Try these sweet holiday treats in seasonal fla- vors that only supply 100 to 110 calories and 3 to 3.5 g fat for each half-cup serving. This com- pares to 12 to 13 g fat and 190 to 200 calories in regular ice cream. Dreyer’s/Edy’s produce their slow-churned light ice cream in limited- edition holiday flavors: Pumpkin, Egg Nog, and Peppermint. The Pumpkin flavor only is made in October, but the Egg Nog and Peppermint are available in November and December. Pros: Lower in fat (3 g vs 12 g) and calories (100 vs 190) than regular ice cream. Cons: This still is a low-nutrient food for the calories. Watch the portion size and enjoy in moderation. The slow-churned process provides a smooth and creamy texture. Edy’s is available east of the Rockies and Dreyer’s to the west. Vitasoy Holly Nog & Seasonal Soy Milk Try Vitasoy’s seasonal beverages for a guilt-free indulgence during the holidays. These fun flavors (Holly Nog and Peppermint Chocolate) are USDA organic, dairy and lactose-free. They come in a 32-oz, shelf-sta- ble package, so refrigeration is not necessary until they are opened. The Holly Nog provides 120 calories and just 2 g fat in an 8-oz serving, while the Peppermint Chocolate provides 140 calories and 4 g fat per serving. Two additional flavors are Chocolate Banana and Strawberry Banana. Pros: Organic, dairy- and lactose-free. Cons: Provides just 4 g soy protein and con- tains about 4 tsp sugar (20 to 22 g) per serv- ing. Use these seasonal soy milks to add flavor to your favorite holiday recipe, coffee, or even an adult beverage. inside Holiday Food Reviews ........... 1-3 10 Healthy Holiday Foods Tip Sheet ........................4 New Food Reviews ................ 5-6 Margarine Comparison Chart ....7 Food Label Logos.................. 8-9 Our mission statement To provide objective, balanced, and science based information on new food products, health issues, food labels, trends, and educational resources. Silk Pumpkin Spice Soymilk

Look for this unique holiday treat in the refrigerated section of your supermarket right next to the milk. Silk Pumpkin Spice Soymilk weighs in at 160 calories and 3 g fat for a 1-cup (8 oz) serving. In addition, Silk Pumpkin Spice is vegan and lactose- and gluten-free.

Another seasonal flavor from Silk is Soy Nog that is 180 calories and 4 g fat per 8 -oz serving. The sugar content is 24 g (about 5 tsp) and the protein is 6 g.

Pros: A good source of soy protein (6 g). Dairy- and lactose-free.

Cons: Provides about 4 tsp sugar (20 g).

Silk Pumpkin Spice can be served cold or warm with a dollop of whipped topping for a festive dessert drink. You also can substitute Silk Pumpkin Spice for milk or water to give a moist pumpkin flavor to your favorite seasonal recipes. For instance, use Silk Pumpkin Spice instead of milk when making pancakes for a special holiday breakfast treat.

Pacific Natural Foods Low Sodium Broths

So many holiday recipes require broths—from adding liquid to stuff-ing to making gravy. Using chicken or vegetable broths adds low fat flavor and moisture. For a great tasting, low-sodium option, try Pacific Natural Foods Low Sodium Organic Chicken or Vegetable Broths. Most broths are high in sodium with as much as 1,540 mg sodium in a 1-cup serving (Campbell’s Chicken Broth). Pacific Natural Foods Low Sodium Chicken Broth contains just 70 mg sodium and the Vegetable Broth con-tains 140 mg. In addition, the Pacific Natural Foods broths are organic and made only with natural ingredients.

Pros: Organic and low in sodium.

Cons: The cost is about $1.00 more than other brands.

These broths are a great item to have in your pantry.

Healthy Times Holiday Baby Foods

Even babies can celebrate the season with special holiday foods. Healthy Times has several seasonal choices—Grandma’s Turkey Dinner, Sweet Potatoes, and Pumpkin Pie. Healthy Times baby foods are organic and free of soy, dairy, nut, egg, and gluten. They come in three stages:

Stage 1 Fruit & Vegetables: Single fruit and vegetables specially created for babies just beginning to eat solid foods.

Stage 2 Fruit & Vegetable Blends: Created to give babies variety and introduce them to new, exciting tastes.

Stage 3 Dinners: Main courses that provide babies with the nutrients needed for healthy growth and development.

Pros: Organic and free of all allergens.

Cons: Expensive

These foods are definitely for pampered babies, but might be fun for a grandmother to provide on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day.

Farmer’s Market Organic Pumpkin Pie Mix

What would the holidays be with-out pumpkin pie? Pumpkin pie is an American tradition that is hard to improve on unless you use organic pumpkin for your pie. Farmer’s Mar-ket Organic Pumpkin and Pumpkin Pie Mix contain no fat, trans fats, or

cholesterol and are good sources of fiber (2 to 4 g) and the disease-fight-ing antioxidant beta-carotene (40 to 380% DV). Each half-cup serving of organic pumpkin contains 50 calories, 10 g carbohydrates, and 6 mg sodium. The organic pumpkin pie mix has just 120 calories and 0 mg sodium.

A new product from Farmer’s Market that goes with the season is Organic Butternut Squash, a ready-to-use butternut puree perfect for soups, sauces, and a variety of other dishes. Now you can have butter-nut squash without the hassle of preparing it yourself.

Pros: Organic, fat free, low sodium, and a good source of fiber and vita-min A.

Cons: May be hard to find.

These are great products to have on hand for the holidays to make those traditional recipes.

10 Healthy Holiday Foods

©2007 Linda McDonald Associates, Inc., dba, SUPERMARKET SAVVY®, Houston, TX 77042, www.supermarketsavvy.com

Apples/Apple SauceApples are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, and boron, an important trace mineral. Eat the skin of the apple to get a potent flavonoid called quercitin, which helps prevent heart disease.

Tip: Look for unsweetened apple sauce to get the fiber without the sugar. Use apple sauce to replace some of the fat and use apple juice concentrate to replace sugar in baked goods. Bake apples with the skin or make Waldorf salad with the whole apple.

BeansGreen beans are naturally low in calories and are loaded with vitamin K, which helps protect your bones. They also are a good source of vitamins C and A.

Tip: Skip heavy sauces with this veggie. Try beans lightly tossed with olive oil and lemon. Prepare the typical green bean casserole with the lower-fat version of high fat ingredients, such as fat-free cream of mushroom soup and light butter.

CranberriesThere’s a substance in cranberries that helps prevent urinary tract infections by interfering with the ability of bacteria to adhere to cell membranes. Cranberries also contain a potentially cancer-preventing compound called ellagic acid. Cranberries are packed with vitamin C and contain a fair amount of dietary fiber and manganese.

Tip: Choose whole cranberries over jellied cranberry sauce and juice. Make a fresh, orange cranberry relish and get added benefit from the vitamin C in oranges. Dried cranberries are a great snack or can be added to salads.

Dark ChocolateChocolate is a concentrated source of flavanol antioxidants—plant substances that help decrease cholesterol. Chocolate also is high in calories, fat, and sugar.

Tip: Choose 70% cocoa or higher dark chocolate for the most flavonols and the least amount of fat and sugar. Chocolate-dipped strawberries are a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth at the holiday dessert table.

FigsFigs are a good source of dietary fiber, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and niacin plus they have a natural laxative effect.

Tip: Fig puree can be used as a fat substitute in recipes for baked goods. Figs are best eaten fresh and raw, but dried figs can be included in stuffing or in a fruit compote. Try chocolate-dipped fresh figs.

PecansHigh in protein and monounsaturated fats, they are also good sources of vitamin E and dietary fiber.

Tip: Either raw or roasted, pecans make a great snack in moderation. A small handful contains about 200 calories.

PumpkinThis rich, orange vegetable contains carotinoids for making vitamin A in the body and fighting free radicals. Pumpkin also is a good source of potassium and fiber.

Tip: Eat only the pumpkin portion of the pie and leave the crust to enjoy the rich pumpkin dessert without extra fat and calories. Make a lower-fat pumpkin pie by using an egg substitute and evaporated skim milk. Pureed pumpkin lends itself to healthy cooking by replacing the fat in baked goods.

TurkeyIn addition to being an excellent source of protein, turkey offers the least amount of fat per serving among all other meats, if you choose the white meat and pass on the skin.

Tip: Choose a fresh turkey that has not been injected with a sodium-based solution that increases the salt content. Natural turkeys contain no artificial flavors, food coloring, chemical preservatives, or other artificial ingredients. Check the ingredi-ent statement.

Whole-Grain StuffingPrepare stuffing with whole-grain bread for added fiber, vita-mins, and minerals. The new U.S. Dietary Guidelines encourage three servings of whole grains a day.

Tip: Rather than cooking stuffing inside of the turkey, cook the stuffing in a casserole dish in the oven. If you add the drippings from the turkey, be sure to skim the fat off the top of the drip-pings before using. This can be done easily by letting the drip-pings cool in the refrigerator or freezer. You can also add ice cubes, which the fat will stick to for easy removal. Rather than adding meat of giblets, replace half or all the meat with dried fruits such as cranberries, raisins, or apricots.

Yams/ Sweet PotatoesYams and sweet potatoes have as much beta-carotene as carrots. In addition they are a good source of potassium, vitamin C, and fiber.

Tip: Candied yams can be high in sugar and fat. Bake with a bit of brown sugar and whip with orange juice rather than butter. Try a baked sweet potato or yam and eat the skin for the most nutritional benefits.

Simple Harvest Multigrain Cereal

Quaker has a new, instant, multi-grain hot cereal made from whole-grain rolled oats, whole-grain rolled wheat, whole-grain rolled rye, rolled barley, and whole flax seed. Each 1.5-oz serving (one packet) of Quaker Simple Harvest pro-vides one full serving of whole grains (20 g); 4 g dietary fiber, including 1 g soluble fiber; 4 g protein; and only 150 to 160 calories.

Pros: Excellent source of whole grains and fiber.

Cons: The calories are high for a cereal (150 to 160).

These multi-grain, hot, instant cereals will provide a great start on cold mornings.

Wholesome Valley Hummus

Easy-to-use as a spread, dip, or sandwich topping, hummus is a has-sle-free food. Wholesome Valley Organic Humus is made with all-organic ingredients with no preservatives. In addition, it is certified kosher and contains no saturated or trans fats. Available flavors include Classic, Roasted Red Pepper, Garlic, and Spicy Chipotle. Calories for a 2-Tbsp serving range from 50 to 60 with a total fat of 3 to 3.5 g.

Pros: Organic, kosher, and no preservatives

Cons: The fat calories are 50% of the total calories, but the added fat is a canola/olive oil blend.

Find Wholesome Valley Hummus in the refrigerated section of the produce department. I enjoyed all the flavors, but especially liked the Roasted Red Pepper Hummus on pita bread.

Minute Maid Pomegranate Blueberry Juice Blend

Pomegranate is the ‘IN’ nutrient this year, and Minute Maid has added this flavor to their line of enhanced juices that also includes Minute Maid Multi-Vitamin, Minute Maid Active, and Minute Maid Heart Wise. Made from a blend of five juices, Minute Maid Pomegranate Blueberry Flavored 100% fruit juice blend is enhanced with 50 mg DHA Omega-3 per 8-oz serv-ing. It also contains choline, B12 (10% DV), and vitamins E (20% DV) and C (100% DV). The product states the structure/function claim “Helps nour-ish your brain and body with omega-3/DHA and 4 additional nutrients.”

Pros: Good-to-excellent source of nutrients that play a role in brain and nervous system health—choline, B12, vitamin E, vitamin C, and Omega-3/DHA. Does not have added sugars or artificial sweeteners.

Cons: The concentrated juices provide 29 g sugar—about 6 tsp—and 120 calories in an 8-oz serving.

The nutrients in this juice are beneficial.

Mr. Krispers Multi Seed Chips

Why are the quick snacks full of fat and calories, while the healthy ones are hard to find? Mr. Krispers produces a line of nutritious snack options that are made with whole-grains and do not contain any artifi-cial ingredients. Mr. Krispers Multi Seed Tortilla Chips are an excellent source of whole grains with 22 g of brown rice and corn per 1-oz serv-ing (about 16 chips). They have at least 50% less fat than regular fried tortilla chips (2.5 g vs 5 to 8 g) and contain no added sugars, additives, or artificial ingredients. The “multi-seeds” are sesame, black sesame, poppy, and flax seeds.

Pros: Wheat and gluten free. Excellent source of whole grains (22 g). Lower in fat than regular tortilla chips.

Cons: Contains 2.5 g fat per serving and only 1 g dietary fiber.

These multi-seed chips have a wholesome, crisp taste.

Nabisco Garden Harvest Chips

Nabisco has a new, better-for-you snack chip to help satisfy your sweet or savory senses—Garden Harvest Toasted Chips. Baked with 100% whole grain (16 g), these chips provide a half serving of fruits or vegetables, have 60% less fat than regular fried potato chips (3 to 4 g vs 8 to 10 g) and provide a good source of dietary fiber (3 g). They are also lower in sodium than regular chips (65 to 240 mg). All this in a 1-oz serv-ing of about 16 chips.

Varieties include Tomato Basil, Vegetable Medley, Apple Cinnamon, and Banana. The two vegetable varieties are higher in fat (3.5 g) and sodium (220 to 240 mg) than the fruit varieties.

Pros: An excellent source of whole grains (16 g), lower in fat (3 to 4 g). Provide half-serving of fruits or vegetables.

Cons: It is hard to limit the serving to just 16 chips. The calories and fat grams can add up if you eat more. The sodium is high in the Vegetable Medley (240 mg) and the Tomato Basil (220 mg).

Although the chips are crisp and tasty, this is not the best way to get the 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables recommended.

Orville Redenbacher's Lower Sodium Smart Pop

It is common knowledge that most snacks are too high in sodium. But lowering the sodium can also lead to tasteless foods. Recognizing that low sodium and great taste are not mutually exclusive, Orville Reden-bacher has recently lowered the sodium in their popcorn by 30% (340 to 240 mg). Look for the 94% fat-free variety that only has 2 g total fat in a 7.5 popped cup serving. In addition, corn is a great whole grain, and this product is 100% whole grain. In fact, this popcorn carries a ‘Heart Health’ claim—“Diets rich in whole grain and other plant foods, and low in saturated fats and cholesterol, may help reduce the risk of heart disease.”

Food Logos—are they helping or confusing?

Foreign Country Logos

The proliferation of symbols on foods is a worldwide phenomenon, with governments such as Britain and Sweden establishing logo systems that indicate how nutritious products are. The Swedish Keyhole symbol means that a product contains high levels of fiber and low levels of fat, sugar, and salt. The British ranking system relies on green, yellow, and red lights to characterize whether a food is low, medium, or high in fat, salt, and sugar. Tesco, Britain’s largest supermarket chain, has added percentage of Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA), similar to our % Daily Value, for various nutrients. The effect is that consumers have sent sales of products like Choco Snaps plummeting in favor of more healthful options.

Food Manufacturer Logos

A similar system, without the traffic light colors, was recently intro-duced to U.S. shoppers by Kellogg’s and General Mills. Kellogg’s Nutri-tion at a Glance can be found on ready-to-eat cereals. Look for a banner

on the top of the box that gives the information on four key nutrients—calories, fat, sodium, and sugar. Additionally, up to 2 nutrients can be added—fiber, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, D, and E. Besides the amount of each nutrient, a percent GDA is given for those nutrients that have a designated % Daily Value. Learn more.

To help make nutrition decisions easier, General Mills has added a Nutrition Highlights panel to their cereal boxes that high-lights key nutrients from the Nutrition Facts panel. They include the amount and % Daily Value for calories, saturated fat, sodium,

sugar, fiber, calcium, and calories. Learn more.

Other food companies have instituted food logos on products. For instance, Kraft has marked more than 500 of its better-for-you products with a Sensible Solutions logo. Sensible Solutions criteria require that qualifying products contain limited amounts of calories, fat, sodium, and sugar plus provide meaningful amounts of good-for-you nutrients like calcium, fiber, whole grain, protein, etc. Learn more about the Sensible Solutions criteria.

Similarly, Unilever has launched Eat Smart and Drink Smart logos that meet the Unilever’s Nutrition Enhancement Program’s criteria which are based on U.S. Dietary Guidelines. Learn more.

Many shoppers want to make smart and sensible food choices at the supermarket. They try to buy healthier products and stay away from nutritionally empty ones. Food companies, supermarkets,

and other organizations are implementing food logo and shelf tag programs to assist consumers in their decisions. But, are all these nutrition oriented logos on food products and tags on supermarket shelves helping or confusing consumers? The Food and Drug Association recently held a 2 day conference to study this move towards nutrition logos and to contemplate if the government should develop a univer-sal system similar to those being implemented in other countries.

PepsiCo has put the Smart Spot symbol that says “Smart Choices Made Easy” on more than 250 products across brand lines including Tropicana, Aquafina, Gatorade, and Baked Lay’s. Learn more.

Supermarket Logos and Shelf Tag Programs

Supermarkets are also offering logos to help consumers with their food choices. FMI’s Supermarket Trends for 2007 reports that almost half of all supermarkets provide some form of health-focused shelf tags (45.5%). Hannaford Supermarkets has the most comprehensive shelf tag program—Guiding Stars—launched over a year ago in its 158 supermar-kets in the Eastern US. The program awards 1 to 3 stars to items that range from a ‘good’ to ’better’ to ‘best nutritional value’ depending on a variety of nutritional criteria. Hanaford does not provide the specific criteria because they are awaiting a patent on the program.

Hannaford recently released data from the first 12 months of the program. Out of a total of more than 25,500 rated food items, more than one-quarter (28%) received 1, 2, or 3 Stars. The greatest change was in the packaged foods section of the store with those items rated with 1, 2, or 3 Stars growing 2 ½ times the rate of those without Stars. Learn more about the Guiding Star Program.

Other supermarket chains have implemented shelf tag programs and food logos on store brands. Wegman’s Supermarkets in the northeast provides Wellness Keys on their branded products that designate Glu-ten Free, High Fiber, Vegan, etc. Learn more.

Meijer Supermarkets in the Midwest provides Healthy Living shelf tags to help consumers identify products that are Vegetarian, Heart Healthy, Gluten Free, etc. Learn more.

Organizations Logos:

Besides food companies and supermarkets, other organizations are putting their mark on food products as well. I’m sure that you are famil-iar with the Whole Grain Council ‘Whole Grain Stamps’, the American Heart Association ‘Heart Check’, and the Produce for Better Health Foundation’s ‘Fruits & Veggies More Matters’ logo. In addition, there are also the MyPyramid logo, Organic logos, and Kosher logos. Is there any doubt that all these logos are confusing consumers? Will FDA develop a universal system? We will keep you informed.
