This manual presents an evidence-based focal psychodynamic ap-proach for the outpatient treatment of adults with anorexia nervosa, which has been shown to produce lasting changes for patients.

The reader first gains a thorough understanding of the general models and theories of anorexia nervosa. The book then describes in detail a three-phase treatment using focal psychodynamic psychotherapy. It provides extensive hands-on tips, including precise assessment of psychodynamic themes and structures using the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis, reallife case studies, and clinical pearls.

Clinicians also learn how to identify and treat typical ego structural deficits in the areas of affect experience and differentiation, impulse control, self-worth regulation, and body perception. Two detailed case vignettes provide deepened insight into the therapeutic process. A final chapter explores the extensive empirical studies on which this manual is based, in particular the renowned multicenter ANTOP study. Printable tools in the appendices can be used in daily practice.

This book is of interest to clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, counselors, and students

This practice-oriented guide presents a model of personality disor-ders (PDs) based on the latest research showing that “pure” PDs are due to relationship disturbances.

The reader gains concise and clear information about the dual-action regulation model and the framework for clarification-oriented psy-chotherapy, which relates the relationship dysfunction to central re-lationship motives and games. Practical information is given on how to behave with clients and clear therapeutic strategies based on a five-phase model are outlined to help therapists manage interactional problems in therapy and to assist clients in achieving effective change. The eight pure personality disorders (narcissistic, histrionic, depen-

dent, avoidant, schizoid, passive-aggressive, obsessive-compulsive, and paranoid) are each explored in detail so the reader learns about the specific features of each disorder and the associated interactional motives, dysfunctional schemas, and relationship games and tests, as well as which therapeutic approaches are appropriate for a par-ticular PD. As the development of a trusting therapeutic relationship is difficult with this client group, detailed strategies and tips are given throughout.

This book is essential reading for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, counselors, coaches, and students.

Fundamentals of Psychology; Research methods; Social PsychologyFor researchers, teachers, and students concerned with theory of mind across the lifespan.

Theory of mind (ToM) − the ability to attribute mental states to one-self and to others − is known to develop from infancy, and to improve markedly in early childhood. What we don’t know is how ToM develops, changes, and expresses itself after early childhood and across the lifespan.

The contributions in this volume aim to further our understanding in this field. They include a systematic review of longitudinal ToM

research that identifies several precursors to ToM development, in-cluding cognitive abilities and behavioral experiences. There is also a look at the associations between age, executive function, and “life history ToM,” i.e., the recognition that prior life experiences influence how individuals think, feel, and make decisions about the future. In ad-dition, human–robot interaction is investigated, as humans of all ages ascribe mental states to robots – the more human a robot appears and acts, the more “like me” we view and treat it.

Clinical Psychology, Psychotherapy, and Counseling; PsychiatryFor researchers, clinicians, and students working with people who experience delusions.

Delusions (fixed, false beliefs that are not amenable to change in light of conflicting evidence) typically occur in the context of mental dis-orders and are the most prominent symptom of psychosis. They are accompanied by severe distress both for the person who holds them and for other people involved.

In recent years, interest in psychological models and interventions has started to grow. Cognitive behavioral interventions, in particular, have shown promise in reducing delusional conviction and distress, however, the effect sizes leave room for improvement. A step towards improved interventions would be to arrive at a better understanding

of the mechanisms that contribute to the formation and maintenance of delusions. Building on research pointing to the relevance of several psychological mechanisms, such as emotion regulation, reasoning bi-ases, and processing of self-relevant information, interventions that focus more explicitly on these mechanisms might be beneficial.

This collection of research from around the world focuses both on the challenge of improving our understanding of the psychological mechanisms that underlie delusions and on psychological therapy approaches that can be derived from this knowledge.

New insights into delusions: when psychopharmacology is not enough
