Who Should AttendThis program is designed for orthopedic nurses, peri-operative staff and

clinicians working in the orthopedic setting interested in learning more about

topics related to musculoskeletal issues.

Continuing Education HoursThis program has been provided by the Orange County Chapter of the National

Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON) which is approved by the California

Board of Registered Nursing with provider number CEP5753 for nine and one

tenth (9.1) contact hours for RNs. The Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board

has designated this continuing education activity for 9.1 Category A contact

hours toward recertification. Participants must stay for the entire program

to receive continuing education hours. No partial hours will be awarded for

this event.

Educational Objectives By the completion of the course, the participant should be able to:

Differentiate between a total knee replacement and a partial knee replacement surgery.

Identify an indication for a partial knee replacement versus a total knee replacement surgery.

State 2 common orthopedic sports injuries in adolescents.

Describe the clinical manifestations of the musculoskeletal system related to a patient with a spinal cord injury (SCI).

List common nursing diagnoses, interventions, and expected outcomes for musculoskeletal complications that may occur following a spinal cord injury.

Discuss how nutrition can attenuate catabolism while preserving the process of the surgical stress response in orthopedic surgical patients.

List one source of perioperative nutrition that includes carbohydrate loading with clear liquid and protein supplement that may benefit the orthopedic surgical patient.

Identify 2 conservative, non-operative treatments for spinal musculoskeletal issues.

Explain 3 restrictions a post-operative lumbar spine surgical patient may have to follow after surgery.

Identify the components of a standardized total body pre-operative decontamination process, and review the steps of implementation.

Discuss the elements of patient and staff education about the purpose and process of total body pre-operative decontamination.

Compare and contrast home physical therapy to outpatient physical therapy for post-operative orthopedic patients.
