Hi everyone,
I want to start off my report by thanking everyone from players,
coaches, members, volunteers, supporters and the board for the
support of the club during this 2020 season.
Congratulations to our 2019 AGM Life Members (from left) Tony
McSherry, Russell Cripps, Janet Cripps,
Graeme Mason (Cat Weazle for you learners) – front row Irene
Bacon.
I don’t know about everyone else, but it feels like this year has
gone forever. We sat here last year optimistic about the future of
the club going into the 2020 season, pre-season training was under
way and the board were working through functions and planning for
the year and then we were hit with the COVID pandemic. This caught
everyone by surprise and what do we do with our season?
As it was the season start was delayed as we know. This is where I
really want to explain how things worked from here as far as the
league and the club were concerned. As the players couldn’t train
together or in smaller groups, we needed the players to continue
with their fitness and game skills. Senior coach Alex Gilmour kept
communicating to the players and they continued with their
programs. As for the board and running the club, well we had to
change the way we did things, zoom meetings and phone in calls
became the norm, as it did in most places. Just like the players we
had a lot of our good work leading into the season unravel as the
season opener came and went and then the year kept going.
The decision was made by all SFL clubs that if one club looked like
it would not survive the season then we would not play at all. At
this time clubs were required to take a good look at what their
financial position would be if we continued on with the season and
had to pay the same amount of expenses we would in a normal season.
I spent an hour or so before speaking to the board about this and
with the small amount of information I had we would be down
approximately $80k, I did it again and got the same figure. I
thought if we go on like that then you would be voting for another
President tonight. As a board we sat down with all the information
and went through the figures again and yes we would be down but
this would be a little better but still not enough to put us in
good stead for 2021 and beyond. It was at this time Scott Quinn,
Alex and myself met with the playing group and
10
they decided that it was for the benefit of the club that they
would go without player payments for the year. This was a massive
vote of confidence from the playing group and reaffirmed that we
were on the right path.
As time went on the “season” got shorter and shorter and it was
getting to the stage where it nearly became impossible to hold a
season at all. With some restrictions lifted by the government the
SFL clubs deemed it safe to run a shortened season that would give
the clubs something to play for. The restrictions at the start were
put in place to keep players away from each other as much as
possible so players were able to begin training in small groups and
then as time went on that lifted into whole group training. As far
as crowds on game day were concerned this became a numbers game
with 500 allowed in the ground at any one time and patrons were to
be seated in the wet area. I know this was hard to police
especially during the first round with our historic win over
Lindisfarne.
Source: The Mercury, June 25 2020
The restrictions not only affected game day viewing but it also
affected club functions. This meant some tactical thinking from the
board with the President’s Lunch and Ladies day being called off.
Our Black and Gold Ball became A night in the Den and our best and
fairest was a sit-down affair. This meant that we weren’t able to
have as many people to the events as we would like or normally have
to them.
As President, I think this year really showed that, as a club we
are prepared for anything. We recruited well in the off-season,
trained hard and were ready to go pre COVID-19, we handled the
shutdown as well as any club could have by continuously
communicating to the playing group and our supporter base. When it
came time to re-start training, we were as prepared as we could be
from a safety perspective. Once the season got underway it
was
11
obvious that there was great improvement from the previous seasons
and with our first two wins coming against sides we had not beaten
in our time back in the SFL we certainly looked in good shape. To
eventually make the finals in a shortened season was no mean feat
and I give massive congratulations to Alex, his coaching staff and
all the players. 2021 is a whole new story, but I am confident that
the work is well underway to get the players that we need to fill
the gaps that have been identified.
The Board After the 2019 AGM
The board will also undergo some changes next year and I want to
take this time to thank everyone for your time, patience and energy
this year. It’s not an easy job and a lot of the hard work goes
unnoticed but what we do is important. So, thank you. To those of
you stepping down, I and the club appreciate the contribution you
have made to the club and wish you all the best in whatever you do
next. Remember you are always welcome at the TCA any time. For
those of us continuing, the work keeps going. We don’t stop (we
might for a little break over Christmas), we have a lot to do
before next year and I am confident that we can improve, just like
the players, and grow as a board next year and get some important
work done.
Thank you all again for your support over this interesting year it
means a lot to all involved. This club is special to us all and we
all love being around it as a group. Let’s keep that love and
support going into 2021 and we should have an excellent year.
Thanks
Senior Football Department Report 2020
HFC 2020 Assistant Senior Coach Brad Joseph and Senior Coach Alex
Gilmour
If you had of told me 12 months ago that season 2020 would be an
8-week roster plus finals due to a global pandemic I wouldn’t of
believed you! And wow what a year it has been for the Hobart FC
taking it in their stride with the Seniors making the finals after
finishing in last place with zero wins in 2019.
Back in October 2019 the club were in a position where if we didn’t
land a new senior coach that would be able to turn this club around
on and off the field then things were not looking great for the
future of the Hobart FC.
I decided to form a subcommittee at the end of season 2019 that
included Nathan Hartnett, Sam Hughes, John Mathers & Myself and
in the first four to six weeks of approaching potential coaches we
were starting to find out how hard it is to convince a new coach
that the Hobart FC is a great club after what has happened in
previous years and that we had a great group of players that had
potential if the right coach comes along and brings 4-6 new players
with them.
After 6 weeks of interviewing and talking to potential coaches we
were getting to the end of the recruitment window and it wasn’t
looking like we would be going to land our ideal scenario of a
playing coach that would bring 4-6 senior players with them, We had
Nathan Hartnett on standby for coaching in 2021 which we really
appreciated him being that option as if we didn’t have him it was
looking very glim for the football club moving forward.
While away on a family holiday I was still talking to the
subcommittee regularly and potential coaches and one night I
received a message from one of the coaches we had at the top of the
list that we targeted to get on board early in the piece to say
that he has reconsidered and wants to catch up for a chat! Wow to
say that we were over the moon with excitement would be an
understatement and the rest is history!
13
A few days after returning from the family holiday I caught up with
Alex Gilmour and we came to an agreement to sign him on as the
Hobart FC Senior Playing Coach for season 2020 & 2021, The
other signing that came straight away was our new Assistant Playing
Coach in Brad Joseph who had been Alex’s Captain at their previous
club.
This is exactly what the Hobart FC needed and Alex had his two
assistant coaches lined up and another 2-3 players already keen to
sign on, In the end we picked up 6-7 players from Alex & Brad
coming on board which was outstanding.
The 2020 HFC Coaching Group
Sam Hughes was reappointed as Reserves Coach and we also appointed
James Caulfield as Under 19s Coach but unfortunately we couldn’t
get enough interest from players to field an under 19s side due to
having to build a team from scratch as our current juniors are only
at the under 12s age group.
Our pre-season started in Mid November 2020 with our training being
held at Montrose Bay High School, It stood out very early that we
had a great coach on board and that he was going to get the best
out of our current players and the way he brought in the new
players and it all gelled together beautifully.
We played Dosa in our yearly pre-season game at Campania and after
several years of the Tye Bennett shield going back to the Dosa
clubrooms we won the game and put the shield up in our clubrooms
which was a great way to start off 2020, We then went on a road
trip up to Launceston to play St Pats at their home ground which we
also won convincingly and the trip back on the bus was certainly
what Alex and myself were hoping it would be in getting the team to
really bond together ready for season 2020.
14
Tye Bennett Cup Winners 2020
We then got the news that season 2020 would go on hold due to the
covid-19 virus which to everyone’s credit from the SFL to the
Hobart FC Board, Coaches, Players & Supporters everyone handled
it the best they could and we knew that everyone would do their
best to get the season up and going again in 2020!
Leading up to round 1 that had been communicated to us from the SFL
as starting on the 25th of July there were still some decisions the
club had to make to confirm that playing in 2020 was sustainable
for us and a big thing we had to look at was discussing Player
payments which is where majority of our costs come from.
I remember calling the meeting with the playing group after
training one night and Callam, Alex and Myself put it out to the
playing group to see what they thought would be the best thing for
the club with playing in 2020 with the costs associated with
fielding sides every week and the normal costs that go with playing
every season.
The players were the ones that came up with the idea of playing for
zero game payments for the entire season which would make playing
in this shortened roster a lot more viable for the club to building
a sustainable future moving forward, To say we were so proud of the
playing group in coming to this agreement would be an
understatement as they have really shown there love and commitment
to the Hobart FC.

We ended up playing our first roster game on the 25th of July
against the reigning premiers in Lindisfarne at the TCA, We were
going into this game with confidence that we could certainly be
more competitive based on our new recruits and preseason form. What
a win it was to knock off the 2 time reining premiers on our home
ground in front of a large crowd at the TCA, It was a very
emotional day and once again showed that Alex Gilmour is one of if
not the best coaches in the state.
We won our next couple of games against Claremont & Sorell
which was great especially the come from behind win against
Claremont on their home turf and going into round four vs Huonville
we were sitting on 3 wins and zero losses, The Huonville game
certainly showed us that we have some work to do all over the
ground and the need to recruit some height in the backline and a
Ruckman is crucial for us moving forward.
The remainder of the season we won 2 more games against Brighton
& Dodges Ferry and meant we finished with 5 wins 3 losses and
made the finals for the first time since 2016.
The Elimination Final against Lindisfarne on their home ground
started well but once our Assistant playing coach in Brad Joseph
went down with concussion it really hurt us in the backline and
once again showed we need to recruit some backline players to be
able to cover for others players if they aren’t on the
ground.
Overall it was an outstanding year by our Senior playing group and
unfortunately our Reserves didn’t get to the finals due to a couple
of losses that they should of really won but we honestly feel that
Covid-19 didn’t help the Reserves team with their fitness levels
etc
I would like to finish off my report by thanking a few people,
Firstly to the Hobart FC board thank you for supporting the choice
that the subcommittee made for our new senior coach and senior
assistant coach in 2019 and the support throughout the season, To
the
16
volunteers at the football club I thank you from all of us in the
football department for all your support we really appreciate it
and understand that if we don’t have volunteers we don’t have a
football club.
To the coaches firstly Alex Gilmour I would like to say that having
him on board has been a massive coup for our football club and it
has already shown in the first twelve months of his contract that
he is very professional and only wants the best for our club moving
forward and to have him and his family on board for the next 3
years we couldn’t ask for any better people to be leading our club,
To Brad Joseph, Paul Rainbird & Peter Jelkic I thank you also
for what you have brought to our club so far and to have such
quality people involved at our football club on and off the field
is amazing.
2020 HFC Senior Leadership Group
To Sam Hughes thank you for your service over the last couple of
years as Reserves coach and I know how much work you have to put
into coaching the Reserves side and I wish you all the best in your
new position as a Senior Assistant coach in 2021. To Cam Stone the
Reserves Assistant coach also a big thankyou to you too, And to
James Caulfield unfortunately we didn’t get a under 19s team up and
going in 2020 but I thank you for putting your hand up also.
I’m very proud to say that our playing group from season 2020 have
all signed on for the next couple of seasons and we are now into
the recruiting window for 2021 which has started extremely well and
all going to plan we will have a under 19s team in 2021.
Regards

First off I’d like to thank the Hobart Football Club for appointing
me as senior coach in 2020 and what an exciting year it was for all
involved. I took on the job knowing the challenges that we as a
coaching group faced but with hard work , organisation and
communication we thought the playing group were able to pick up the
game plan relatively quickly and to our eye were a lot more
advanced of where we thought they’d be at by the end of
pre-season.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Scott Quinn for his
tireless work over the off season in helping me recruit players to
the club and also his work throughout the season.... a true
professional and certainly one of if not the best footy director
I’ve worked with. Brad Joseph, Aaron Kaye , Luke & Jack Adams ,
Chris Hutchison , Liam Smith, Kobey Phillips and Tim Clark were all
new recruits to the football club and all played a huge part in the
club jumping up the ladder this season. All players have
recommitted for next season which is fantastic for us and shows the
positive direction we are headed in.
Pre-season was fierce and intense with a huge focus on repetitive
running efforts. We wanted to build to strong base initially so the
boys would have the best chance to carry out the game plan at a
high fitness level. Our ball use was a bit of a mixture of
repeating the basics mixed in with drills based around how we
wanted to transition the ball from the back half to the fwd half.
Towards the end of pre-season, a real highlight was our club
triathlon which we completed at Cremorne. Players were drawn
randomly in groups of 3 with a running, cycling and swimming leg to
be done. It was a gruelling day but one that challenged
18
the players mentally and physically and we all came through from it
well. Thank you to all volunteers who assisted on the day.
Our pre-season practice match form was really strong and the signs
were there right from the start. We played a couple of Intra club
games amongst ourselves just to get the basics right to start with
then we opened our account with a solid win against Dosa at
Campania to bring the Tye Bennett Cup back to the TCA after 5 years
away.... a great result first up for the boys which I think gave
them great belief. Our “pre season grand final” was our bus trip
away to Launceston to play division 1 premiers St Pats. We built
this up as a big game and a game that would really show us where we
are at leading into round 1. It was a physical game in warm
conditions with both sides playing a strong brand of footy for the
majority of the game ... we travelled home 28point winners and with
some real confidence that we’d ticked off a successful pre season.
The bus trip was a great experience for everyone involved, I’d
always done it at Richmond for the 5 years and wanted to continue
it at Hobart. For a couple of reasons : 1. The boys get to
experience traveling together, preparing for a game of footy in a
different environment to what they are used to down here in Hobart
- you learn a lot about how each individual responds to it. 2. The
bus trip home in particular gives the boys an opportunity to have a
couple of drinks , enjoy themselves and each year I’ve found that
it’s brought the group that I’ve coached closer together ... blokes
come out of their shell a touch and open up a bit a talk to their
teammates a lot more. Certainly, an experience that can bring a
sporting team closer together.
Covid hit and knocked everyone and every league around quite
considerably. We chose to give the players some space and to let
each individual deal with the situation how they needed to. Players
were required to regularly go for runs and keep themselves in
respectable condition. Many thought that the season wouldn’t go
ahead but to the SFL’s credit we were able to arrange an 8 game
roster with a finals series - a great outcome for all clubs.
Round 1 - what a day! Just fantastic to see so many smiles on the
faces of people who have been craving a win for so long!!
Lindisfarne obviously got the last laugh in the elimination final
but I think everyone who is involved with the club would agree that
round 1 this season was a special moment in the clubs history. We
followed that win up with a tough away win against Claremont then a
dominant victory against Sorell at home. 3 from 3 probably backed
up where I thought we were at towards the end of pre-season.
Huonville and Cygnet were the two sides that got hold of us during
the roster season, we let ourselves down in a couple of quarters
during both of those games and paid the price with heavy losses. We
learnt plenty from those games but in particular the need to stay
switched on for the entire 4 quarters against the top sides and
that defensively we must be better. The defensive side of our game
is where we will really look to make inroads in 2021. I think with
a full uninterrupted pre-season we will tick this off nicely.
19
Our season came to an end in the elimination final against
Lindisfarne at Anzac Park. The boys tried desperately but despite
starting the game so well we weren’t able to match Lindisfarne for
the full game. Losing Brad Joseph early to bad concussion certainly
forced us to throw things around a bit but the Two blues were the
better side on the day.
We played 31 players in total at senior level this season and it
was fantastic to blood first gamer Tyler Raspin in the elimination
final. I think that shows that as a coaching group we will back in
and reward young players who deserve opportunity. Brock Daniels was
another who in 2019 was an association U/19 B&F winner that we
played in the seniors . If it wasn’t for a bad shoulder injury then
Brock would of played every senior game and would of finished in
the top bracket of the club B&F count........ the future at the
Hobart FC is extremely bright.
20
Well done to all award winners at the B&F night and everyone
involved in organising the night.
Thank you to all our loyal sponsors who have stuck with us in
really challenging times this season .... your sponsorship is
greatly appreciated and vital for us as club to continue on into
what is going to be a very successful next 3-4 years at the
club.

Finally thank you to all our members, supporters, volunteers etc
for making myself and my family feel so welcome at the Hobart
Football Club. I am fully committed, invested and determined to
lead this football club to success in the coming years and we as a
coaching group will leave no stone unturned in our quest for
premiership glory.
Alex Gilmour - Senior Coach
Womens Football Report
HFC women's team put in a gutsy effort in the 2020 season,
impressing spectators and opposition with their continuous
improvement over the course of the short season.
In the first 3 rounds the girls were challenged by some of the top
teams in the competition - University 14.18 (102) d. Hob 1.1 (7),
Lindisfarne 20.15 (135) d. Hob 0.0 (0), Claremont 22.5 (137) d. Hob
0.0 (0). Despite heavy losses the girls showed the determination to
keep up the fighting spirit. Coming up against North Hobart in
round 4 was a demonstration of the girl’s improvement in the first
few weeks, being narrowly defeated by only 9 pts - North Hob 2.4
(16) d. Hob 1.1 (7). This was a huge effort and proof that they are
a competitive side. The girls kept up the fight in round 5 against
Huonville and in round 6 taking their first big victory defeating
New Norfolk 7.12 (114) to 0.1 (1). The intensity was maintained in
the next round against a tough Brighton, but were defeated 8.12
(60) hob 0.0 (0).
The last three rounds saw the HFC women come up against
Kingborough, Cygnet and the South East Suns - Kingborough 3.6 (24)
d. Hob 0.1 (1), Cygnet 12.8 (80) d. Hob 0.0 (0), SES 12.4 (76) Hob
1.0 (6). All three games fought with high intensity with an
exceptional effort put in for the last game of the season against
the experienced and skilled South East Suns. Unfortunately the hard
fought efforts did not translate to the score board, however one of
the most common comments of the season were that the score board
did not reflect the way the girls played each game. The playing
group, captain Fiona Langford and coach Renee Schuettpelz should
all be proud of the way the Hobart girls held their heads high and
continued to play hard and each game.

The Masters team, the ‘Pigskins’, sat out the 2020 season.
In late June, the Masters delegates agreed to suspend the 2020
season on the basis that it was not feasible - for a whole list of
reasons, logistics and costs associated – it was all nonsensical on
the back of the requirements and expectations associated with the
pandemic and operating in a COVID environment.
We decided this was a great opportunity to focus on team and club
culture for the remainder of 2020. Train once a week, allow the
beer and feed option once restrictions allow for it. At this point,
we also thought it would be a great opportunity for the Masters
players to volunteer and support the HFC seniors on game day, run
the bar, canteen, gate, with a hope this may assist in building
some unity between the Masters and the club.
In deciding to postpone the season, we went back to what the
purpose of the Masters footy league is. It is about connection,
mateship, and other social aspects. So on the back of that, we
indicated that we would meet again in late July to discuss the
prospects of a gala day type event for Masters to be held at the
end of August with proceeds from the day split evenly between all
teams.
However, in a unique turn of events, in late July, a decision was
made to kick off a Masters season with only four teams nominating
to be involved. It has to be noted that the Pigskins were not given
the opportunity at this point to nominate to be involved in the
shortened season. This severely derailed any plans the team had to
build on the opportunities the abandoned season presented. A
disappointing loss, and one we are still unsure we can fully
recover from, but time will tell.
Up to eight HFC Masters registered players requested transfers to
other clubs to be able to compete in the shortened season. All
players were released with a permit until 30/10/2020 and an
expectation that they will return to the club for the 2021
season.
Michael Gozzi accepted an opportunity to join the HFC Board on a
casual basis to represent the interest of the Masters team. Also in
2020, Wade Chatterton stepped down as Pigskin’s Manager and Team
Coordinator. Wade has handed over responsibilities to Terry Howard
(Financials) and Rod Powell (Team Manager). We went into the year
without a coach, with Chris Jordan stepping down at the start of
the year. Heath Walker agreed to return to the coaching role in
2020 with full support of the team, although, confirmation of his
interest to coach the team in 2021 is yet to be determined.
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Wade for his commitment
to the team over the many years of his involvement, and to Chris in
his contribution to the team as coach in 2019, and player the years
prior. We’d also like to thank those Masters players that remained
connected to the team during this very difficult year.

Looking to the year ahead, in 2021 we intend to play under the name
of Hobart Masters, officially dropping the ‘Pigskins’ moniker. A
new team jumper bares the traditional HFC colours and this will be
unveiled next season. In addition, the team will be establishing a
football committee for the 2021 season to help with planning and
achieving club goals. We will aim to recruit past HFC players,
ensuring continuity of HFC club and culture for years to
come.

2020 Junior Football Report
Leaving aside the disruptions caused by Covid-19 at the start of
the season, the overall outcome was resoundingly positive. Our
number of participating teams increased by one, meaning we fielded
all age groups from U8’s to U11’s and maintained an U11 girls
team.
Across the board we were competitive in ability and with a bit of
manipulation, all teams had enough players each week. The
willingness of players to double up when asked was commendable
particularly when this involved travelling to multiple grounds.
Going forward most of the teams could do with a few more numbers to
ensure that there is cover against the few that invariably drop out
at the end of each season. A repetition of 2020 recruitment should
see us set a solid platform for re-entry into youth football in
2022.
Two new coaches took on teams this year. With the inability of
Sebastian Hartman to commit for another season the call went out to
Justin Wilson (past player) to take charge of his son’s U10’s team.
Notwithstanding some initial trepidation, Justin formed an
immediate and strong partnership with Team Manager Duncan Bull, who
together continued to mould together an enthusiastic group who put
together an impressive list of strong performances.
With Jarrod Kleeman opting to coach U8’s for a second year, the
opportunity arose for an U9’s coach. Initially this role was
accepted by Tim Clark from our senior playing group who
unfortunately had to pull out a few weeks into the season because
of family reasons. Fortunately, Colin Shugg agreed to take over.
For our players the transition was seamless. The support provided
by Team Manager Kristy Adams and parents was exceptional.
As mentioned, Jarrod Kleeman again coached the U8’s with help from
Team Manager Natalie Fehlberg. Also unchanged was Russell Cripps
who coached the U11 girls together with Team Manager Bruce Arnold,
whilst Troy Pfitzner again coached the U11 boys with Team Manager
Pam Adams.
The Auskick program was delivered by Phil Geason who this year
co-opted Justin Harvey as his side kick. Together with help from
other parents they delivered their own unique style
25
of introduction to AFL football. All of the children now have
nicknames that might endure for life.
To all of our Coaches, Team Managers, umpires and general helpers
we express our sincere thanks.
Our nominees to the 2020 STJFL awards this year were: -
• Jarrod Kleeman for coach of the year • Jan de Groot for umpire of
the year and • Russell Cripps for volunteer of the year. •
Congratulations to Russell for being awarded the STJFL volunteer in
2020.
Covid-19 may have challenged us, frustrated us and annoyed us, but
it didn’t stop us from playing another season of football.
Unfortunately it has heralded the last hurrah to our magnificent
canteen crew who have finally succumbed to too many birthdays and
some very long days. To Gayle and Andrew McElwee, Darryl and Wendy
Young, a very big thank you. Sundays at the TCA will never be the
same.
