What is OACS?OACS is a voluntary, independent, non-profit making and confidential counselling service provided by qualified, supervised counsellors and operates within the BACP’s ethical framework for good practice. They offer support to address many different kinds of concerns including stress/anxiety, depression, relationship problems, drugs or alcoholmisuse, abuse (sexual, emotional, physical), childhood trauma, food issues, body image distortion, addiction, loss, bereavement, bullying, emotional crisis/breakdown or irrational fears.What does it cost?Our aim is to provide a counselling service which is accessible to everyone. We do not charge a set fee, but we do ask clients to make an agreed regular donation that is within their financial capabilities. This will be discussed at the first session.
Each one of us could experience challenges and issues that can cause us concern and worry throughout our lifetime. Whilst some people prefer to work through their difficulties alone, others might find that talking to an independent counsellor provides an opportunity to explore
issues that are troubling us. Counsellors at OACS are here to help.

Local InfoDog IssuesYou may have recently read that a Jack Russell Terrier was
attacked and killed by an Akita dog in Magnolia Park.Dog owners are responsible for the control of their dogs on their property, on the streets and in parks. They must also keep dangerous dogs on a lead and muzzled if required by law. It’s bad enough that someone has lost their pet but it could have been even more serious if it had attacked a small child. We have received a number of complaints from residents about dog mess left on our streets by a few irresponsible dog owners. We all know the warnings about dog mess and eye disease, especially with children. Your local councils supply dog bins in many recognised dog walking locations but if there is no bin available you must pick it up with a bag and take it home.

that organises coach trips including pickup points in Hawkwell.We still have some places available on trips for 2013:-Monday 23rd – Friday 27th September – 5 day break in Falmouth.We will be staying at the 4 star St Michael’s Hotel Falmouth situated directly on the sea front. There will be evening meal, bed & breakfast, and the rooms are en-suite with all facilities. There is a swimming pool, gym, sauna & steam room. All the above including coach trips and entrance fees for outings are included in price.Tuesday: In the morning we visit the town of Falmouth.Wednesday: We visit Mevagissey, a picturesque fi shing village. Thursday: We explore the Cathedral City of Truro.Friday: We leave for home via lunch in Bristol.Sunday 27th October – Autumn Tints Tour through Hampshire.Friday 6th December – A Dickensian Christmas.

FC Hockley won their fi rst game of pre season 4-2
against Ashingdon. The blues never went behind and the fi tnesswork of the last 8 weeks paid off in the last 20 minutes where FCH scored 2 goals and seemed to still have energy as the opposition started to fade. Results from the Tour to Lille will be in next months edition and Hockley hope that the continental football will help the team to be ready for the fi rst game of the season. Up the blues!

Clements Gate
We had a number of concerns from our residents about the Clements Gate estate development in Rectory Road,
including a rat infestation due to land clearance. One of the residents living adjacent to the development informed us that rats have chewed through her fence also the base of her shed and are leaving droppings everywhere. We have been informed that 7 residents living adjacent to the development have been offered £50 each by Rochford District Council (RDC) to sort out the rat issue as RDC no longer employ someone to do this work. We feel this is a cop-out as £50 would just about cover the call out charge and it leaves the residents to do all the organising. We have also been informed that the new houses will be sold with a service charge starting at £200 per year to maintain the green areas of the estate that RDC refuse to maintain.
Police MeetingsThe monthly neighbourhood police meetings for Hockley and
west Hawkwell were recently taken over by PC Matthew Zurowski. He has now moved to Norfolk, which means we will get yet another PC for our area. We have been in touch with Chief Inspector Ian Cummings who informs us that a local man PC Steve Judd has been appointed but it could be a month before he is released from his current post. Inconsiderate drivers are leaving their cars unattended in the turn-round and across drives in Sunny Road again when dropping kids off at the school. Please think how you would feel if it was your road and park appropriately.

I visited the Coe Family, and friends, in May 2000, to record their memories of Hawkwell in their younger days. One
of their stories was about the Bicycle Speedway. It used to be opposite Rawal Pindi Nursery on the corner but then they were moved by the Council and had to go up Mount Bovers Lane on the left hand side. Vic Baldry made electric gates for them. They competed with others – there was a League and they won cups and all sorts of things. They used to meet in Mrs Sargant’s house and she used to be ‘thrown out’ every Thursday night because they had their meetings there, the whole garden was full of bikes. Mr Cole,the Rector of Hawkwell, made a fuss about the Bicycle Speedway because it took children away from Sunday School. He laid down the law and they had to try and work it so the children could go to Sunday School as well as the Speedway.
You may have noticed, low in the eastern sky late evening,
a sizeable misty patch of light. The Pleiades, or Seven Sisters as they are known, are back. A sure sign that Autumn is on its way. The Pleiadesbelong to the large constellationof Taurus which straddles most of the eastern horizon but will be diffi cult to make out until this large star cluster gains a good altitude late evening earlySeptember but an hour or two earlier by the end of themonth. When low the Pleiades are more of a dim smudge but given a good clear night and more altitude several individual points of light can be made out embedded within the misty structure. Binoculars, with their extra power, dramatically increase the number of visible pinpoint stars in the cluster. It is not that long ago that this superb star cluster was a prominent object even as it was rising making it easy to spot fi ve or six of the brightest stars embedded within just with the naked eye but the general light pollution in our area now has almost made that a thing of the past. One more faint misty patch to fi nd late evening. The Milky Way, appearing as an irregular band of faint light, can be found low in the northeast passing overhead before sinking into the southwest.Free observing evenings, call for details.Royston Dean, 01702-206244

Animal Magic
In 2011 ‘Friends of Abandoned dogs at Acresway’ was set up to
raise funds to pay for the veterinary costs of the stray and abandoned dogs brought to Acresway Kennels in Thundersley by Local Authority Dog Wardens. Acresway were doing a brilliant job in re housing these dogs but they were being brought in with severe medical
conditions at times which was draining the resources. The fund raising was triggered by one little dog ‘Toffee’ who needed surgery to amputate a leg after an old injury hadn’t been treated. The response was so great it was then decided to continue and F.A.D.A
was formed. We now also support the cost of neutering of the dogs that are being rehoused and our vets bills average £700-£1000 a month. Acresway kennels have rehoused over 500 dogs in 2012 but they still keep coming in! Some of our recent dogs in need of help has been a little Yorkie that had boiling water tipped on her and was left in a terrible state and Peanut a Staffordshire Bull Terrier who was bald and had infected skin and ears through not being treated for mange and a secondary infection. Back to school time again already and after a fantastic summer here at Belchamps we are now looking forward to a busy
autumn. This summer we saw scouts and guides from around the UK and Germany descend on Belchamps and enjoy the warm weather. We’ve also had lots of schools on their year 6 residential and lots of people celebrating their birthday. Through the summer we also worked in partnership with the council and hosted the National Citizen Service residential. Through the summerholidays many children enjoyed the activities as part of our holiday club. Great to see so many young people using the centre and doing constructive and healthy activities through the holidays. Coming up we have more school visits, the councils roadsterscheme teaching school children about road safety, our spookyweekend and of course our annual Fireworks event on 2nd November, this year we have a special VIP area with a guaranteed great view, your own refreshment service and mini bonfi res. The timings for fi reworks night are 6pm gates open, 7-30pm bonfi re, fi reworks at 8pm. Next month we will feature how to stay safe on fi reworks night.
