This car is typical of the “industry standard”tanker. They were used for decades to haul crudeoil, often in long tanker trains-”the pipeline acrossAmerica” in the age before Supertankers.

Produced to the USRA basic design, variations ofthis car were made by a number of carbuilders.This kit features the 54” dome with optional man-hole covers and molded end handrails.

Some are still in non revenue service.

Wheel CarEra 1930 to Present

For many years, one of the most “awe-inspiring” sights in railroading was the milelong “reefer block”. It was pulled by the most powerful locomotives in history,rushing fresh produce across America in a bright ribbon of color. This kit buildsthe R-40 as operated by the SP/UP and WP railroads. These cars were rebuilt during thelate 30’s through the 40’s fromUSRA single sheath boxcarsthrough the use of standard sideassemblies supplied by the Young-stown Company. Includes bothribbed and non-ribbed extendedends. AB brake gear is included.

These all steel hoppers were themost enduring of all the USRA de-signs. 22,000 were built for 23 rail-roads. In addition, the basic designwas adopted as standard by the ARAin 1922. Cars remained in servicethrough at least 1972.

Built under the mandate of theUSRA, these composite (wood/steel) cars were rugged, versa-tile and popular. 25,000 were builtby over a dozen carbuilders formore than twenty railroads, over-lapping well into the “steel” age.Some were in non-revenue ser-vice as late as 1965.

When USRA hoppers became due for re-building in the 30’s and 40’s, many roadselected to replace the flat sides with panelsides, resulting in a capacity increase of80 cu. ft.

The “D” version includes a decal coveringthe C&O, D&H, Wabash and New Haven. In-cludes both K and AB brake systems.

The Georgia RR and several other rail-roads chose to upgrade their USRASS cars with steel plates welded tothe inside of the bracing in place ofthe original wood. This was a quickand inexpensive method of obtainingan all steel car. It did not increase theinterior capacity as much as theYoungstown sides and ends. ABbrakes are included. “D” versions in-clude a Georgia RR decal.

This car is represenative of a series of 114cars (#’s 131 to 244) acquired by TheAndersons Company in 1961 and used ingrain transport. Since grain was lighter thancoal, the sides were extended to increasethe cubic capacity. A canvas cover protectedthe grain. A cast resin top and custom decalare included. These cars were painted sil-ver and based in Maumee, Ohio. The last oneswere retired in 1983.

In 1934, the D&H converted 30 SS USRAboxcars to carry bulk cement with theaddition of roof hatches, wine dischargegates and interior slope sheets. They werein the # series 17001 - 17500. The B&Oalso converted 40 cars numbered from287000 - 287039. After 1960, these carswere used in company sand service withthe D&H operating at least one into 1985.“D” versions include a D&H decal, seedecal section for B&O decals.

In 1921, the Canadian Pacific RR built a fleetof 3500 SS USRA copies. They were identi-cal with the USRA standard except for theuse of 7/8 ends instead of the 5/5/5 end. Asbuilt, they had grain unloading hoppers un-der the doors, but these quickly disapeared.This kit represents the post 1940 versionwith no grain doors, AB brakes, 7/8 endsand Bettendorf trucks. A CP decal is in-cluded.

In 1917, 1000 40 foot, 40-ton steel frameflat cars were built for the ACL RR to a stan-dard design with 10 stake pockets. (4021is the later 50 ton design with 11 stake pock-ets) Similiar cars were built for most RR’s.Many were converted to low side gondolasby the addition of stakes and planking. Youcan build the kit as either a flat or the gon-dola. “D” versions include an ACL decal.

Both the ACL and the SCL converted pulp-wood cars into stump cars. These wereused used to haul stumps from loggingoperations to chemical plants that ex-tracted chemicals from the pine tar inthem. The conversion was done simplyby using steel plates with a pair of anglesreinforcing the top edge and channels forvertical support. The gap between theplates and the deck allowed debris to beswept out easily. “D” versions contain aSCL decal.

These cars were built during WWII and weredesigned to use a minimum amount of steeldue to wartime shortages. They remainedin revenue service through the 70’s and re-main in mw service today. They were ownedby the PRR, NYC, C&O, N&W, SANTA FE, IHB,MC, CNJ, LV and the READING among oth-ers. They were primarily used as mill gonsto transport structual steel and other largeand bulky items. Eventually, most had theirwood sides replaced with steel plate. “D”versions contain a decal for N&W, PRR, NYCATSF and ROCK ISLAND.

These cars were used to carry pulpwood(small diameter logs of no other commer-cial value that were used to make paper).They were converted from old flatcars bythe addition of a steel deck sloped to thecenter and bulkhead ends. They were usedby the ACL, SEABOARD, SOUTHERN andmany other roads that had logging opera-tions in their service area. “D” versionscontain an ACL decal.

OUR PHILOSOPHYWe bring together the best of two worlds, combining the fun and reward of fine

modelbuilding with the rapidly growing interest in prototype railroading, freight cars andstructures in particular. The preservation of history in miniature.

ABOUT OUR KITSWe’re concerned about the details - and not only prototype details. We design and

manufacture our kits and parts to the highest possible standards. Our parts are designedto fit together and if they don’t we remake the tooling before we release the kit. Molded in alight grey, easy to paint styrene (that reflects light, making even the smallest part easy tosee) parts are crisp and virtually flash free. Spares are usually provided for those smallerparts that might get lost or damaged during assembly. Preformed grabirons made fromphosphor bronze wire are included where applicable.

Illustrated step-by-step instructions are included. These include prototype historyand a painting guide. To avoid confusion, each part is identified by its correct name, and iskeyed to the instructions by a number engraved on the “runner” or by a printed layout.

Only minimal tools are required; modelers knife, small file, precision tweezers, and asmall brush to apply liquid cement. Additionally, you will need either aerosol paint or aninexpensive airbrush.
