14 HOBART AND WILLIAM SMITH COLLEGES

Dear Families and Alums,

Homecoming and Family Weekend – a fall tradition on the Hobart and William Smith campus – is a time of great celebration and engagement, and I invite you to join us Friday, September 26 – Sunday, September 28.

Each year, faculty members offer interesting classes on areas of study that are both timely and timeless, and students present findings from their impressive research projects. Families and alums gather to cheer on Statesmen and Heron teams, entrants in Fall Nationals and students in the annual talent show.

And this year on Saturday morning, we will welcome national radio personalities Neal Conan and Ken Rudin for a live presentation of the “Political Junkie Road Show.” Homecoming and Family Weekend is the perfect time to connect with family and friends and reconnect with the Hobart and William Smith and Geneva communities. We look forward to welcoming you to campus as we celebrate “coming home.”

SATURDAY | 9.27 9:45 – 10:45 a.m.

• Michael Tinkler – Associate Professor, Art and Architecture “Who Owns Art? Looting, Collecting & Cultural Property” Remember Indiana Jones carefully pouring sand out of a sack until

he could safely – he thought – snatch the golden idol? What’s the difference between Herman Goering’s collection policy and the Getty Museum’s? Should the British Museum return the Elgin Marbles? We will talk about art and who owns it – and for how long.

• Iva Deutchman – Professor, Political Science “Who’s In and Who’s Out – The 2014 Midterm Elections” Of course, everyone is already talking about the 2016 presidential

election (get used to saying President Clinton again!). But before we hit 2016, we have the 2014 midterms to get through. Currently, the insider television and radio talkers and bloggers are chatting about a slight Republican edge (two or three points), but it is months before November, and no one really knows. The big question, of course, is will the Republicans be able to take back the Senate, which will mean no legislation will get passed in the next two years?! Questions, questions! We will discuss all of this and also the larger question: Given Congress’ approval rating (about 12%), why do people keep re-electing their Congress person?

• Marilyn Jimenez – Chair, Media and Society Program; Associate Professor of Africana Studies

“Beyond the Ken Burns Effect: Animating a Still” In this session, participants will bring to life a still photo of their

choice using Adobe Systems’ After Effects. These techniques go beyond the well-known Ken Burns effect included in iMovie. We will also briefly cover the narrative purposes and aesthetic choices in animating stills.

• Laurence Erussard – Professor, English “Arthur – the Once and Future King” Let’s try to answer some questions about the development of stories

concerning Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. How did the hypothetical historical and legendary figure of Arthur and his fictitious knights come to inspire so many stories? Why do Arthurian myths continue to flourish in literature and films today? Let’s follow Arthur, Guinevere and the Knights of the Round Table from the 6th century and the medieval mists of Tintagel through their Romantic revival and to the edge of the 21st century. Our main focus will be the exploration of the emergence and the development of the legends

of King Arthur and their relationship to the imaginative literature and the glorious chivalric mentality of the Middle Ages. The texts and their textual characteristics will be observed within their historical and socio-cultural contexts.

• Sarah Greenleaf – Associate Librarian and Technical Services Librarian

“Family History Storytelling Using Primary Sources” Family history and genealogy is an increasingly popular pastime as

depicted in television programs such as “Who Do You Think You Are?” and “Faces of America.” But the lives of our ancestors are more than a mere compilation of facts. In this session, we will examine freely available genealogical and family history documents and look beyond the factual data in an attempt to glean a more complete picture of our ancestors’ lives and the world in which they lived. Designed to be hands-on, participants will have the opportunity to share their research experiences with others, if desired.

• John Marks – Curator, Geneva Historical Society; Adjunct Instructor, History

“HWS Folk Fest, 1976 – 2001” For 26 years, Folk Fest brought HWS and Geneva together on the

Quad every May. A casualty of changing to the semester system, Folk Fest lives on in memory. Whether you were a festival organizer or are new to HWS, come see and hear the history of the event and find out about the current folk scene on campus.

• Jamie Bodenlos – Assistant Professor, Psychology “Coping with Stress – A Mindfulness Approach” Stress is a normal part of our lives. When stress becomes excessive,

it can have negative effects on both physical and mental health. In this session, we will review theoretical perspectives on how stress affects health, what mindfulness is, and how different mindfulness techniques can help you manage stress.

• Les Friedman – Professor, Media & Society “Bite Me: The Enduring Legacy of Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’” “Jaws” became the first movie to crack the $100 million mark

and spawned a merchandizing frenzy; its box office success changed the way studios marketed and distributed their products, and it jumpstarted the summer movie phenomenon. But, why did Spielberg’s big fish story capture the imagination of the American public in 1975, and why does it continue to engage audiences in the 21st century? This class will explore the “Jaws” saga from multiple perspectives, including interpretations, production background, major themes, visual highlights, and the film’s place in American cinema history. Scenes will be shown to illustrate those ideas.

• James E. Sutton – Assistant Professor, Anthropology and Sociology

Stephen Cope – Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature

“Prison Education and the HWS Second Chances Program” This class provides an introduction to the HWS Second Chances

Prison Education Program. In 2012, Hobart and William Smith Colleges launched the Second Chances Program at the Five Points Correctional Facility. The first two years have been successful by all accounts, and the program is now poised to expand as it embarks on its third year. Overviews of current imprisonment and reoffending patterns, as well as issues and challenges that pertain to prison education will be provided, and participants will ultimately gain deeper insight into the benefits of delivering higher education behind bars.

• Rob Carson – Associate Professor, English “De-Facing Shakespeare” Does it matter what Shakespeare looked like? Does anything change

when we put a new face on him? The discovery of a “new” portrait of Shakespeare from a few years ago gives us an opportunity to assess the strange status that Shakespeare holds in our culture and to explore what is at stake when we set out to redefine a cultural icon.

• Jo Beth Mertens – Associate Professor, Economics “The Economics of Baseball” Are those players really overpaid? Without the anti-trust exemption

the game would die, right? And don’t forget the effects of stadiums on local economic development… . Forget about those dry economics lectures, learn about the effects of monopoly and market power, politics and public policy, by examining America’s pastime—Baseball!

• Charlie Temple – Professor, Education “Developing Books for Children in Africa” This session will describe work with authors, illustrators and

publishers in East and West Africa who are creating books for children. In affiliation with CODE of Canada, a literacy group, we have produced dozens of titles that have been distributed by the tens of thousands to children in the public schools of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. The session will include some writing exercises, so you can try your hand at creating a book manuscript for children.

• Susan Pliner – Director, Centennial Center for Leadership; Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Amy Forbes – Associate Director, Centennial Center for Leadership

“The Power of an Idea: Entrepreneurial Leadership” Entrepreneurs are drivers of innovation. Leaders are the primary force

behind change. Together, they can offer powerful solutions to the complex challenges found in today’s world. Contemporary leaders across all professions must navigate tumultuous environments where change is rapid, discontinuous and unpredictable. Innovation, creativity and an ability to add value by solving problems are necessary. The Centennial Center for Leadership believes in the capacity of a liberal arts education to provide that training. Join us for a workshop where we will discuss entrepreneurial leadership and the ways in which professionals can leverage core tenets from the liberal arts, such as problem-solving, intellectual ingenuity and calculated risk-taking.

PARKING

In April 2014, we celebrated the groundbreaking for the Performing Arts Center that is being built across the street from the Scandling Campus Center. Having raised more than $28 million for the project – the single largest capital effort in the Colleges’ history – we now look forward to the completion of the facility that will grace the campus and provide a single location for academics in the performing arts including dance, music and theatre, as well as space for film studies. We expect to dedicate the Center in early 2016, and you can follow the progress at www.hwsperformingarts.org.

As we welcome alumni, alumnae, parents and friends to campus for Homecoming and Family Weekend in September, we do so under construction, which will affect some parking as well as navigation around campus.

As the map on the right indicates, the Medbery parking lot is the location of the current construction, but just north is a new parking lot that is accessible from Pulteney Street from the north from Hamilton Street (Routes 5 & 20). Similarly, parking has been expanded north of the Scandling Campus Center, and it is accessible from Pulteney Street from the north from Hamilton Street (Routes 5 & 20). Beyond the entrances to these parking areas, Pulteney Street is closed to the south until the intersection of St. Clair Street.

Please note: There is still access to the Office of Campus Safety from Pulteney Street.
