QXF Conductor/Cable Internal Review

Thank You

• First of all, let me thank everybody for accepting an extended work time and have this meeting over video due to the difficult circumstances affecting the US Laboratories Employees

• We acknowledge that a remote video-meeting is less than ideal, but the goal is to use this event to make further progress in our plans for QXF Conductor and Cable definition to the best of our abilities.

Overall Goals• Internal vs. External Review– This is an Internal (Conductor and Cable) Review

• Monitoring the consonance of the collaboration, expected to speak with one voice (although not necessarily with one plan)

• Well tuned chorus would be the best outcome of this Review. No Cacophony.

• No “external” contribution: 11 T, FRESCA, etc.– Appropriate lessons and experiences should have been learned,

digested and included in final plans by HL-LHC group.

– External Review • Endorsement of “well-tuned chorus”

– Good for funding agencies interactions

• Help Leadership to make decision on controversial issues. might be called to confirm plans or suggest to Management viable alternatives

Overall Goals (cont)

• Additional Reviews coming up– X-section and Coil Review (?? Feb ’14 ??)– Quench Protection Review (?? Apr. ’14 ??)– Short and Long Mechanical Structure Reviews ( ??

May-Jun ’14 ??– ?? He Vessel and Interfaces with Cryostat ??

(2015)• By 2015, QXF magnets are 80% Construction

and 20% Development (and 0% Research)

General Charges• QXF magnets for the upgraded LHC IRs will need to be installed

in 2022. Production of the magnets is likely to take place in the 2017-2021 period. – The last prototype/pre-productions long quadrupole (LQXF02 and

LQXF03) are likely to start coils production in 2016. – In order for LQXF02 and LQXF03 to achieve a reduction of the

technical and cost risk for the project, they must use conductor and cable that is identical to what will go in the production magnets.

• Convergence on the conductor and cables specifications by early 2014 mandatory so that small procurements - for prototypes - can proceed in earnest and large conductor procurement (for production) can be placed in 2015 at the latest.

• Concentrate on SQXF02 and SQXF03 and on long Prototypes (LQXF01 to 03). SQXF01 is not part of this Review

Charges for Strand• Describe and define parameters space for both RRP and PIT conductor

solutions:– Stacking: PIT and RRP Present Default: 169– Critical Current– Copper Fraction– RRR– Stress Sensitivity– Strand Diameter Present Default: 0.85 mm

• Describe present experience within HL-LHC and lessons learned (by HL-LHC participants) from other activities around the world.

• Describe procurement and measurements being planned between now and mid-2014 on default and “alternatives to default” parameters

• Describe safety margins with present parameter choices.• Provide plan for strand procurement and usage in future SQXF and LQXF coils.• Present Plans for LARP/CERN SQXF02 and SQXF03• Present Plans for LARP/CERN LQXF01, 02 and 03• Allow, in the schedule, sufficient time to discuss the elements described above

and any other strand/cable related issue that may affect the success of the final product.

Charges for Cable• QXF cable is wider and has higher aspect ratio than previous LARP cables. • Describe and define parameters space with extrapolation elements from

present LARP experience:– Width and Thickness– Keystone angle– Core Size/Location– Insulation Braiding– Winding Stability

• Describe present experience within HL-LHC and lessons learned (by HL-LHC participants) from other activities around the world.

• Describe procurement and measurements planned between now and mid-2014 on default and “alternatives to default” parameters

• Describe safety margins with present parameter choices.• Provide plans for cable procurement and usage in future SQXF and LQXF coils.

– Present Plans for LARP SQXF02 and SQXF03– Present Plans for LARP QXF01, 02 and 03

• Allow, in the schedule, sufficient time to discuss the elements described above and any other strand/cable related issue that may affect the success of the final product.

Agenda• Thanks to Amalia, Arup, Dan and Bernardo for the final agenda

definition• Communication by Video is hard ! Please stay on time and remain

efficient.

Conclusions/Future Plans

• Follow-up meeting and conclusions, edited by the AA team (Amalia and Arup) sent to Lucio and Giorgio by end of October.
