Have you started Christmas shoppingyet? Well, children ages 3 to 12 are en-couraged to shop this year at the KiddieStore at Shepherd of the Valley LutheranChurch, tentatively set for Dec. 12 from 10a.m. to 2 p.m.

Children may shop for the whole familyfor under $20 at the sixth annual KiddieStore. The volunteer staff tending thestore encourages no more than $20 bebrought by a child to spend for gifts, andparents may bring the children and waitin the foyer of the church.

“It’s a fun way for the children to shopfor family,” Sheila Iszler, Kiddie Storechair, said. “The gifts are wrapped and aname tag included – so all packages areready to place underneath the Christmastree at home.”

Children are encouraged to bring inage-detailed list of whom they need to

purchase gifts for – such as a parent, sib-lings and grandparents. This way thechild’s money is to be used for “more-quality” gifts for family members, andhelpers will know how to help the childsearch.

All gift lists will be filled regardless ofwhether the child has enough money inhis or her pocket. Volunteers are greatlyappreciated to help, and it’s not necessaryto be a member of the church to partici-pate with the project.

This year’s funds will be donated to theRichland County Food Bank.

The Kiddie Store is accepting dona-tions for new or gently used gifts for allages, and also if anyone would like tohelp with wrapping – please come. Formore information on the Kiddie Store ordonation giving, call Iszler at 488-5075 orShirley Valnes at 488-3641.

Gifts from the Heart campaign inneed of ham, turkey donationsBY DENIECE SCHWABSIDNEY HERALD

Stores are beginning to look a lot likeChristmas. Shelves are stocked with orna-ments, and the garland is ready to behung, but there are many things to do be-fore the tree is decorated and the fireplacemantle is filled stockings.

For some people, there won’t even be atree – let alone garland to hang or awrapped present underneath the tree.Earlier this summer, the Richland CountyChristmas Coalition began its campaign,“Gifts from the Heart,” when a couplehours were set aside to bury Miss Home-spun.

For those two hours, Miss Homespuncouldn’t find her way out of the pile ofgifts brought in by people of this commu-nity. Last year, the Richland CountyChristmas Coalition and Food Bankserved 96 families including 227 children. Each family food box is filled with every-thing to make a Christmas dinner, includ-ing a ham or turkey.

The organization that in years past has

stepped forward to donate money for theham or turkey has been cut of funds forthis particular project to $500.

Is there an organization or an individ-ual in the community that would like tohelp in purchasing or giving at least $900to purchase hams and turkeys? ContactHelen Schmitt at the Richland CountyCoalition Against Domestic Violence of-fice at 433-7421.

As the decorations come out for Christ-mas, there will also be “Gifts from theHeart” tags in which people in the com-munity may purchase what is listed on thetag. Once the tag has been filled, gifts maybe taken to any Edward Jones Financialadvisors Enid Huotari, Jerry Hughes orNick Lonski offices or other locations intown.

These gifts will be brought together for a“Gifts from the Heart” shopping day (at nocost to our local shoppers) Dec. 19, from 7a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge in Sid-ney. The main concern for this project atthis time is that the coalition finds some-one to provide the ham and turkeys.

BY BILL VANDER WEELESIDNEY HERALD

Between the Big Bucks program,Christmas Cash and later store hours, there are plenty of reasons to shop in Sid-ney this holiday season.

“For a big part of northeastern Mon-tana, Sidney is the closest place whereyou have a big variety of shopping,” WadeVanEvery, executive director for the Sid-ney Area Chamber of Commerce andAgriculture, said. “And you can get servic-es after you buy something.”

The Big Bucks program is one of the ad-vantages of shopping in Sidney. Individu-als go through a loan application proce-dure at local financial institutions for asmall fee of $15. Interest-free loans for sixmonths are given to successful applicantsfrom $500 to $1,000. The money can bespent at Sidney Chamber businesses thathave signed up for the program. The threeparticipating financial institutions areStockman Bank, 1st Bank and the Rich-land Federal Credit Union.

Because of the struggling economy, BigBucks may be larger than ever during thisholiday shopping season.

VanEvery notes one business told him

that they no longer are offering their fi-nancing plan but instead urge customersto look at the Big Bucks program.

“There are applicants already in at thebanks, and things are off to a good start,”VanEvery said.

Christmas Cash is also a popular cam-paign as residents can sign up at the 48participating businesses with a chance towin $1,000 in Chamber Bucks. Drawingswill be held at each business on Dec. 17.Those names will then be in the drawingon Dec. 18 for one $500 and two $250 Cham-ber Bucks winners.

As part of its Shop Sidney campaign, the Chamber is designating the Sundaysof Dec. 6, Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 for business-es to be open for holiday shopping. In ad-dition, businesses are asked to stay openlater during the Christmas week, Dec. 21,22 and 23.

Plenty of fun is scheduled for Nov. 27.Activities start with Centre Theatre hav-ing a matinee movie at 1 p.m. Santa thenarrives downtown at 2:30 p.m. and is avail-able for photos at the Village Square Mall. The Christmas Stroll starts at 4 p.m. andthe Parade of Lights begins at 7 p.m.
