Migraine is a medical condition. Most people
who suffer from migraines get headaches that
can be quite severe. A migraine headache is
usually an intense, throbbing pain on one,
or sometimes both, sides of the head. Most
people with migraine headache feel the pain in
the temples or behind one eye or ear, althoughany part of the head can be involved.
Besides pain, migraine also can cause nausea
and vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound.
Some people also may see spots or flashing
lights or have a temporary loss of vision.
Migraine can occur any time of the day,
though it often starts in the morning. The pain
can last a few hours or up to one or two days.
Some people get migraines once or twice a
week; others, only once or twice a year. Most
of the time, migraines are not a threat to
overall health. But migraine attacks can
fere with your day-to-day life.
If you suffer from headaches and are
cerned that you may be having migra
see your doctor for a diagnosis and to ditreatment options.

Happy July 4!Celebrate with Fireworks Safety in Mind
Its always the safe bet to attend a community
fireworks display and let the pros handle the
lighting. Fireworks can cause serious burns and
eye injuries. If you do use fireworks, follow these
safety tips.
Make sure fireworks are legal in your areabefore buying or using them.
Never allow young children to play with or
ignite fireworks.
Always have an adult supervise fireworks
activities, including sparklers. Sparklers burn
at temperatures of about 2000 degrees hot
enough to melt some metals.
Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that
have not ignited fully.
Never point or throw fireworks at anothe
person.
Keep a bucket of water or a garden hos
handy in case of fire or other mishap.
Light fireworks one at a time, then move bacquickly.
After fireworks complete their burning, dous
the spent device with plenty of water from
bucket or hose before discarding it to preven
a trash fire.

SENIOR CARE
DID YOU KNOW?
If your parents are getting older and have begun to developchronic medical problems, its a good idea to form a rela-tionship with their doctor. By accompanying your parentsto their medical appointments, you can act as a healthadvocate on their behalf. (Remember, privacy laws requirethat you receive your parents permission to talk to theirdoctor.)
Find out more about your parents health. If they havehigh cholesterol, diabetes or high blood pressure, findout how high their levels are and what targets theyshould be aiming for. Ask your parents doctor toexplain why theyre taking a particular medication, how it works, how it should be taken, and so on.
Ask questions Should your parents try to lose weight?Learn stress-management techniques? Get regular flu
shots? What kinds of changes should you report to thedoctor right away? How would their doctors prefer tohear from you by phone or email? And what specificsymptoms warrant a call to 911? Be sure to give thedoctor your contact information, too.

Whether youre gathered at home, at a book-club
meeting, a birthday celebration or a girls night out,
make healthy choices in what you eat and
drink. Keep the conversation going and
the food rich in fruits and vegetables.
Eat less junk food and foods high incalories, saturated fat, or added sugars
or salt. (OK, if its a birthday party, enjoy
a small piece of cake.) Choose drinks with
no calories, such as water, sparkling water or
unsweetened iced tea. You can enjoy your friends

Many older adults are afraid of falling. This
ear becomes more common as people age,
ven among those who havent fallen. It may
lead older people to avoid activities such as
walking, shopping or taking part in social
activities.
