SAVE OUR STRAYS OF HUNTINGTON BEACH Stray News Issue #50 Fall 2013 SOSHB is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of lost and stray pets of Huntington Beach. THE GIFT OF GIVING For most of us, joining a 5k walk is something we do for our health and also to raise money to help donate to a specific charity. Save Our Strays member, Anna Monaco- Beach did just that! Recently Anna participated in a 5K Walk hosted by The Employees Community Fund (ECF) of The Boeing Company. ECF is a unique employee giving program that allows employees to support the needs of their local communities via tax-deductible, recurring payroll deductions or one-time gifts. Hundreds of employees participated in the walk and were entered into an opportunity drawing to receive a special one-time gift donation of $1000 to be given to the charity of their choice. Anna’s name, along with a few others was selected and Anna immediately identified Save Our Strays of Huntington Beach as the recipient charity! Anna along with husband Hank and son Taylor have been supporters of S.O.S. for several years and are happy to be able to make this contribution. Volunteers are an integral part of any organization, especially those that are comprised solely of those donating their time and efforts. S.O.S. is grateful to all the goodness shared by the many volunteers that make the world a better place for our furry friends. As we approach the holidays, it is a good time to reflect upon how much we have, to be appreciative for all the goodness in our lives and to remember those who are less fortunate. So if you are looking for a way to make a difference, to make this winter a little easier for a furry friend, think of the good work done by S.O.S. We welcome any and all monetary donations – every little bit counts and can make the world a brighter, warmer place for a furry friend in need. HO! HO! HO! Tis the season to be jolly - tis also the season to be sensitive to the impact the busy season can bring to you and your pets. The hustle and bustle of the holiday can whisk us away as we take time to meet with friends, shop, and make special trips for those special gifts. It is very possible that your daily routines will be altered and new activities such as baking, gift wrapping and hosting or attending parties may occur. These changes are usually welcome changes to you. Your pets may have a very different perspective as their routines get altered. So help your fury friends relax and enjoy the holidays and consider these tips to make the season bright: • Pets that prefer less social activity can get stressed when their environment gets busy, so provide a quiet, calm place for them to relax. Provide food and water and access to allow your pet to relieve themselves. • Guests have good intentions but may be unfamiliar with your home and pet expectations. Be sure to request that guests refrain from feeding treats to your pets. Alcohol, fatty foods and chocolate can be very harmful or toxic to your pet. • If you have a non-smoking home asks your guests to respect that decision. Nicotine can be highly toxic to your pets. • Avoid potential loss. Guests and visitors may not be familiar with exit opportunities for your pets. If your pet is allowed to mingle with the guests you could feed your pet prior to guest arrival so your pet will be less hungry. Be sure to keep a close eye on them to ensure they don’t accidently slip out the door. It is very important to ensure your pets are wearing current identification tags in the event they do wander out of the home. The energy and excitement of celebration is nearing. Be sure to take a few precautions and make a few adjustments to ensure you and your pets can enjoy this wonderful time.

Think food – Think Pet food & feeding!from the Center for Veterinary Medicine

You may think of your dogs or cats as family members, but do you handle their food and feeding utensils the same way you handle your own? You should! You wouldn’t eat off the same plate or drink our of the same glass, day after day, without washing them between meals. So it stands to reason you shouldn’t neglect to wash your pet’s food bowls between meals every day and the water bowl every day or two.

Dogs and cats (just like people) have bacterial microbes in their mouths and these microbes can be transferred to dishes the pet eats and drinks from. Food left in the dishes can provide the microbes with a good environment for multiplying (moisture, oxygen and nutrients)

and can produce illness in people who touch the dish, or the pet, that eats or drinks from the dish.

The same good hygiene practices that apply to handling and storing food for people also apply to food for pets. Leftovers should be stored in a closed container and refrigerated if the food is moist.

To be safe, remember to wash your hands in warm, soapy water after touching pet food and feeding dishes. And wash and dry your pet’s dishes and storage containers before refilling

them with new food. Both you and your pet will be safer if you do.

Save Our Strays’ 13th Annual “Pancake Breakfast in the Park” was a great success. The event was held Saturday, September 21st at Lake Park in Huntington Beach. We raised over $3000 for our cause!

We served breakfast to over 200 guests and their four-legged companions. Our guests enjoyed pancakes, garden burgers, sausage, fruit, bagels, muffins, croissants, orange juice, bottled water and Starbucks coffee.

Mayor Connie Boardman and Councilmember Joe Shaw stopped by to enjoy breakfast and the festivities. Councilmember Joe Shaw made a commitment to the crowd that for the next year he will be focusing on possible sites for a Huntington Beach shelter.

The opportunity drawing was once again the hit of the event. Our vendors shared their merchandise and information with attendees: Avon Rep-Jean Battaglia, California Greyhound Adoption Promotion, Dognabbit, Finding Rover, German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County, Getaway Pet Care, Green Girl Maid Service, Just Food for Dogs, Kahoots Pet Store, Kat’s Kreations, Laura’s Natural Images, Origami Owl Custom Jewelry, Pawsitively For Dogs, Pet Supply, Second Chance Pet Adoptions and The Lily Sanctuary.

Plenty of wags and purrs go out to our attendees, sponsors and vendors. Most of all, an extra special thank you to our volunteers who worked SO hard to bring it all together: Vina Abi-Fadel, Lien, Andy, Liann and Chris Acevado, Hank, Anna and Taylor Beach, Will and Desiree Beaver, David and Anthony Berardi, Karen Chepeka, Leslie, Rich and Madison Correia, Linda and Randy Crossley, Loretta Fleming, Susan Hattabaugh, Ann Kennedy, Lee Love, Evelyn Oynebraaten, Heather Rogers, Barbara Schmitzer, Elizabeth Takeuchi and Abbi Webster.

A sincere thanks to all our sponsors: Andrew’s Square Pet Clinic, Angel’s Baseball, Animalia, Aquarium of the Pacific, Armstrong Garden Centers, Avon, Beach Blvd Pet Hospital, Beach Street Boutique, Beef Palace, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Captain Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Safari, Consignment Attic, Desimone Deli & Bakery, Diggity Dawg, Dognabitt.com, Dog’s Day Out, Duke’s Restaurant, Einstein Bagels, Finding Rover, German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County, Gimme Shelter Pets, Green Girl Maid Service, Huntington Beach Playhouse, Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach, Just Food For Dogs, K1 Speedway, Kahoots Pet Store, Kat’s Kreations, Laura’s Natural Images, Lazy Dog Café, Lisa Venzke, Mario’s Mexican Restaurant, Mayer Music, New Century Tires, Origami Owl Custom Jewelry, Pawsitively for Dogs, Pet Supply, Rockin Crepes, Rockin Ice, Salon Shanti, Sandy’s Restaurant, Second Chance Pet Adoptions, Smart & Final, South Coast Repertory, Starbucks Coffee, Sugar Shack, The Laguna Playhouse, Tiffy’s Restaurant, The Funnel House, The Lily Sanctuary, Trader Joe’s and Wyland Worldwide.
