ‘Best Abstract’ (Dr. LEE
Kang Yin, Michael from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dr. Randolph WONG from Prince of Wales Hospital
and Dr. YUNG Chi Yui from Ruttonjee and Tang Shiu Kin Hospitals) and ‘Best PCI cases’ session
(Dr. Arthur CHAN from Tuen Mun Hospital, Dr. KO Kwok Chun, Jason from Kwong Wah Hospital,
Dr. TSANG Chun Fung, Sunny from Queen Elizabeth Hospital). The abstract on TAVI authored by
Dr. LEE Kang Yin, Michael highlighted the clinical pearls acquired in the past 4 years’ practice of TAVI
in Hong Kong and the PCI case on ‘Spontaneous coronary artery dissection’ presented by Dr. KO
Kwok Chun, Jason illustrated the clinic dilemma we encounter regularly.
In the future, we would like to understand more of our college’s young fellows and members. We will
invite some of them to contribute article to this newsletter. The content might include their overseas
training experience, personal interests and suggestions to our college. If any of our members or
fellows would like to contribute, please contact our secretariat.
Finally, I wish you have a good summer.

Patrick

I rst met Dr. PUN during my rst year of cardiology training. At that time, he was already very
concerned about my future training and research interest. To be honest, during my medical
training, I had never had such a prestigious senior who would even talk to me, let alone show
such great interest in my training and give precious advice. You could tell that he really wanted
all of us to have the best training in cardiology. He was a warm, kind and humble gentleman. I
would miss always seeing him in conferences.

Dr. PUN Chiu On was a great teacher, excellent doctor and the most respected boss to me.
As a medical student, I loved the tutorial classes by Dr. PUN most. He was kind and patiently
taught us basic clinical skills in depth. I also loved to follow Dr. PUN’s clinical rounds. He would
discuss each patient’s presentation, management and ECG ndings with junior doctors and
nurses. Dr. PUN was very enthusiastic in teaching nurses ECG. He organized ECG course with the
Association of Hong Kong Nursing Sta. We sneaked in the ECG course after seeking Dr. PUN’s
approval. Dr. PUN designed an excellent course with interesting and easily understandable
explanation of the basic concept of ECG. The classes were interactive and with revision exercises
for ECG interpretation that kept all the audiences delightful. I later found out that most if not all
cardiac nurses had attended his ECG lectures. Some nurses said they enjoyed the lectures so
much that they had attended the course for several times. I still kept Dr. PUN’s lecture notes with
me and read it from time to time to refresh my ECG knowledge.
As a trainee, Dr. PUN was the best mentor and boss to me. He was very concerned about the
training for all of his juniors. He guided me and paved the career path for me. Dr. PUN knew that
I was not a good planner. He collected the forms of the Hong Kong Heart Foundation and
assisted me to apply for it. I was deeply touched in a conversation with him for choosing the
training center. Actually, I did not know about overseas training and even the subspecialty that
I should take. Dr. PUN advised me to have training in cardiac arrhythmia and
electrophysiological study because it suited my character. After knowing that my wife and my
baby daughter would go with me, Dr. PUN said “Well, then I will arrange an EP center in California
for you. It is warmer there and more suitable for your family. The North-eastern centers are too
cold for baby.” My family was very grateful about Dr. PUN’s arrangement and we had a wonderful
year of training in the Stanford University Medical Center.
I was shocked after hearing the bad news of Dr. PUN. I went to his clinic to meet Mrs. PUN where
I met many patients and relatives, waiting to oer their condolence to Mrs. PUN. They all said
that Dr. PUN was an excellent doctor and expressed their gratitude to thank Dr. PUN that took
good care of them for the past years. As a successor of Dr. PUN’s clinic, I heard stories about how
Dr. PUN dedication, commitment and sacrice for patients’ care from the patients themselves,
relatives and the clinic nurses over and over. They felt very sorry about Dr. PUN’s sudden pass
away. Many of them had concluded that Dr. PUN oered much for others and reserved too little
for himself.
Although Dr. PUN suddenly left us, his image of great teacher, excellent doctor and the best boss
always lives in my heart, and I hope I could continue his spirit to take care of patients and others.

From Friend
Setting up of a special grant for medical students in memory of Dr. PUN Chui On, a great doctor and an exemplary teacher
“A great doctor heals not by hands, but by hearts. A great teacher teaches not by words, but by
examples.”
Dr. PUN is an excellent example of a great doctor and an exemplary teacher. Dr. PUN treated his
every patient with his heart. I was lucky to have the chance to work in Queen Elizabeth Hospital
(QEH) and learnt from Dr. PUN when he was the Consultant Cardiologist. Many QEH medical unit
B colleagues, whom we aectionately called as MB brothers and sisters, still remember that Dr.
PUN would remind all newly joined team members to alert him to see his patients in person if
they were admitted to ward. His patients were marked with a tiny piece of blue coloured paper
on the outpatient folders whom we called them 潘爺之友. These patients were not close friends
and relatives of Dr. PUN, nor anybody holding important positions in the society. Many of them
were in labour and grassroot groups. Because they were Dr. PUN’s patients, they were all very
important people to him.
There were countless examples to tell you how Dr. PUN treated his patients with conscience and
passion. Here, I want to share with you a true story- around eight months ago (ie ve months
before Dr. PUN left us), while I was in the airport waiting for boarding to join a meeting in Europe,
I received a phone call from a relative who complained of sudden onset of palpitation. I
immediately thought of Dr. PUN and suggested him seeking medical attention at St. Teresa’s
Hospital. After I returned from Europe, my relative told me that Dr. PUN attended him in the ward
at 2am! My relative did not mention my name or my referral, but just told the sta that he would
like to seek Dr. PUN’s consultation. Indeed, my relative did not expect Dr. PUN to see an ordinary
patient in the middle of the night. With Dr. PUN’s seniority, I was really moved and impressed by
his diligence and committed eort to treat his every patient.

Dr. PUN was a humble scholar who always had the passion to crave for knowledge. When I was a
medical student, I still remember Dr. PUN reading journals when he was waiting in the lift lobby,
grasping every minute to learn. Just two days before his sudden collapse, Dr. PUN
enthusiastically talked about recent advances such as gut ora during our dinner gathering with
other old friends from QEH. It was really heart breaking to recall the vivid scene when he
reminded us that we had to keep this dinner gathering bi-annually no matter how busy we were.
The sad news that Dr. PUN left us so suddenly still hit us very hard. Dr. PUN had left behind
memories that will live in our hearts forever.Transforming our grief into motivation to
nurturegreat doctors like Dr. PUN, I discussed with Mrs. PUN regarding the setting up of a special
grant for medical students. The life of Dr. PUN would surely impose a positive impact on the lives
of future young doctors I sincerely invite your contribution and donation to
this special grant in memorial of this great doctor and exemplary teacher whom we will miss
forever.
