IntroductionHockey in India became popular with the coming of the British.

It was when the British army regiments played the game; the Indian

regiments also picked up the game and then followed the tradition of

playing the game of hockey.

Hockey in India saw its first ever in house hockey club in Calcutta,

which was formed in the year 1885-86. Then followed the formation of

hockey clubs in Bombay and Punjab.

Slowly and gradually this game gained its importance amongst the

masses and more and more people started playing it.

Why is Hockey our National game?There was a Golden Period where there were no

competitors in the international scenario to match the

magical hands of Indian hockey players.

The Golden Era of hockey was the period from 1928 -

1956 when India won 6 successive gold medals in the

Olympic Games.

This is the why Hockey was chosen as our National game.

The Hockey team was ironically considered to have a weak

attack.

India's tally of 57 goals in the event is the highest for any team.

And the defense, called inexperienced and ageing at the same

time, was like a wall which the Koreans found unbreakable.

India's maiden victory at the Asia Cup in 2003 came at a time

when Indian hockey was on a high. This victory, on the otherhand, could perhaps be seen as heralding a new beginning.

The Indian government has demoted hockey from the "priority"

to the "general" category of sports because of the continuous poor

showing of the national team in all major tournaments in recent

years.

But the win over the Asia cup has given Hockey & Hockey lovers a

new ray of hope.

STEP-MOTHERLY TREATMENTThis was statement made by some of the hockey players when they

were ignored after winning the Asia cup .

Whereas the cricketers were treated as God on winning the T20

World cup.

The hockey players felt as if they were being sidelined. They also

won and deserved rewards and most importantly praise and

recognition as well, which they didnt get.

CHUCK DIYA HOCKEYThe media has projected Cricket so much that everyone is glued to it

and every kid wants to be into cricket because of the limelight.

Another reason why hockey is neglected lies somewhere in our

outlook towards the game. People showed an indifferent attitude when

the Asia cup was won.

The cricketers won and they deserve their praise and the money too

because they have worked hard for it.

There was absolutely cold reaction for national game from the

Government and the federation as well.

Tirkey said the team had worked hard and

played outstanding hockey to bring the honor

and they deserved acknowledgement from

people as well as associations. "Every player

played well in the Asia Cup. We played

attacking hockey for which we are known.

The team played like a unit. The state

governments at least should recognize what

we have achieved," Tirkey said.

"Performance of our cricket team in the

Twenty20 cricket World Cup was very good.

ConclusionThe Hockey team needs to win more consistently. A one odd victory cant

bring all the attention overnight. No one like to see a loosing team. Even when

cricketers loose people kick them and criticize them like anything.

Hockey doesn't have all that money but its a fascinating sport. Its not cricket

boards fault that hockey people are poor. Its the IHF that must take charge and

show some brain.

The time has come when the government should promote all sports without

any biasing. Step-motherly attitude towards other sports leads us nowhere.. An

un-biased Sports policy is the need of today.
