BY BeTh DULaneY ScoTTSo many people become anxious around the upcoming holiday season. Do I have enough money to buy gifts for my family? What am I going to wear to the office Christmas party? Will my Christmas cookies turn out just right? What will the New Year bring? This is similar to the stresses we all face around this time of the year including the character of Kelly and her family in the Coshocton Christian Tabernacle’s production of “One Quiet Night” which is to be performed Friday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. Kelly and her family have been caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season with Christmas plays, decorating the tree, preparing Christmas dinner and desserts, and attending parties. One night, Kelly has an accident and discovers not what Christmas is about, but who Christmas is about. “One Quiet Night” is back for its second year at Coshocton Christian Tabernacle, having premiered there in 2006. About 25 – 30 people make up the cast and crew including five or six drama actors and actresses, an ensemble, and crew. Volunteers at the church have also spent countless hours constructing and decorating the inside of the house where Kelly and her family live on the stage. When asked what the overall theme of the play is all about, Pastor Dan Keaton said, “To lay aside the hustle and bustle and to rediscover what Christmas is all about.” Although the play has a serious theme, there is much comedy throughout that both children and adults will enjoy. Adults will also relate to the holiday stress that Kelly and her family feel. “We want them [the audience] to rediscover Christmas,” said Pastor Keaton, “It’s really about Jesus. It’s not about a jolly man in a white suit. It’s about the birth of our Lord and about God’s gift to us. I hope they take away that, yes, we know life is crazy, but when it is crazy, remember who it’s really all about.” “One Quiet Night” will be performed Friday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. with a special performance by The White Gloves ministry, who started their ministry two years ago on Christmas. The event is free to the public and all are encouraged to come and take a break from the anxiety of the season and get back to what it’s really all about.

Get into the Christmas spirit at the Coshocton Baptist Church this weekend as they present their 5th annual Christmas production entitled, “One Christmas Day”. The play features six scenes of what a typical family experiences at Christmas time such as two sisters who haven’t seen each other in a while having a conversation on the phone about one coming home for Christmas this year and sharing memories of Christmas past, or a mother who has just come back from shopping and has found the perfect gift for someone she loves. The play follows a format of one scene, a narration of the scene, and then a scripture reading, tying the modern scene to biblical times. About 30 people from the church volunteer their time to bring this production to life and who have been tirelessly rehearsing since the beginning of September. There are five people in drama, three people on crew, a person using sign language, and the 18-member choir who sing from the living Christmas tree. Robin Walters, director of the play, said that her favorite memory of the production so far was when members of the church all came together and helped put up the huge Christmas tree, which features 5,000 blinking lights. “The first day that we put it up, having a lot of people at the church stay and help,” said Walters, “We had a big pizza party and then we all came and put it up. Just seeing the unity of everybody coming together and it was the first time the tree was as far along as it could be in one day. It actually looked like the Christmas tree. Normally there were just a
few people that would stay and we’d start working on it, but this year it was like the church just gathered together and we got it up really quick. Just seeing the unity and the love that’s been poured into it.” She went on to say that the theme of the play is not only the birth of Jesus, but also the coming together of family during the holiday season. Other people in the production recounted their happy memories of the production as well. “Just being able to spend time together as a church and working together as a church,” said Shawnda Shannon who plays one of the daughters, “It was great because everyone came together to help put the Christmas trees up and the decorations.”

Roscoe Village cheers on the holiday season with its annual Christmas Candle lighting Ceremony. Many shared in the tradition of lighting the Christmas tree and participated in lighting their own candle as “Silent Night” was heard throughout the village. Jim McClure, the executive director of Roscoe Village said, “This is not just a local tradition, but a kick-off to the holiday season that brings families from near and far.” The candle lighting tradition has been a part of Coshocton County since the early 70s. As many participants explained, “It’s the nostalgia of an old-fashioned Christmas which just takes you back in time.” This is what the season is all about, spending time with family and friends singing, sharing, and being a part of something that will last a lifetime. Throughout the day, guests enjoyed art with Santa, strolling carolers, candlelight tours, complimentary hot-mulled cider and cookies and many other holiday festivities. Gene Warman, of Warman Productions in Columbus told the story of “The Christmas Star.” The audience listened with anticipation as the tree was brought to life with bright white lights and a brightly lit star. Award-winning journalist, Neil Zurcher, served as the honorary candelighter. Zurcher lit his small candle from the large candle center piece located on center stage, then he began passing the flame to the choir and then it went on to the crowd, including the 2010 Canal Festival Princess, Mini Princess, and Mini King. The night and the crowd came alive while singing along with the Sisters of Salvation to the classic “Silent Night”. As in years past a local resident donated the tree that remains on display in the village throughout the holiday season. This year’s tree stood at a spectacular 35 feet tall and was donated by John & Carol Brill of Keene Township. The next candlelighting will be Saturday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m.

Audrey Selders, who plays the mother, said she liked, “Just being able to present the story of Christmas to the community.” Chuck Selders, who plays the father, said he enjoyed, “Seeing the younger people getting excited and getting involved in the church.” The Coshocton Baptist Church will present, “One Christmas Day” on Friday, Dec. 11 and Saturday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. Music starts at 6 p.m. and Sisters of Salvation will be providing music from 6:15 – 6:30 p.m. The play lasts about an hour.

fresh country airAt my family’s Christmas tree farm each year, I get the great pleasure of accompanying other families in the search for their perfect Christmas tree, a holiday tradition that has been enjoyed for five centuries. Little is known about the first decorated Christmas tree in Riga, Latvia in 1510, other than the tree was placed in the public marketplace and decorated by members of a merchants guild to honor the birth of Christ. A ceremony was held and the tree was burnt at its conclusion. A plaque now marks the spot where the world’s first Christmas tree stood. This year, Christmas tree growers from around the world are commemorating the 500 years of the beloved holiday tradition. “Christmas tree growers from Ohio are proud to be a part of this long and cherished Christmas tradition,” said Dave Reese, president of the Ohio Christmas Tree Association and an Ohio Farm Bureau member. “Many of the Christmas tree farms in the state will being doing special activities and promotions to commemorate this occasion. It is not every year you get to be a part of a 500-year anniversary.” At the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) Convention in North Carolina last August, trees were on display to demonstrate the various styles of decoration through each century of the Christmas tree tradition. Here is a summary of the display provided by the National Christmas Tree Association.
1500sThe first written record of the decorated Christmas tree comes from Riga, Latvia. In 1510, the men of the Merchants Guild decorated a tree with paper roses for the marketplace. The fir tree commemorated the Holy Child while the roses a symbol for the Virgin Mary. In 1530, there is a record from Alsace, France, that trees were sold in the marketplace and brought home. Laws limited the size of the trees to “eight shoe lengths,” a little over four feet.
1600sIn the churches of this time, apples were used to decorate evergreen trees as props for the “miracle plays”. The Christmas tree with apples symbolized the “Tree of Paradise” in the Garden of Eden; it was used as a means of teaching the Bible story, of good versus evil in paradise. The first record referencing the “Christmas Tree” to describe a decorated tree was in Strassburg, Alsace, 1604. This is recognized as a pivotal event in the history of the Christmas tree.

Edible ornaments became so popular that the trees were often referred to as “Sugar Trees”. In this century, the first accounts of lighted candles being used as decorations on Christmas trees came from France. A letter to a friend dated 1798 described the enchanting beauty of many candlelit trees seen in the houses of the times.
1800sThe Christmas tree was introduced in the United States by German settlers first as a tabletop size and soon became a floor-to-ceiling tree. In 1851 Christmas trees began to be sold commercially when Mark Carr hauled two ox sleds of evergreens into New York City. During the 1870s, blown glass ball ornaments from Lauscha, Germany, appeared as decorations. These evolved as chains of balls, toys and figures became a favoredAmerican tradition.
1900sThe first electric lights on a Christmas tree occurred at the home of Thomas Edison’s assistant, Edward Johnson, in 1882. President Grover Cleveland first used tree lights in the White House in 1895. In 1903, electric lights referred to as “switchboard lights” were sold in New England; they did not become widely popular until the 1930s. Under President Calvin Coolidge, the first annual lighting of the White House Christmas tree began in 1923. To commemorate this momentous anniversary, the NCTA released commemorative cards and ornaments featuring the original artwork of Jesse Barnes and J. Wecker Frisch for the occasion. In addition, a special ceremony will be held at the site of the world’s first decorated Christmas tree.
