BAINBRIDGE ISLAND | 6

Spend the holidays in our winter wonderland The holiday season is a unique experience on the North Kitsap Penin-

sula and on Bainbridge Island .

Take a horse-drawn carriage ride in downtown Poulsbo. The decorat-ed storefronts add to the Scandinavian flavor of downtown. You’ll find

unique gifts of locally made items — art, books, foods — many with a Scandinavian flair. Enjoy a Scandinavian Christmas at Jule Fest,

featuring a Christmas tree lighting, music, a bonfire, and the arrival of the Lucia bride and her Viking escorts.

Let your imagination take flight at the holiday lighting at Kingston’s Mike Wallace Park. Enjoy a Victorian Christmas in Port Gamble.

Tour elaborately decorately homes in Hansville. Watch a holiday stage production in Poulsbo’s intimate Jewel Box Theatre or Port Gamble’s

historic 19th century theater.

Holiday concerts, bazaars and fairs in Hansville, Indianola, Kings-ton, Poulsbo and Suquamish round out the fun. Bazaars and fairs are great places to find unique gifts. Check the holiday calendars for each community in this magazine. If you’re looking for some new holiday

memories, they’re waiting to be made close to home.

Bainbridge Island offers a whirlwind of events and holiday fun. Pick up a wreath from the Bainbridge Kiwanis Club; cruise through the Bethlehem Experience at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church, with its

drive-through re-creation of Bethlehem; let the children take a plunge at the holiday carnival at the pool; watch the Christmas boat parade;

and find that unique gift in the holiday wonderland that is downtown Winslow.

The Bainbridge Island Fire Department’s holiday music truck will make the rounds. The Winter Studio Tour offers gift-able works by

island artists, as does Christmas in the Country .

Add something to the Giving Trees downtown and visit Helpline House with a donation. Join the Community Tree Lighting ceremony on Madrone Lane; sing with Ovation!, the Figgy Pudding Peddlers,

and the Bainbridge High Band. Santa will light the tree.

This season, make holiday memories close to home.

The staff of the Bainbridge Island Review and North Kitsap Herald wish you the very best this holiday season and always.

Creative gift ideas for the art lover on your listBY LUCIANO MARANO

[email protected]

This year, give the gift that the aesthete on your list will enjoy all year long: local art.

A work of art, be it a painting, print, sculpture, jewelry or something else, is a special, individual gift that you can’t just run down to the mall and pick up. It says to the

recipient that you took the time to consider what they would like, and that you sought it out with them in mind.

Wait. Is this sounding like a lot of work already? Relax, help is one the way.

Luckily for the art-minded shopper, our corner of Kitsap offers a variety of galleries, cooperatives and specialty shops for unique, regional works of art in every medium

and style, which guarantees that you can find something unique and beautiful in any price range, without having to hop a ferry to the city.

The list below is by no means a complete directory of the art-buying venues in the area, but it does offer a variety of places to start hunting for the masterpiece that your gift’s

recipient will treasure.

Pictured above:

The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art store boasts a superb collection of artistic gift ideas including art books, jewelry, toys and more.

The Wildernest 310 Winslow Way E, Bainbridge Island 206-780-8527 www.wildernestoutdoorstore.com

It doesn’t matter how small of a stocking you’re trying to fill, because items sold at The Wildernest are made to be lightweight, compressible and multi-functioning. Shoppers can choose from sexy travel underwear, stylish base layers or headbands that double as neck gaiters for the outdoorsy stocking.

Calico Cat Toy Shoppe 104 Winslow Way W, Bainbridge Island 206-842-7720 www.calicocattoys.com

Calico Cat Toy Shoppe has been providing everything from board games to stuffed animals and coloring books for 27 years. Its three-room cavalcade of toys is locally-owned and operated by fourth-generation Bainbridge islanders. Among its shelves of obvious Christmas tree gifts, is a spectrum of stocking stuffers perfect for little ones ages 3 and up.

Winslow Drug 290 Winslow Way E, Bainbridge Island 206-842-2652

Winslow Drug isn’t just any pharmacy. It’s also the town trinket shop. Shoppers looking for good White Elephant ideas and stocking stuffers would not be disappointed. For $10, a deck of UNO, Scrabble Slam! or MAD GAB will keep game night interesting for adults and children alike. For less than $10 fill the kids in the family’s stockings with toy bugs and kaleidoscopes, because when did kaleidoscopes and toy bugs stop being fun? Never.

Who said that the good gifts end with the Christmas tree? Be it something useful or fun, Kitsap offers boutiques and shops that can make your stocking stuffers the cherry on top to a good holiday season. With just a short drive or

walk to town, shoppers have access to local buys that will make last year’s bag of candy look square.

Shops like Calico Cat Toy Shoppe and Beachside Gifts are not just for tourists. They, along with an assortment of other storefronts, have the extra layer of

goodness to make the holiday season extra special for everyone in the family. From kitchen gadgets and outdoorsmen gear to funky socks, card games and

Hot Wheels, Kitsap has everything you’re looking for to make the stocking an extension of the Christmas tree.

Zamboanga 112 Winslow Way W, Bainbridge Island 206-780-2869 www.zambowear.com

Wacky is a fitting descriptor for Zamboanga. Here, shoppers can find a whole wall of socks — some with illustrations of mermaids and others hedgehogs — and a rack of space-themed watches that aren’t limited to one season of the year but can dress up every outfit in the closet.

Beachside Gifts 18804 Front St. NE, Poulsbo 360-598-4980 www.beachsidegiftspoulsbo.com

The holidays aren’t right without a good onesie. Look no more, Beachside Gifts has them all. From camouflage onesies with sayings like, “Buck Naked” and “Deariaire” to more all-encompassing styles like a Christmas-themed pajama telling its admirers to “Lighten Up” or a red plaid onesie that notes its but-ton backside flap opens to “Bear Cheeks.”

The Curious Child 18925 Front St. NE, Poulsbo 360-930-8519

Whether your child is still learning how to walk or is on to coloring in the lines, there’s something for everyone at The Curious Child. It’s also the place for all the best Hot Wheels cars and pack-n-go activity books.

Kitchen Karousel 18846 Front St. NE, Poulsbo 360-697-4006 www.kitchenkarousel.com

Who said stockings were just for children? Impress the cook in the family, with Kitchen Karousel’s stocking-sized gadgets. From pepper corers and jar keys (yes, a gadget that will open even the toughest of jars) to crab mallets, fondue forks and “seafood doohickeys,” there’s a lot one can buy for under $10.

Tips: make ahead as it tastes best after a few days. Freezes well. Tastes great on leftover turkey sandwiches.

It’s a wonderful feeling, avoiding the pre-holiday stress by shopping early.

Having all that gift buying done in July and the holiday meals planned out can

give you a little you-time.

Yes, kick your feet up and catch up on those shows you have recorded on your

digital video recorder. There are so many story twists to keep track of, you

will soon forget about all the people you will be responsible for feeding in a

few days time.

Go ahead, lose yourself in the flicker of flames from the fireplace. You’re nice

and toasty and don’t have to worry about the holiday chaos out there on

the wet roads.

A commercial catches your eye and you glance back to the television.

“… There’s only two days left before the holidays are upon us,” the voice from

the television is telling you.

Ahhh. But you don’t have to worry about that. You purchased gifts for

everyone except… OMG.

Just like that, you’re out on the same wet road you were so happy to be off of just minutes before. Let the last-minute

shopping begin.

36 tis the season 2014

The weather is cold. Heat is a necessary but additional expense. Money is stretched thin, putting pressure on a family’s ability to meet monthly expenses. It’s the holiday season, a time when need is greatest in our communities. When you give during the holiday season, you make a difference in the lives of others.Consider the gift of giving this season. Your reward: knowing the world is a better place because of you. When someone asks you what you want for a gift, consider asking for a donation for a favorite cause. Some families choose a cause to give to in lieu of a gift for themselves. Giving, by the way, doesn’t have to be monetary. Consider a gift of your time. “You won’t know the name of the person or family you helped, but you might pass them on the street one day — someone able to smile again from the support you provided, someone with one less overwhelming concern that month,” ShareNet executive director Mark Ince once wrote. “You won’t know their name, but that help will have reached them just the same, with incredible speed and right in your own backyard. You haven’t just made a donation, you’ve made a difference.”Mary Nader of North Kitsap Fishline said, “There is some inexplicable reward that comes when you step out of your own needs and take care of others. Something happens — that sense of peace, the feeling that you’re doing something about the problem. When you can take an action locally and you’ve done what you can, you feel better, knowing that you’ve impacted a life.”Several organizations provide an opportunity to make a big difference locally. These organizations are part of the local safety net, and chances are good that any gift you give will benefit someone you know. POULSBO LIONS/RAAB FOUNDATION BELLRINGER FUNDMoney raised by the Poulsbo Lions/Raab Foundation Bellringer Fund provides local residents with emergency housing, help avoiding eviction, assistance with utility bills and medical co-payments, and vouchers for gas. Grants are administered by North Kitsap Fishline and St. Vincent de Paul. The Poulsbo Lions/Raab Foundation Bellringer Fund is different than the Bellringer Fund administered by the Kitsap Sun; the Poulsbo

Lions/Raab Foundation Bellringer Fund serves only North Kitsap. It was founded in the 1940s by Frank and Mabel Raab as a way for neighbors to help each other during emergencies. The fund helps at least 300 families a year. In addition, the fund supplies Christmas food baskets to 100 local families.TO GIVE: P.O. Box 1244, Poulsbo, WA 98370. Donations are accepted year-round for the fund, and are tax-deductible. HELPLINE HOUSEHelpline House was founded in the 1960s as a food bank, but evolved into a community-funded non-profit agency providing a full range of services.Basic services are provided cost-free to those in need. Needs are defined broadly and are not always financial.Helpline House operates a food and clothing bank; provides social work, advocacy services and a counseling program; offers a monthly legal clinic with Kitsap Legal Services; and makes medical equipment available on loan. Helpline House social workers assess each client’s crisis needs; help them access emergency funds; and coordinate services with key agencies, including Kitsap Mental Health, the YWCA A.L.I.V.E. domestic violence program, Housing Solutions and Kitsap Community Resources.Social workers also help older residents access senior services, assist them with prescription drug plans, and connect them with resources that help them remain independent while growing older in this community.TO GIVE: 282 Knechtel Way NE, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110. www.helplinehouse.orgSHARENET NEIGHBOR AIDShareNet, a non-profit, operates a food bank, a clothing bank, and a program that makes nutritious food available for school children on weekends. “Among the four area schools, 100 school kids are served every week during the year,” ShareNet executive director Mark Ince said. Wolfle Elementary School students receive food during summer as well.ShareNet also assists families and individuals facing eviction or needing help keeping their utilities on.ShareNet serves Eglon, Hansville, Indianola, Kingston, Little Boston, Port Gamble, and a portion of Poulsbo and Suquamish. Each

donation to ShareNet’s Neighbor Aid campaign supports efforts to fight hunger and need in those communities. The majority of the people who use ShareNet’s services are the working poor — people unemployed or under-employed, Ince said. Elderly residents living on a fixed income also visit ShareNet, as well as people with disabilities or living with illnesses.Ince estimates ShareNet will have provided more than 12,000 service instances — the number of times a person or family is helped — by the end of the year. That number would be an increase of at least 5 percent over the previous year. ShareNet’s annual budget is about $150,000, so Neighbor Aid makes a difference. “Neighbor Aid enjoys the support of hundreds of local individuals, businesses, service clubs and schools, all coming together through ShareNet to help hungry people in our community,” Ince said. “Your support, whether time, money or service, ensures ShareNet can continue to operate. If you met our clients directly, they would tell you themselves how grateful they are. We extend that gratitude toward you.”TO GIVE: ShareNet, 6061 United Road, Kingston, WA 98346. Mailing address: P.O. Box 250, Kingston, WA 98346. Online: www.sharenetfoodbank.org.NORTH KITSAP FISHLINE & EMERGENCY SERVICESThe economy may seem to be getting better, but the need in North Kitsap Fishline’s area of service has not diminished. According to Nader, 100-110 households visited Fishline each day in 2013; that number this year is 130-140. “The high water mark is more than 160 this year, and it used to be 120,” she said. Fishline operates a Food Bank on 787 NW Liberty Lane (at Viking Avenue); the Second Season Thrift Store on 18825 Anderson Parkway; and Second Season Home Store, which sells gently used furniture and home decor items, on 18916 3rd Ave. NE. Fishline provides grocery delivery service for homebound clients, and a weekend food-backpack program for children who may not otherwise receive enough food when not in school.Fishline provides on-site registration for SNAP Food Benefits, referrals for free financial and employment counseling, and bus tokens for people needing to get to and from jobs,

interviews and medical appointments.Fishline has several programs to help fend off homelessness. Fishline can help eligible clients who have difficulty paying all of the up-front fees when renting a new place to live, and has a rent assistance program to help people who have been served with an eviction notice.Fishline provides one-time rental and mortgage assistance for those experiencing financial crisis. Its home-share program pairs home owners at risk of foreclosure with people looking for a room to rent; the program gets the homeowner some help making the house payment, and the renter a place to live until his or her circumstances improve. Fishline can also help people faced with utility disconnection.Fishline works with local motels and other venues to provide from two to five nights of emergency shelter. Another program provides a safe parking location for single women who are temporarily living in their vehicles.Fishline also connects clients with credit counseling and financial education, free legal assistance, and assistance with medical and dental care.

TO GIVE: North Kitsap Fishline, 787 NW Liberty Lane, Poulsbo, WA 98370. Online: www.nkfishline.orgKINGSTON FOOD BANKThe Kingston Food Bank, 26102 Illinois Ave., serves about 50 families a week, mostly in the downtown area. Its clients are older, or homeless, and mostly pedestrian. Besides food, the Food Bank also provides school supplies to local students in September, operates a clothing bank, and has hygiene kits for people who are homeless.A recent bequest from the late Michael Szymanski covers the Food Bank’s rent for at least a few years, meaning the Food Bank can concentrate its resources and time on meeting local needs, rather than raising money to keep a roof over its head. The Food Bank’s hours are noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. The phone numbers are 360-297-4861 and 360-297-7100.Food Bank supporters include The Pizza Factory, which donates ice; The Grub Hut, which donates fruits and vegetables; and The Borrowed Kitchen, which donates bread.

TO GIVE: Kingston Food Bank, P.O. Box 323, Kingston, WA 98346. ONE CALL FOR ALLWhen you give through Bainbridge Island’s One Call For All, you can choose among 86 local non-profit organizations. One hundred percent of your donation goes directly to the non-profit you designate. One Call For All was established in 1960 and over the last 10 years has distributed more than $8.9 million to non-profit organizations. Those organizations serve the community in many ways. Among the Bainbridge and Kitsap causes that benefit from One Call for All:Arts & Humanities, Community Outreach & Enrichment, Emergency Services, Environment & Recreation, Health & Human Services, Schools & Early Childhood Education, Youth Services & Organizations, Off-Island Organizations serving Bainbridge and KitsapTO GIVE: For a list of partner organizations — alphabetical and by category — go to www.onecallforall.org.

Stay Healthy and Fit During the Holiday Season

The holidays are supposed to be a time for celebration, family, fun and traditions. But, the holidays also bring stress, little sleep and over indulgence on food. Much of our celebrating revolves around food, shopping, parties, being tempted by treats everywhere you turn and not having enough time for exercising or taking care of yourself.

Remember walking is an exercise you can do anywhere. It helps alleviate stress and burns calories during an otherwise hectic season.
