I have to say I was pretty nervous chairing myfi rst chapter meeting as director. You guys canlook pretty scary from up in front. I got through it without looking stupid so I would say it was a successful January chapter meeting. We only received 10 surveys back out of 170 possibilities, so I hope you have sharpened your pencils andwill be sending them in through e-mail or bringing them to the next meeting. You can drop a line to one of the board members or give us a call! We really want to know whatactivities you would like this chapter to do for 2006. In thiscase we really don’t want a “silent majority”.

I also hope to see you at the next chapter meeting and at the upcoming Bowling Night event. Two eventsthat are being planned for the upcoming year is a Directors’Day Ride for late June and Jeff is wanting to put togethera ride to Street Vibrations. In The Wind…. Jane Allen

This survey was initially presented at the January Meeting. Many of our members were not able to be present and therefore, have not had an opportunity to respond. We would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to share your ideas with us. Below is a list of last year’s events and while two of them will remain essentially unchanged (Poker run and Christmas party); the other events are open for discussions and recommendations. There has been great interest generated for continuing the Bowling Night, and this of course is planned and ready to “roll”. In addition, MORE BINGO was a hot item in the fi rst survey. Please feel free to send your comments to me in an email: [email protected] or leave your survey with t or leave your survey with ta Board Member.

Mark’s Motorcycle Safety Tips

This month I would like to share some information and thoughts about reduced vision situations, lane position and defensive driving, or in our case, defensive ridingriding. As a professional commercial driver for ten years and an emergency vehicle operator for fi ve years, I received training that could be applicable to operating nearly any vehicle over the road, including motorcycles.

As we all know, intersections can be one of the most likely places to have a “share the same space” incident. Particularly now days as more people run red lights, make left turns with out yielding to the right-of way and not coming to a complete stop before proceeding. But there are things we can do to minimize the potential of a collision. First, I would suggest that when you are stopped at a red light and the signal turns green for you, as you begin to let out the clutch, look to both the left and right before proceeding through the intersection to verify that all cross traffi c has stopped. You want to check left fi rst since this is the path you will cross fi rst. In addition, also check forward specifi cally looking for any opposing left turn traffi c that is not yielding.

Now, say you are approaching an intersection controlled by a light and the light is green for you. I would encourage proceeding with caution. One of the things I learned in driver training is to scan the intersection. By this I mean my eyes look to the right of my path, ahead, then the signal, then left of my path, and back to the right. I repeat this visual check until I am through the intersection. What am I looking for? A vehicle running a red from the right, a vehicle from the right and turning right entering my path after stopping (or not stopping), a vehicle turning left across my path, the signal unexpectedly changing, and traffi c running a red from the left. At the same time I have also prepared myself mentally and physically to react quickly. I may even move my right foot off the highway peg down closer to the brake lever and my right fi ngers over the hand

brake lever. (Covering the brake) This could be done with the clutch too.

Maintaining a fairly consistent speed is helpful as well. By doing this the driver who is thinking about proceeding with a right turn after stopping and is calculating your speed and distance is not surprised by your rapid acceleration. One of the reasons cars pull in front of motorcycles is because due to our size, we appear farther away than we are and our speed, or closure rate, is more diffi cult to judge.

We’ve now put that last signal on the edge of town behind us and we’re ready for some open road. Well, here in the valley especially, the road may not be that open. When we are in a curve, approaching the top of a small rise or hill or perhaps in the bottom of a dip in the road, our distance vision is limited. In other words we can’t see as far in front of us as usual. And in addition, vehicles can’t see us either. There are driveways and side roads that a car may be turning off of and onto the road we are on. And of course they are moving much slower at that moment in time. There could also be a vehicle making a left turn across our path. There could be debris or an animal in the road. And don’t forget, since the valley is an agricultural area, there could be slow moving farm equipment. This is especially true during the planting and harvest seasons.

Now, when it comes to lane position there are different schools of thought. One thing that I would agree with though is that there is no one correct lane position at all times for every scenario. However, there are several motivators to choose a particular lane position at any given time. But two key factors to consider are; a lane position that allows you to BE SEEN and that BE SEEN and that BE SEENallows SPACE TO MANEUVER. And I would add to these, a lane position that allows ME TO SEE.

We’re now back at the intersection in town. We are behind one or more vehicles. Is there any

Page 6: HOG CORRAL NEWS...Volume 17 No. 2-3 Feb. & March 2006 HOG CORRAL NEWS Salem Harley-Davidson 3601 Silverton Rd. NE Salem, Or. 97303 Phone #503-363-0634 SALEM HARLEY OWNER’S GROUP

opposing left turn traffi c on the other side of the intersection? Are they going to yield? Can they see me? I like to choose a lane position that will; allow me to see ahead, provides space to maneuver or stop quickly, and that the opposing traffi c can see me behind the vehicles that are in front of me. Since I am not an expert of rider education I will not presume that I should suggest what the best lane position is in this or any scenario. However, I would likely choose a left-portion lane position and not follow too closely to the vehicle in front of me. From here I can perhaps see the opposing left turn traffi c and hopefully they can see me. But again, there could be other variables that would infl uence my choice at that moment.

Another similar scenario is on a rural two lane road. I like to keep enough distance between myself and the vehicle in front of me so I can see both lanes well ahead, and leave space to brake quickly. Again, I would typically choose a left or left center lane position. This increases the angle of which drivers of oncoming traffi c can see me behind the vehicle in front of me. This also contributes to my ability to see ahead.

Another tactic we can use to be aware of our ever changing situation (situation awareness) is

the use of our mirrors. A glance into our mirrors on regular intervals allows us to see what is happening behind us. This contributes to our overall situation awareness. It prevents us from being surprised by a passing vehicle, a vehicle following too closely, or a vehicle loitering near our blind spot.

Obviously there are a multitude of scenarios and variables to consider and discuss. And of course the conditions and situations are constantly changing. Each and every one can’t be addressed in an article. But hopefully with what I have shared with you here has provided you with some things to consider and maybe even a piece of new information. We all know that our hobby of riding motorcycles has its risks. But if we will continually expose our selves to rider education, training and information, and of course use that information, we can minimize those risks. So I would encourage all of us to stay alert and constantly expect the unexpected. Oh yeah, and of course, HAVE FUN!

Ride Safe.

From the July 1990 Chapter newsletter, a report of the Chapter Steak Fry.

Sunshine, good food, and great times with even greater friends are what we had for our Second Annual Ladies of Harley Steak Fry.

Patsy started the day by leading us on a nice country ride over the hills and dells, past the buffalo, to North Albany Park. We arrived ready to have a great day.

Tex, armed with his secret sauce, began the bar-b-que. There was enough food to feed an army. After a great meal we had the horseshoe throwing championship.

Next six teams paired off for a tip-off. Between Mr. Walker bringing some great gifts from the shop and the goodies made by the LOH ladies, we had enough to even raffle off a few after the competition. Cheryl even brought some prizes for the kids.

The softball game that followed brought cheers from the crowd watching. After six tough innings we wrapped things up and headed home.

Thanks to all who brought food and prizes. Most of all thanks to the members that had the heart to show up even if the weather was ‘iffy’ and make the event a success.

Attendees: Jane Allen, Terresa Tompkins, Ann Wagster, Patty and Dave Nichols, John and Robin Zobrist, Diana Hill, Bill Churchill, Dave Elam, Mark Johnston, Mary and Kraig Lund, and Peggy and Bill Owsley.

Meeting was brought to order by Director, Jane Allen, at 630pm. Meeting was held at Elmer’s Restaurant in Salem.

Team Member ReportsTeam Member Reports

Diana Hill, Newsletter Co-EditorDiana Hill, Newsletter Co-Editor, asked to speak fi rst so that she could go home and pack for their trip to Hawaii. Diana announced that there would be no newsletter for the month of February as her computer had crashed and there was not time to rebuild the entire newsletter before they left on their trip.

Diana did present to the Board the upward spiraling costs of the newsletter. The newsletter postage as we all know has increased as of January. She would like to see the Board begin to re-direct members to viewing it on the website rather than mailing it to them. Diana also noted that often times those picking their newsletter up at the meeting failed to cross their names off the list and they end up mailing them another copy. Also those that both the husband and the wife are members need to remember to cross off both names on the list so that a copy is not mailed to them as well.

Diana and Lori’s fi rst priority for March will be to organize this year’ newsletter staff. All volunteers are more than welcome to join.

Peggy Owsley, SecretaryPeggy Owsley, Secretary stated that she thought that John and Robin had done very well with the new “Greeters” idea at this years fi rst Chapter Meeting. Peggy also stated that re-presenting and explaining its purpose at the February Chapter Meeting would help all members to feel a part of the chapter and also show all chapter members that the Board does listen to their needs and desires.

Terresa Tompkins, TreasurerTerresa Tompkins, Treasurer, reviewed the 2005 Financial Statement as compared to the previous year, 2004. The Profi t & Loss showed we were down in 2005 .On our “In Memory of Lyle” patches we currently have taken in $100 plus the $165 donation from Rich & Ann at their Friday Nighter BBQ, for a total of $265 with more patches to sell. The cost of the patches was $200 giving us so far $65 to go towards Lyle’s charity, Friends of the Felines. We will continue to sell patches and then at a later date we will send the proceeds to Friends of the Felines.

Dave Nichols, Assistant DirectorDave Nichols, Assistant Director, proposed two new events that will tie into the Annual Mileage Contest. The fi rst new event would be a “Covered Bridge” event. There are 51 bridges which,

with the directions to each being provided by Dave. Participants would take a picture including the participant and their bike next to the covered bridge’s sign. This event would begin in March and end November 14th. There would be three winners; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd with the prizes to be gift certifi cates from Salem HD in the rd with the prizes to be gift certifi cates from Salem HD in the rd

amounts $75, $50, and $25 respectively for a total of $150.

Dave Elam suggested that a Saturday ride to some of the closer Covered Bridges could be a way to get new members into a group ride. Dave Nichols was in agreement and will work towards getting one set up.

The second event would be a take off from the National HOG contest; the ABC’s of Touring and would be called the ABC’s of Oregon. As in the fi rst event the prizes would be $75, $50, $25 gift certifi cates to Salem HD for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. rd place. rd

Mary Lund, Activity Director, reminded all of the upcoming events. February 18th is night for our bowling event with 18 signed up to participate. It will be held at Town and Country Lanes in Keizer beginning at 630pm.

March 25th is combination Bingo Night and Dessert Auction at the Salem Elks. Terry Parks has agreed to be the auctioneer for the desserts. Still need volunteers for runners. Salem Elks has agreed to allow us to bring in snacks to munch on. The bar will be home for liquid refreshments.

Mary and her husband, Kraig, have spent a great deal of time going through the Poker Run containers. They will be inventorying what is in each container and at Jane’s request will be providing a list in each of the containers. Mary is also working on getting the Poker Run into several northwest bike publications so that we will have a wide range of avenues for publicity.

Survey says! Mary got several responses to her survey with the Scavenger Hunt being a well accepted new idea. John Zobrist and Jane Allen gave multiple suggestions at which point Mary immediately put them down to run the event. The Scavenger Hunt will run at the end of September.

Dave Elam, Senior Road CaptainDave Elam, Senior Road Captain stated that he will be bringing the Friday Night Ride Calendar to the Chapter Meetings so that chapter members may peruse the calendar and be able to choose dates that might be open as well as learn where the ride might be going or who might be leading a specifi c Friday Nighter.Dave will also be in charge of fl yers.

John Zobrist, Egroup ModeratorJohn Zobrist, Egroup Moderator stated that he gets press releases John Zobrist, Egroup Moderator stated that he gets press releases John Zobrist, Egroup Moderatorfrom HD and wondered if the Board felt it was okay for him to post them to the news egroup. The Board unanimously agreed to John putting them on the news egroup. John also reminded each of the Board members to be posting to the news egroup things that pertained to each Board Member’s specifi c area. He asked Dave Nichols to post his two new events to the news egroup and Mark to post his items such as the First Aid Class.

John said that he and Robin had a great time doing the “Greeters”

Page 11: HOG CORRAL NEWS...Volume 17 No. 2-3 Feb. & March 2006 HOG CORRAL NEWS Salem Harley-Davidson 3601 Silverton Rd. NE Salem, Or. 97303 Phone #503-363-0634 SALEM HARLEY OWNER’S GROUP

segment of the meeting but at times felt they had “some-timers” because they sometimes didn’t know some of the newer members as they came in; even some of the older members who do not always come. Robin said at times she found it embarrassing but all agreed they did a great job of pulling off “the welcome”.

Mark Johnston, Safety Offi cerMark Johnston, Safety Offi cer reminded all of the First Aid Mark Johnston, Safety Offi cer reminded all of the First Aid Mark Johnston, Safety Offi cerClass that would be held on February 25th 8-12noon at the Salem Elks. Cost is $5 for the card and 4 hours of your time. The Elks is providing the room to us at no cost.

Mark would like to set up a “Group Ride Curriculum” into some kind of format with the fi rst class to be held in the Spring. It would last approximately 60-90 minutes. Once again John Zobrist offered advice and was elected to help set up the curriculum. Thanks John!!! John suggested that we could end the class room with a short ride somewhere for lunch to practice what they may have just learned in the classroom.

Mark would like ideas for safety articles, information on accidents, such as what could have been done differently to avoid the incident, etc from Board Members and Chapter Members as well.

Regarding Team Oregon, Mark has talked to Jeff and Jeff has agreed that he will take care of the Basic Training classes and Mark will take care of the experienced and advanced rider’s classes. There are still some things that need to be ironed out such as the riding area confi rmed.

As a fi nal remark, Mark questioned how many riders can legally go through a stop sign. Mark stated the general statute says only 2 bikes at a time. Mark asked the Board to recommend that the chapter policy for our chapter events be limited to two riders through an intersection after stopping. Several disagreed with recommending this type of policy. John Zobrist stated that he didn’t feel we should make a recommendation unless the National HOG agrees with it. Dave Nichols also agreed with John and reminded Mark that the Safety Offi cer gives information but does not make decisions for the other riders. Member, Bill Owlsey, also agreed that making any type of chapter policy could easily make the chapter liable for damages, etc., with a chapter member arguing with a police offi cer that it is Salem HOG’s policy to allow 2 bikes. Bill went on to say that each rider must be responsible for themselves as each intersection is different; traffi c at the time will call for a different judgment to be made by each rider. What might be right at one time may be completely wrong the next time. Also each city and/or county offi cer has their own version of what they feel is safe and within the law.

0ld Business

Minutes of the January 2006 Annual Board Meeting were approved.

POT - Dave, Patty and Mary will be going this year. Jeff said preference will be given to those who have not gone before. Jeff as the sponsor of the Chapter will be assisting in the cost

for lodging and travel. He has several ideas that he is working on such as selling Chapter Clothing with the proceeds from the sales to offset the cost of POT. Salem HOG will give the normal $100 per person for expenses. There will be more clarifi cation on this issue to follow.

New Business

Chapter HOG room at the dealership is nearing completion. Jane is shopping for a suitable hutch or table where we can keep such things as the Historian’s books, pictures of events and rides and a place to store the release forms for rides as well as chapter applications. Jeff will be putting up the shelves where we can display trophies and the High Mileage plaque etc. John Zobrist will do the banner for the room, anticipated cost will be $50.

The black chapter fl ag (3x5) appears to have been misplaced. Dave Elam will look into where it may have gone.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:05pm
