The Statesmen evened the series last year with a 30-0 triumph on Boswell Field. GOOSE EGG: The Hobart defense pitched a shutout last season against RPI as the Statesmen picked up a 30-0 Liberty League win at home. It was the first shutout for Hobart since Sept. 1, 2012 (31-0 vs. Dickinson). It was the 171st all-time shutout by the Statesmen. The Engineers managed just two trips inside the red zone and came away empty handed both times. RPI missed a 43-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter and late in the fourth quarter, the Engineers turned the ball over on downs. BOTTLED UP: The RPI offense came into the 2017 game averaging 384.8 yards per game, but man- aged just 227 yards against Hobart. The Engineers’ longest play from scrimmage was a 16-yard comple- tion. It was the first time since Sept. 7, 2013, that the Statesmen defense didn’t allow a play of 20-plus yards (at Dickinson). ZACKARY ROBAK ’18 led the charge with a team-high seven tackles, including a sack, and earned a spot on the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll. WHERE THE POINTS CAME FROM: While the defense was posting its best performance of the 2017 season, Hobart’s scoring centered on the play of quarterback SHANE SWEENEY ’18 and kicker KYLE HACKETT. Sweeney completed 29 passes for 297 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Hackett tied a then Hobart record with a 12-point game. He converted field goals from 21, 30 and 39 yards and booted three PATs. THE MAGIC NUMBER: It seems 30 is the magic number for Hobart against RPI. The Statesmen are 17-1 all-time against the Engineers when they score 30 or more points. 30 or more points against the Statesmen.

POLL POSITION: RPI is the second nationally-ranked opponent on Hobart’s schedule this season. The Statesmen lost at then No. 6 Brockport to open the season. Since the start of the 2010 season, Ho-bart is 4-8 against nationally-ranked teams and just 1-5 when facing a ranked foe on the road. The last time the Statesmen beat a ranked team was in 2016, when the Purple and Orange went to No. 16/No. 13 St. Lawrence and left Canton with a 34-18 win.

ALUMNI BOWL: Hobart Head Coach KEVIN DeWALL ’00 is 2-0 this season against team with Hobart alumni leading them. He and the Statesmen prevailed 56-48 over SCOTT YODER ’01 and his Shenandoah Hornets and posted a 52-7 win last week over CHAD MARTINOVICH ’95 and his Rochester Yellowjackets.

THIRD TIME’S A CHARM: Sophomore kicker KYLE HACKETT picked up his third Liberty League Special Teams Performer of the Week award following his 10-point effort against Rochester. He convert-ed all seven of his PAT attempts and added a 40-yard field goal against the Yellowjackets. A Hobart kicker has scored 10 or more points in a game 13 times with Hackett accounting for six of them, including a single game record 13 against Morrisville this season.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Sophomore kicker KYLE HACKETT is in striking distance of more than one Hobart record entering today’s game. He is currently third on the Statesmen’s career field goals made list with 17, two away from the record shared by ERIC AMPUJA ’05 and SHAWN FAZIO ’81. Hackett has kicked two or more field goals in a game five times during his career, in-cluding a three field goal performance against RPI last season. He has also quietly closed in on the Hobart record for most consecutive PATs made. Hackett made his final 11 PAT attempts last sea-son and is 28-for-28 this year, giving him 39 in a row. The Hobart record is 41 set by CONOR CALLAHAN ’12. Ampuja is second on the list at 40.

ROOKIE REWARDS: First-year running back DANTE KIMBROUGH became the first Statesman this season to earn the Liberty League Rookie of the Week Award. He rushed for a season-high 62 yards on a season-high 12 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns, averaging 5.2 yards per carry against the Yellowjackets. Both of his TD runs came in the second quarter, the first from 1-yard out and the second from 9 yards. Kimbrough is tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns (3) and third in rushing yards (110) this season.

PREMIER PUNTER: Junior JOHN DelliSANTI is excelling in his first season as Hobart’s punter. He’s averaging 41.1 yards per punt, an average that would lead the Liberty League and rank 10th in the nation. However, DelliSanti hasn’t punted enough this season to meet the ranking minimum (3.6 p/g). He’s landed eight of his 19 punts inside the opponent’s 20 (3rd in the league) and boomed a league-high four punts that have traveled 50-plus yards. On top of that, DelliSanti has caught 11 passes for 166 yards.

SPEAKING OF PUNTING: Hobart is one of the top punting teams in the nation. The Statesmen lead the nation in net punting, averaging 39.78 yards. Hobart is fourth in punt return defense, “allowing” minus 0.5 yards per return.

IN THE ZONE: The Statesmen are a perfect 21-for-21 in the red zone this season, reaching the end zone 16 times while kicking five field goals. Hobart is one of four teams in Division III to cash in on all of its red zone trips. Case Western Reserve (26), North Central (Ill.) (36) and Central (Iowa) (27) are the other three.

POINTS APLENTY: Hobart’s 62-24 win over Morrisville State on Boswell Field marked the most points scored by the Statesmen since posting a 70-0 victory over Geneva A.C. during the 1896 season.

COLOSSAL COMBINATION: Hobart’s 62-point outburst was followed by a 56-point ef-fort at Shenandoah. The combined 118 points mark the most for the Statesmen in back-to-back games. The previous record was 107 set in 1972 (topped RPI 47-0 and beat RIT 60-13).

BIG NUMBERS: On Sept. 15, Hobart and Shenandoah combined for 1,076 yards of offense, 378

MANY HAPPY RETURNS: Following the Shenandoah game, first-year SHAHKYLE MATTHEWS was named the Liberty League Special Teams Performer of the Week. He returned three kickoffs for a Hobart game record 143 yards and a TD. Matthews scored on a 95-yard return in the second quarter. It was the first kick return for a touchdown by a Statesman since Sept. 11, 2010, and it was the longest kick return by a Statesman since Sept. 30, 2000 (DYSHAWN WASHINGTON ’06, 97 yards vs. St. Lawrence). Matthews leads the Liberty League and is 41st in the nation in kickoff return average (25.3).

FAST START: Hobart piled up points in a hurry against Morrisville State. The Statesmen scored touch-downs on their first four possessions and came away with points on eight of their first 10 possessions. Hobart only punted once in the first half. The other drive that failed to produce points was when the Statesmen took a knee to run off the final eight seconds of the half, following an interception. The fast start staked Hobart to a 52-7 lead with about six and a half minutes left in the third quarter.

FASTER START: After scoring touchdowns on its first four possessions against Morrisville, Hobart took it a step further at Shenandoah, reaching the end zone on its first five possessions.

THE TAKEAWAY: Hobart had six takeaways in its win over Morrisville State. The Statesmen recovered four fumbles, matching the program’s single game record set on Nov. 11, 2017 in a win at Rochester. Hobart also had a pair of interceptions against the Mustangs, including junior ANDREW KOONZ’s first quarter pick and 25-yard return that set up the team’s fourth touchdown of the day. The six take-aways are the most by the Statesmen since Oct. 11, 2003. On that day, Hobart intercepted Rochester’s quarterback five times and recovered three fumbles in a 17-13 loss to the Yellowjackets.

ON THE REBOUND: Over the past three seasons, Hobart is 8-1 in games immediately following a loss. The Statesmen haven’t lost consecutive games since October of 2015 (lost 35-13 at Springfield & 21-20 vs. Rensselaer).

PROTECT THIS HOUSE: Since the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation opened in 2010, Hobart is 41-7 on Boswell Field. In fact, the Statesmen haven’t finished a season with a losing record on their home field since 1998.

TEAM 125: The 2018 season is Hobart’s 125th varsity football season. Since the inaugural season of 1891, the Statesmen have compiled a 514-473-44 (.520) all-time record.

O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Senior tight end MATTHEW WOODS and junior linebacker JAYSON PRINCE were elected to serve as this season’s captains.

HE’S THE BOSS: Hobart is led by first-year Head Coach KEVIN DeWALL ’00. He’s the first alum to lead the Statesmen since BABE KRAUS ’24 coached the 1942 Hobart football team. DeWall returned to his alma mater after spending the previous three seasons as the head coach at Endicott College.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Hobart’s roster leans heavily to the young side this season. The Statesmen have eight seniors, 18 juniors, 36 sophomores and 39 first-years. Not counting special teams, there are 12 first-years listed on this week’s two-deep.

FROM COAST TO COAST: Hobart’s roster stretches from coast to coast. From Oakland, Calif. (junior fullback OMARI DAVIS) to Duxbury, Mass. (first-year wide receiver JAMES MIELE), the Statesmen hail from 12 different states. Not surprisingly, New York is the most represented on Hobart’s roster (46) with Massachusetts and New Jersey tied for second (16).

PUTTING POINTS ON THE BOARD: Hobart has scored in 175 consecutive games. The last time the Statesmen were shut out was Sept. 16, 2000, a 14-0 defeat at Rochester. The streak is older than four current Statesmen.

GIVE ME LIBERTY: Since the Liberty League was founded as the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion in 1995, Hobart has won at least a share of 11 conference championships (1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016).

ON THE AIR: Hobart football games are broadcast live on WEOS-FM (89.5/90.3). Veteran play-by-play man TED BAKER describes the action with former Hobart defensive line coach TERRY MUFFLEY providing analysis.

SOCIAL CIRCLES: Fans can follow Hobart football and all of the Colleges’ athletic teams across several social media platforms. The Statesmen and Herons are on Facebook (facebook.com/hobartstatesmen), Instagram (@HWSathletics), Twitter (@HWSAthletics), and YouTube (youtube.com/HWSathletics).

UP NEXT: Hobart is off next Saturday and will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 3, when the States-men host Ithaca on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Hobart will honor the team’s seniors and, at halftime, introduce the Hobart Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
