Atotalof278examplesofthislocomotivewerebuilt.TheGP50retainsthesameoveralllengthof59feet2inchesastheotherGPdash-2serieslocomotivesbuiltinthesameera.ItutilizedGM’sD87tractionmotorenablingittoproduceacontinuoustractiveeffortof62,400poundsand65,000poundscontinuous.

ThemostsignificantdifferenceintheGP50fromearlierdesignsliketheGP40wasupgradedcomponents(likeaturbochargersilencerandnewtypeofblowerhousing)andincreasedhorsepower.Thelocomotivealsointroducedanew“anti-wheel-slip”technologywherethelocomotivehorsepoweroutputwasreducedifawheelslipconditionwasintroduced.Italsoincludedfeaturesalreadycommononearliermodelssuchasdynamicbraking(asystemfortemporarilyemployingtractionmotorsasgeneratorsandusingtheresultingelectromotiveforcetoslowthetrain),andanairtighthoodthatkeptoutdust,dirtandotherparticlesfromreachinginternalcomponents.
