TRIAL HSC
Year 12 are presently completing their trial HSC examinations. Thank you to parents for your ongoing support – as we are aware this is a stressful time for students. Stress management for students is important in helping them finish the HSC journey. Please refer to the links below for some practical and useful tips in helping your child at this time:

BREAKING NEWS: MOCK TRIAL TEAM REACHES THE
KNOCKOUT ROUND!!
As readers of our newsletter would be aware, Year 11 Legal Studies students have been involved in the Mock Trial Competition, which is conducted by the Law Society of NSW and is a practical means of introducing students to the law and to increase understanding of the basis of our judicial system.
The first four rounds of the competition are run on a regional round robin-basis, and the rounds are held in each of the ten regions from February to late June.
The top 64 scoring teams across NSW and the ACT then compete on a knockout basis until two schools are left to meet for the Grand Final in early December. The winner of the State Grand Final is then eligible to compete in the International Mock Trial.
We are very proud to announce that Henry Kendall High School is one of the top 64 scoring teams across NSW and the ACT. We are the only public comprehensive High School from the Central Coast left in the competition and we are set to compete against Barker College on Thursday 13 August 2015.
A local lawyer acts as a Magistrate for the Trial and our team consists of; Cooper McKenzie and Ella Whelan as barristers, Jarrod Gibbs as solicitor, Laura Johnstone and Marli Geesing as witnesses and our Magistrates Clerk is yet to be announced. We wish them all the very best, and stay posted for results.

YEAR 12 ADVISER REPORT
As we move towards the end of this term we are looking to finalise details for our celebrations of the great achievements of our students completing Year 12. Year 12 will be publishing a Yearbook that celebrates the last 6 years at Henry Kendall High School. The cost will be $20 to purchase the Yearbook and some students are choosing to put the refund from their jackets towards this purchase. We do not arrange to have this paid before the end of this term.
We have a formal Graduation Ceremony the last week of Term 3 on Thursday 17 September. The Graduation will be held in the MPC at Henry Kendall High School. This is when students receive the major Year 12 Awards and their School Reports. This concludes the students’ classroom and school experiences. Classes are then over for students and all they have to complete are the HSC exams from Monday 12 October until Friday 7 November 2015. Students should have their own HSC timetable by now. The Year 12 Formal will be on the evening of Monday 16 November 2015. This will be held at the Ettalong Beach Club where we will have a sit down dinner for all of Year 12 and 3-4 guests, usually parents and caregivers and/or a friend. We are expecting about 200-250 guests and it becomes quite costly event for families, with tickets priced at approximately $70.00. We have found that apart from seeing your students looking fabulous, and enjoying a nice meal, the speeches and formalities become a repetition of the Graduation Ceremony and are not always relevant to Parents and Caregivers. We would like to propose that all family and friends come for the arrival of the Year 12 students and enjoy nibbles and drinks (non-alcoholic) on the outside balcony overlooking the water at Ettalong starting at about 5:30 – 6.00pm. All guests at this stage would pay a cost of approximately $15.00. Parents and caregivers could then leave to enjoy their own evening meal and pick up their Year 12 student at the conclusion of the formal function at approximately 10:00pm. Year 12 students could invite a friend into the formal function, but it would primarily be seen as a celebration of the completion of Year 12 for Year 12 students. The formal function usually consists of a meal, speeches and goodbyes, funny awards, thankyou’s and a DVD of some funny Year 12 photos and moments which will be available to collect if you wish. Further details regarding payment and ticketing will be advised after the HSC trial examinations. Mr David Ardley – Year Adviser
CONGRATULATIONS LAUREN RILEY

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN VET
All of our classes are continuing to work very well. Year 12 Retail had a visit from Central Coast Group Training (CCGT) last week and they discussed opportunities for Retail Apprenticeships in various retail organisations. All of the students found this to be a rewarding experience. Stage 5 Hospitality has been excelling at their Barista and customer skills and many staff has been enjoying a custom made espresso coffee over the past couple of weeks. Year 11 Hospitality have been very busy with their sandwich unit and have now mastered the many different styles of sandwiches available in cafes and restaurants.
We wish Year 12 the very best in their Trial Exams. After the Trial Exam is completed Year 12 students not requiring an ATAR are able to exit our courses. There is a process which students must follow for this to occur. Year 12 students must complete all competencies, assessment tasks and work placement hours to satisfy the requirements of their qualifications; they can check this by talking to their classroom teacher.
Students are unable to exit the course until this has been addressed. In addition to this all students must complete an exit survey, this provides our RTO (Recognised Training Organisation) with data which is then used to better meet the needs of our students in the format of tasks and delivery of content and practical experiences .This will be completed in class during Week 6.
There is now another requirement for all Vocational Educational students to complete. All students must now apply for a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number to be able to receive their credentials. This will be completed in class however, there is privacy form that needs to be completed by parents/caregivers. This will be sent home in the next fortnight and must be returned to Mrs McTeigue. All students studying a SVET or TVET course will need this number. Some TVET students have already completed this process at TAFE, if this is the case it is of the utmost importance that they see Mrs McTeigue so the number is recorded on our database which then has to be uploaded to our RTO, which is Macquarie Park. Students only require the one number. All students in Year 10 and Year 11 studying a Vocational Education course must also register for their USI number; this will be completed in class over the next two weeks. If you have any concerns or queries about this new requirement please do not hesitate to contact me.
Mrs Caroline McTeigue– Head Teacher VET

CAREERS REPORT
Year 12
Those students intending to apply for university, the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) book is now in the school. It is a user-friendly guide about everything you need to know about applying for university. With this in mind, I draw your attention to some very important points.
It is important to register on-time preferences by 30 September. After that, the processing costs increase substantially. So long as one preference is loaded, students can change their preferences for the main round up until midnight on the 6 January 2016. The front inside cover of the book has information on all the important dates.
Alternative entry paths to university also exist. The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is a pathway that students can use to gain entry to university. It is highly recommended that students apply for this as the admission rate is very high. The STAT test is another viable option for students to use which is addressed in chapter 8 of the UAC book. All these options have closing dates.
Another source of information is the Open Days which are held by the universities. Look up the relevant institution to find out when they are being held. Remember that every university has its own rules and I would encourage students and parents to contact them by phone or email to seek answers to various questions you might have. Ask for the Head of the School or Faculty or alternatively send your query via email.
Students leave early on Thursdays and I will be taking advantage of this time slot to invite guest speakers to talk to Year 12. On 20 August the University of Newcastle will be at the school. For all students, Central Coast Group Training will be at the school on 27 August to talk about the process of applying for apprenticeships and traineeships. These talks will commence at 12.45 pm.
Please contact me if you have any concerns.
Year 10
TAFE applications need to be submitted by the end of term. When studying TAFE as part of your school pattern, it is referred to as TVET. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to combine studies in two different institutions as part of their pattern of study for the HSC. A booklet is available at the Student Hub. Some courses allow for the calculation of an ATAR. Students need to be aware of the status of their respective courses.
Year 11
TAFE students need to re-apply for their courses in Year 12. Enrolment is not automatic. Forms are available in the Student Hub.

YEAR 9 ADVISER REPORT
I would like to firstly congratulate all of Year 9 on a successful first semester and welcome them back for what will be a busy yet rewarding Term 3. Electives Throughout semester one, Year 9 began to excel in their chosen electives. The Year 9 Photography class has produced some excellent landscape and nature photography, the Physical Activity and Sports Studies class created, filmed and analysed sporting set-plays using coaching analysis software and the Music class has developed their group performances and are preparing a class performance for the upcoming PAN night. All Year 9 students should have begun the process of choosing their 100 hour elective for 2016.
Photography Work by Alexa Hillard-Gardiner, Year 9
Photography Work by Laura Cooper, Year 9
Duke of Edinburgh A small group of Year 9 students have been working hard with the support Miss Brien and Mr Banks in preparation for the Duke of Edinburgh program. Congratulations on your efforts so far and good luck with the attainment of your personal goals. Youth Frontiers Youth Frontiers is an innovative and new leadership program being offered to Year 9 students for the first time this year. A small group of students have taken on the challenge and are currently working on their community based research projects. I would like to commend these students on this significant undertaking and wish them luck with the remainder of their project. PE Elective Snow Trip Good luck to the Year 9 students who have taken the opportunity to travel to Thredbo as part of the PASS elective Snow Trip. The students will experience one of Australia’s most unique landscapes and will have the opportunity to learn how to Snowboard or Ski with their peers.
Mr Michael Mellish - Year 9 Adviser
MAX POTENTIAL
We are in the final stages of what has
been another fantastic year of Max Potential in the Gosford RSL Club program. We are all looking forward to a tremendous Showcase event to celebrate and showcase our amazing young adults who have successfully completed the program in 2014. All are welcome to attend the Showcase event at the Gosford RSL Club on Wednesday 12 August 2015 from 3pm-5pm.
The young adults are finalising their community service projects and have enjoyed the experience greatly. All have really enjoyed the interaction with their dedicated Community Coach, who have helped them to identify and achieve their life goals.
We are very grateful for the contribution of our Community Coaches, for the purpose of growing personal leadership capability in our youth. Over 50% of these coaches are repeat coaches, which is not only a credit to the individuals, but also to the program.
Congratulations to Emilia Gibson of Year 11 who will soon complete the 2015 Max Potential programme. Below is her overview of the experience.
The Max Potential Experience by Emilia Gibson Upon beginning my journey with the Max Potential program I had my doubts about what the experience would be like. I had no preconceptions about what we would be asked to do except for the Community Service Project, so when it came to the introduction workshop of the program I was greatly relieved. Max Potential is, what the title proclaims it to be, about you attaining the highest position you can, achieving what you set out for. It's about challenging yourself, to test your abilities and see where you end up - if you have been able to achieve your goal, or if you've been led in a different, yet successful direction. Through this program I feel I have been able to pinpoint and establish many characteristics of myself, both negative and positive. Features I am now able to work on, which were standing in the way of me achieving what I'm striving for, now and in the future. My community service project that I am currently working on involves the topical issue of poverty and its impact on people around the world. It's something I feel passionate about, so much so that within the last month have decided to sponsor a child living in Africa. This ties into my project, which is aiming to involve my school and their contribution to a worthy cause that will significantly impact a child's life. My project also aims to bring awareness to poverty stricken countries and also bring attention to the differences between our lifestyle and opportunities in comparison to a child in a third world country. I personally feel that my involvement with Max Potential has been helpful to recognise my strengths and weaknesses and prove that with hard work, you can achieve anything you set out to do.
YEAR 8 ADVISER REPORT
I would like to start by congratulating Year 8 for an excellent turn out at the Course Selection Evening held on Wednesday 29 July 2015. It is clear that all students have thought seriously about their selections and have submitted their forms promptly. I was impressed with the quality of report comments that Year 8 received at the end of last semester, but I would also like to take this opportunity to remind all Year 8 students that it is important to take responsibility for your own learning, make sure you stay on task in the classroom and that you are completing all assessment tasks at home. Even if you have not been set a particular homework task for a course, you can always revise past work, create summary notes and complete any unfinished class work. If you are able to establish high expectations for your study in the early years of high school you will ensure that you set yourself up for success in the future. Keep up the great work Year 8! Miss Carly Brien – Year Adviser
YEAR 10 ADVISER REPORT
Wow! Week 4 already! Year 10 students should be aware that there are many assessment tasks due to be disseminated, or to be completed, soon. If any students are having issues understanding the task at hand, their classroom teacher should be their first port of call. In the past, there has been some misunderstanding as to the correct procedure when a task has been missed. If a student has missed a task due to illness or misadventure, they should:
Collect an ‘Illness and Misadventure Form’ from outside the Deputy, Mrs Wearne’s office.
Complete the form, filling in all necessary details.
Attach appropriate documentation such as a Medical Certificate or Statutory Declaration.
Hand the form to their classroom teacher.
This process must be completed as soon as the student returns to school. It is important that students understand the correct protocol, as their understanding of it is pertinent for their senior years. Many students have received a Year Award recently. The recipients are: Shalise Bailey, Jesse Baker, Kevin Gilmore, Tyler Gunn, Danielle Guyot, Ka Po Kan, Benjamin Kemsley, Alicia Kostalas, Rhys Mathieson, Jade McAtamney, Alec Miles, Caitlin Neelands, Nicholas Seabrook, Danielle Shepherd, Caitlin Waller and Byung Hyun Yun. Congratulations! I am also pleased to say that several Year 10 students have also received a Principal’s Award. Students need to have received three Year Awards to be awarded a Principal’s Award. The awardees are: Jessica Buth, Christian Doroszak, Tyler Gunn, Rhys Mathieson, Skye Rawlings, Sarah Robinson, Nicholas Seabrook, Danielle Shepherd and Colin Smith. Well done! Mr Blake Wawrzyk – Year 10 Adviser
HSIE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REPORT
On Wednesday 29 July, Ms Pamela Hogan and I ventured to the University of Newcastle, City Campus to attend lectures by world-renowned historian, Sir Richard Evans. Sir Richard Evans is considered one of the pre-eminent authorities on Nazi Germany, and his Third Reich trilogy is regarded as the definitive account of Hitler’s reign. He was also the key expert witness in the high profile Irving v Lipstadt libel trial, where he successfully defended Lipstadt. Professor Evans delivered two lectures, ‘Why did democracy collapse in Germany in 1933?’ and ‘To what extent was the Third Reich a dictatorship by consent?’. Both of these lectures were directly applicable to the HSC
Modern History course and the audience was kept enthralled by Professor Evans’ comprehensive knowledge of the time period. The enthusiastic audience treated Sir Evans as somewhat of a Modern History rock star. Preliminary Modern History students here at Henry Kendall will benefit from the detailed information and understanding gained from these lectures. Paul Kiem, President of the History Teachers’ Association of NSW, also delivered an informative lecture entitled ‘HSC Essay Writing’. This interesting lecture will prove beneficial to our students as they approach the beginning of their HSC. Mr Blake Wawrzyk

Hello,
Many students start their first job (and lodge their first tax return) while still studying. You can help your students by letting them know the easiest way to lodge this tax time.
