¾ yd. white polar fleece Two 2” orange pompoms Fourteen ¾“ black buttons Four ¾“ light blue buttons 3 skeins medium blue pearl cotton or craft thread Permanent fabric adhesive Scissors, Ruler

Snowman Hat and Scarf

Make the Scarf: 1. Cut a 10” x 54 “ rectangle from polar fleece. 2. Glue an orange pom pom about 5” from one end of the scarf for the snowman’s nose. Glue two buttons above the nose for eyes and five buttons below for the mouth. 3. To make the cheeks, cut through the loops at both ends of one skein of pear cotton. Remove the labels and save two strands from the skein. Cut the rest of the skein into three 2” bundles. Note: Set one bundle aside for another project. Wrap a long strand around the center of one 2” bundle and tie a tight knot (see Figure A). Trim the ends. Repeat with the other bundle. Fluff the bundles into circles and glue them to the cheeks. Glue a blue button to the center of each circle. Make the Hat: 1. Measure the head of the person the hat is intended for around the widest part. Cut the fleece 13” wide and as long as your head measurement plus ½“ for the overlap. To make the pompom, make 3” cuts along one long side of the rectangle, 1” apart (see Figure b). 2. Overlap the short ends of the rectangle ½“ and glue them together, forming a tube (see Figure c). 3. Cut a 15” piece of pearl cotton and wrap it tightly a few times around the hat at the base of the cuts. Tie a knot (see Figure d). Trim the thread and adjust the gathers. 4. Fold up the bottom of the hat 1” for a brim and glue in place, if desired. Follow steps 2 and 3 of “Make the Scarf” above to make the thread cheeks and glue on the features.

Styrofoam balls: 6-inch; 5-inch; 4-inch; 2½-inch; Two 2-inch

Two-Part iridescent acrylic ball ornament: 80mm and 100mm

Spray adhesive for Styrofoam Fleece: 2½-inch x 29-inch strip, color or your

choice in plaid Acrylic Paint: Orange and color to match fleece Wire: 18 gauge, 36 inches (color to match

fleece) Buttons: two 5/8” flat, black Twigs: two 6-inch pieces Pencil with eraser, serrated knife, metal spoon,

paintbrush, ruler, cosmetic blush, pencil, cardboard box, scratch paper

Snowman Candy Dish

1. To form a flat bottom surface, use serrated knife to cut a 4-inch diameter circle

slice from 6-inch foam ball. Sit on table, flat side down. 2. Using one half of large ornament (100mm), turn over so flat side is down and press edge into top center of 6-inch foam ball forming an impression. Use spoon along impression edges to carefully hollow out a rounded area for ornament half to fit into (Note: In order to have a rim around the ornament half, it may be necessary to trim a small amount from top of foam ball so it is flush with ornament half.) 3. Repeat process, cutting a 2½-inch diameter circle slice from 5-inch foam ball. Similarly hollow out a rounded area for small ornament (80mm) half. To form a flat bottom surface, cut a 1½-inch diameter circle slice from 4-inch foam ball for head. 4. With flat sides, down, place balls side-by-side on table. To form flat “gluing” surfaces between balls, cut 2-inch diameter circles, one from 4-inch ball, two from 5-inch ball and one from 6-inch ball. Placing one ball at a time into cardboard box, spray cut sides with spray adhesive for Styrofoam and attach balls together as shown. Insert twigs into sides of center foam ball for arms, as shown. 5. For ear muffs, cut 2½-inch foam ball in half. Gently roll each half on table along cut edges, forming a rounded edge. Use spoon to hollow out a small amount of foam from backs of earmuffs so they conform to shape of head. Paint earmuffs with two coats of paint to match fleece color. Let dry. 6. For nose, cut a cone shape from 2-inch foam ball. Gently roll nose on table or between fingers to form carrot shape. Paint nose with two coats of orange. Let dry. For cheeks, cut two 1¾-inch diameter circles from remaining 2-inch foam ball. Apply a coat of blush to cheeks.

3 plain round boxes (5-inch, 7-inch & 9-inch diameter) Acrylic paint: White Buttons, black: 2 medium size; 5 large size; 5-7 small Orange bumpy pipe cleaner Child-size mittens Infant-size hat Scrap of cloth for scarf 2½ feet of string Paintbrushes, hot glue gun & glue sticks

7. Use eraser end of pencil to make an indentation in face for nose to fit snugly into. Apply spray adhesive to backs of earmuffs, nose, cheeks and buttons (for eyes). Press into place on head, as shown. Coil a 36-inch length of wire around pencil leaving a 1-inch straight tail on each end. Insert a straight tail under top of each earmuff. 8. For scarf, cut a 2½-inch x 29-inch strip of plaid fleece and fringe ends by cutting 2-inch slits, about ¼-inch apart. Wrap scarf around neck and tie off to one side. Tips: To prevent over-spray from getting on work space, place item inside cardboard box, on it side. Cover bottom with scratch paper and spray inside box. Remove scratch paper and replace with new sheets, as needed. Experiment with nozzle setting before applying adhesive to surface, based on size of item being sprayed. Hold can closer to smaller items. After spraying, allow adhesive to become tacky 1-2 minutes before attaching to surface. For attaching most light weight items, it’s usually not necessary to spray both surfaces. Test on a small sample prior to beginning project. There is a generous “open time” that allows for repositioning, as needed, before bond sets.

Stack-A-Snowman

Paint the 3 round boxes white. Let the paint dry, then use hot glue to attach a button mouth and eyes to the smallest box and a row of large buttons to each of the 2 larger boxes, leaving room for the box tops. Cut a tapered section from an orange bumpy pipe cleaner and glue it in place for a nose. For hands, tape child-size mittens to the ends of a 2½-foot string and tuck the center portion of the string inside the medium-size box before putting on the lid. Stack the boxes (do not glue), then dress your snowman with an infant-size hat and a scarf made from a scrap of cloth. At the end of the season, the snowman parts nest inside the largest box for storage.

3 lunch size brown paper bags One 3-inch diameter Styrofoam ball One 9-inch piece green crepe paper ribbon One 19-inch piece red crepe paper ribbon Spanish moss One roll gold star garland 2 dried floral sprigs (1 white and 1 green) 1 roll thin, flexible craft wire 2 cardboard strips (8-inch x 2-inch) newspaper to stuff bag (body of angel)

Paper Bag Angel

1. Open one paper bag and sit it upright on your work surface. 2. Cut 2 strips of cardboard 8-inch x 2-inch. Fold the pieces of cardboard to match the corners of the brown bag. Fit them inside the bottom of the paper bag on your work surface to create a strong base for your angel. 3. Stuff the bag with crumpled newspaper within 2” of the top of the lunch bag. This will be the body of the angel. 4. Loosely gather the paper bag above the newspaper you stuffed into the paper bag. Wrap the thin, flexible craft wire around the gathered area twice, cut the piece from the roll and twist the ends together. Fold the ends back toward the wire you already wrapped around the gathered area. 5. Carefully fold the top 2” of the brown paper bag over the wire you wrapped around the gathered area without ripping the bag. Just fold slowly and carefully and it is possible. 6. Cut open one side and the end of the second paper bag. Wrap the large piece around the Styrofoam ball and twist the ends below the ball. Wrap a piece of wire around the twisted paper at the base of the Styrofoam ball to keep the twisted brown paper in place. Cut the piece from the roll. Cut off the excess paper bag about an inch below the wire. 7. Squeeze a line of hot glue just inside the opening of the paper bag where you folded the ends over the wire. Quickly press the brown paper wrapped Styrofoam ball into it. Hold briefly in place to secure. 8. Separate an amount of Spanish moss you want to us for the hair. You should have enough to frame the face and cover the turned down edge at the back of the paper bag. Squeeze thin lines of glue from the front of the head to the back except for the face

14

area. Press the Spanish moss quickly into the glue, it hardens fast so you have little time to arrange the hair once you’ve squeezed on the glue. Make sure it is covering the folded edge at the back. Squeeze a little more glue under the Spanish moss at the back to make sure it is attached to the head but leave some hanging to give your angel the appearance of long hair flowing at the back. 9. Cut a 10” piece of star garland from the roll for the halo. Make sure you have a large star with at least nine small stars in the 10” length. Arrange it in a circle on the Spanish moss hair with the large star at the front. Once you have the stars arranged as you would like them, squeeze a small drop of glue on each star one at a time and press the stars back into the glue to secure them to the Spanish moss hair. 10. Cut 2 strips of brown paper bag 3-inches wide X the length of the paper bag. Twist the strips into roughly a 5-inch length. Cut and wrap a 3-inch length of the craft wire around one end of each strip you twisted. 11. Squeeze a small amount of hot glue on the right side of the paper bag, underneath the folded over edge to the right of where the Styrofoam ball head is situated. Hold the wire wrapped end briefly in place until secure. Repeat the process using the other piece of twisted paper, this time to the left of where the Styrofoam ball head is situated. Hold the wire wrapped end briefly in place until secure. 12. Bend the arms towards the middle in a curve and squeeze a small drop of glue between the two pieces of paper where they meet. Hold briefly to secure but be careful you don’t burn your fingers because the glue may squeeze out past the paper. Squeeze a generous drop of hot glue underneath the middle of the two arms on the body of the angel and press the arms into the glue. Hold briefly to secure. 13. Cut a 9-inch long piece of green crepe paper ribbon. Form two loops and leave 2 inches for the ends hanging down. Hold the bow together in the middle with one hand and wrap the craft wire around the middle a few times with your other hand. Cut off the piece form the roll and make sure the end is wrapped around the middle. Cut the ends of the ribbon in 2 peaks with a point in the middle (like the tip of an arrow). 14. It is best to lay the angel face up on your work surface while gluing things on the front because it will be less likely the items you are gluing will shift while your work with them. Squeeze a small drop of hot glue on the middle of the arms where the hands meet. Press the 2 small pieces of dried floral material into the hot glue. Next, squeeze a generous amount of glue on top of the stems. Press the middle of the ribbon into the glue. You need to do this quickly because the hot glue hardens quickly. Hold the ribbon briefly in place to secure. Cut a small gold star from your garland. Squeeze a small amount of hot glue in the center of the bow and press a small star form the garland into it. 15. After the green ribbon is complete, it is time to make the red crepe paper ribbon bow and glue it on. Turn your angel over so the angel is now face down on your work surface. Cut a 19 inch piece of red crepe paper ribbon. Make two loops in the red ribbon leaving ends hanging that measure 5 inches each. Wrap a piece of craft wire

15

around the middle several times, cut off the piece form the roll and wrap the end around the bow. Squeeze a generous amount of glue just below the folded over edge and press the middle of the bow into it. Hold briefly to secure. The loops of the bow should be touching the folded over edge of the paper bag. Cut the ends on a diagonal with the inner edge tips touching the bottom of the bag. 16. Cut a large star from the garland. Squeeze a generous amount of hot glue in the center of the bow and press the large star into it. Hold briefly to secure. Let dry.

Cute Cracker Holder Start by folding one edge of a square napkin over 3/4 –inch to an inch about five times to the center of the napkin. Do the same with the opposite edge until the folded edges meet in the center. Tuck both short ends underneath so the meet in the middle. Separate the folds to create an opening for the crackers and arrange them inside. Suggested uses: This idea comes in handy when you can’t fin a small basket to hold crackers that accompany an appetizer – or you forget to take on along to a potluck. You can also use this in-a-hurry holder for slices of cocktail rye, breadsticks, min muffins or biscuits.

1 small plastic pill box with 7 compartments for each day of the week 7 small trinket and thoughtful gifts Red or green tissue paper

Pill Box Treasures This craft is a wonderful gift to give kids or a special person before Christmas. For each of the seven days before Christmas, the recipient is allowed to open the corresponding day’s compartment. In each compartment, a special little gift awaits them! (Note: put a little star on Christmas sticker on the day’s compartment from which they are to start.) When choosing the pill box, try to pick a red or green one. If these are not available, then pick a white or clear one. Open all seven compartments of the pill box. Cut small square pieces of tissue that will be large enough to wrap the trinkets in and enough layers of it so you cannot see the trinket through it. Wrap each of the trinket gifts separately, and place each one into it’s own separate compartment….and voila!….a special little gift to give. Following are some ideas for older children. Of course modify them or be inventive for adult gift giving! Ideas for the compartments:

Little hair barrettes Bath oil balls or shapes Hair elastics Small candy Necklace Erasers Bracelet Fancy paper clips Earrings Butterfly hair clip stickers

Bad Day Box

A Bad Day Box is a box or container that is filled with things that make you (if it’s for yourself) or whoever you give it to, happy. When the person you give this box to has had one-of-those-days at the office, or with the kids, or if you want a gift that will be used over and over again, this little box is the answer! What kind of box to use: a large shoe box, popcorn container or cookie tin or a good, strong sized box that can hold a lot of “happy” things! What to put into the box: Favorite movie, favorite CD, a poem or a story, pictures that bring a smile, notebook that can be used to vent frustrations, bubble bath, small scented candle, herbal relaxing tea, a nice perfume, candy Box instructions: This box is intended to cheer up the recipient. It’s something special that should be kept hidden but easily accessible when “one of those days” get too hard. Just remember to restock as needed!

18 gauge copper wire or any wire you may have

Assorted pretty beads Needle nose pliers Glue Something to bend wire on to make

hook

Pack of gum Craft foam: white & black Hot glue gun & glue sticks Permanent marker: black & orange Small piece of ribbon for hat band

Fancy Ornament Hooks

1. Clip off 4 inches of wire. Find something fat enough to make a hook (a good example would be the fat handle of a paintbrush.) Bend the wire at the hook, and with the straight end, thread on a bead (one large one, or a medium size one with a smaller on each end, or 3 smaller ones). 2. When you thread on the last bead, bend the wire, so the beads won’t fall off, as shown in the picture. With a magic marker, or a highlighter marker, make a large loop going the opposite way of the hook where you first bent the wire. Take your needle nose pliers and make a loop and then start bending the wire into the larger loop and your done. 3. To put the ornament on, put it on the bottom loop and feed it through till it lays on the larger loop. Make several of these for a great present. Fast, easy and it really does look great and one of a kind.

Gum Wrappers

Cut one basic “I” shape (on p. 56) from white craft foam. Place gum pack onto foam and glue “arms of the “I” around

gum. Cut snowman shape (p. 56) from white craft foam and hat (p. 18) from black craft foam. Glue hat to head of snowman. Glue the body of the “I” to front of snowman allowing the head of snowman to be above the gum pack. Glue piece of ribbon to hat for hat band. Note: you may also use clipart as shown in the picture above.

12 strips of 3/8” x 6½” paper Glue Toothpicks for applying glue Scissors Measured cutting mat (optional)

3-D Paper Snowflakes 1. Find the exact center to two strips and glue them together to form a plus (+) sign, making certain that they intersect at the exact center of each strip (figure

A). Forming these on top of a measured cutting mat will ensure a perfect 90-degree angle. Note: The horizontal strip should be under the vertical strip. 2. On each side of the horizontal strip, glue another horizontal strip (figure B). This time the horizontal strips go over the vertical strip. In all cases, the strips should butt up next to each other. 3. Weave two vertical strips into position, again butting them up to the ones next to them, and glue at all overlapping spots (figure C). You will have used six strips to make a woven plus (+) sign. 4. Weave the remaining six strips together to form another plus (+) sign (figure D). 5. Turn one of the plus signs a quarter turn to the right so you have an X. Place the plus sign on top of it (figure E – next page). 6. Hold the end of a center strip of the top (plus) half in one hand. Directly underneath will be an inside corner of the X half. This looks like an L shape. Take the end of one of the corner L strips, flip it over like a pancake (one half twist), and glue it to the tip of the center strip you are holding (figure F – next page). You will be hoping for an oval-shaped angle, but for the moment any sort of an angle will do. After a few you will get the feel of it. Do the same with the other corner L strip and the same center strip. This forms one point of the eight-pointed snowflake (figure G – next page). Note: Make certain that the glue is set before moving on to the next strip. The half twists are like cocked rubber bands and you do not want them to come un-cocked! 7. After one point is complete, rotate the entire things to get to the next center strip on the top half. It gets easier after the first point since the two halves are then fastened together. Note: It will be helpful to work on a sheet of cork and stick a push pin thru the center to hold things together. Do whatever works for you.

8. Continue to lift, twist and glue two strips for two more points. 9. Turn the entire piece over and repeat the process on the four points on the underneath (bottom) half (figure I). 10. After the glue has dried completely, trim the dog-ears off of each point. Just follow the curve of the point. Notes & Variations: At first reading you may thing you will never know what you’re supposed to do, but when you actually try to make a snowflake you will find it fairly easy. A lacier look can be achieved by changing the position of the 12 strips when weaving them together. Rather than butt the strips up next to each other, leave a 1/8-inch or ¼-inch between them. Smaller and lacier looking snowflakes can be made using 1/8-inch-wide strips instead of the 3/8-inch-wide ones. In this case, the strips should be cut 4¼ inches in length.

The crust batter will rise to cover most of the pumpkin as it bakes. Bake until the crust is dark golden brown on top, about 50 minutes to 1 hour. Let the cobbler rest 20 minutes or up to 1 hour before serving. Serve topped with vanilla ice cream, if desired. Serves 8 to 10. *DO NOT USE plain solid packed pumpkin.
