Carbon County and Stillwater County rests amid the folded

hems of the spectacular Beartooth Wilderness. The quaint towns in these areas are blessed as Gateway Towns to Yellowstone National Park, and offer many reasons to stay to en-joy the abundant box of delights dur-ing the winter season.

Slip on a pair of skis or strap on a snowboard and enjoy the delights of Red Lodge Ski Mountain’s numerous slopes. Warm up at its restaurants or sit outside on its large deck and soak in the surrounding scenery.

Want to go shopping? The nu-merous downtowns dotted through these two counties unveil a cornu-copia of local stores with local mer-chandise made by local artists of all persuasions. These treasure chests provide, literally, something for ev-ery taste.

Historically, Western folklore abounds here with names like Liver Eatin’ Johnson, Buffalo Bill and Ca-lamity Jane falling from local lips. And let’s not forget members of Butch Cassidy’s “Wild Bunch” at-tempted robbery on a bank in Red Lodge, involving “Kid” Curry and Harry Longabaugh, “The Sundance Kid” himself.

Into the modern age, Ernest Hemingway often waxed lyrical about the area and Highway 78 from Columbus to Red Lodge is named after Donald Jack Ruhl, one of Mon-tana’s 7 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.

Local museums in both Red Lodge and Columbus capture all this for you.

All the towns include excellent restaurants boasting the best steaks around and a range of intoxicating gourmet platters as well as a variety of Mexican specialties.

The taverns are many and play to their own eccentric tune. Here you can find beers and wines from around the world.

The music scene is vibrant, with an eclectic sonic mix of styles to whet any appetite during the week and notably on weekends.

And after a hard day’s night of shopping and enjoying the plentiful supply of scenery, food and bever-age, there are a surplus of hotels and motels to help you rest your happily exhausted selves.

HAVE FUN AND WELCOME TO THE AREA!

CARBON COUNTYKIBLER & KIRCH 25TH ANNIVERSAY CELEBRATION

25 YEARS OF WELL-DESIGNED LIVING 1990-2015

Honoring the Founders of Kibler & Kirch: Anita Cramer, Erica Hash, Jean Foster & Rosina Kastelitz

Please join us at 101 North Broadway, Red Lodge, MT to celebrate 25 years of continuous service to our community. Kibler & Kirch’s founders will be on-hand Sat., Dec. 5, 2015 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to toast the legacy of well-designed living. The day begins with a party and giveaway of a stunning shearling chair from furniture-maker Lee Industries. All merchandise will be 25% OFF.

For a quarter of a century, Kibler & Kirch has been well known for our ex-pertise in interior design and a source of American made home furnishings. Only a handful of merchants in this small resort town can attest to the hard work involved in keeping the doors open through economic downturns and sea-sonal ups and downs. Kibler & Kirch has also been a destination shopping expe-rience for Billings, Cody and many other surrounding towns which has played an enormous impact on the resort economy.

The founders of Kibler & Kirch had such a strong passion for what they were doing they worked diligently offering services and products that clients would appreciate and cherish for many years. Each and every one of our clients was special and most have become personal friends throughout the many years. These wonderful women also possessed a true sense of community, volunteer-ing many hours to various organizations in Red Lodge. Kibler & Kirch has been a major contributor to the employment of many people over the years.

The legacy lives on and our mission remains the same; enrich our custom-ers’ lives through their homes with quality products and unexpected service. We will inspire you to create a fuller, better sense of home.

Come help us celebrate 25 years of well-designed living, and toast to 25 more.

Red Lodge Mountain will open for the 2015/16 season on Fri., Nov. 27. Following a couple storms that settled on the mountain in late October and early November, the slopes are blan-keted in snow. To supplement the natu-ral snow fall, the snow making crew be-gan their operations in the first week of November.

During the off-season, the mountain tackled numerous projects in order to prepare for the coming season. The multi-year glading/fuel reduction proj-ect focused its efforts on Paradise in the Palisades area, as well as the treed area to skiers left of Little Tree on the lower portion of the mountain. This work not only reduces the amount of fuel that would be available to potential wild fires, but it also opens the heavily forested areas of the mountain to more skiing.

On the Miami Beach chair lift, the lift maintenance team replaced the gear box and auxiliary motor. In addi-tion, the snow making pump was re-

built, and now provides more a more efficient and reliable supply of water to the snow making reservoir.

Red Lodge Mountain is also excited about the addition of Rossignol’s award winning line of Experience skis to the rental shop.

The easy-to-turn Experience skis make learning to ski easier and less in-timidating, and the mountain is work-ing to introduce multi-lesson learn-to-ski programs that will allow new skiers the opportunity to purchase the gear they learned on at a much reduced rate.

The lifts will start turning at 9 a.m. on opening day. The number of runs and lifts that will be available has not yet been determined, and will largely depend on any additional snowfall. Food service for opening weekend will be available in the Main Lodge, at Mid-way Chalet, and at the Bierstube, with the Bierstube hosting live music from Dan Dubuque on Friday and Kalyn Beasley on Saturday.

When will the Federal Reserve raise interest rates? This question has been on the minds of economists and financial market prognosticators for quite some time now. But what does it mean to you, as an individual investor?

First of all, it’s important to understand just what is meant by “raising rates.” The Federal Reserve, or the “Fed,” di-rectly controls short-term interest rates, although, through various measures, it can also affect long-term rates. Typi-cally, the Fed will lower short-term rates to stimulate the economy. Conversely, the Fed will raise rates to slow down the economy if it seems to be “overheating” and threatening to push inflation to excessive levels.

Since the end of 2008, when the financial crisis hit, the Fed has kept short-term rates close to zero. But now, fol-lowing several years of reasonably strong economic growth, the Fed appears poised to raise rates. No one can really pre-dict the exact timing of the rate hike, but statements from the Fed indicate that it seems to be a matter of “when,” not “if.”

Fed chairperson Janet Yellen has indicated that when the increase comes, it may be relatively small, and that fur-ther increases will be spaced out enough to avoid potential “shocks” to the economy. Still, as an investor, you need to be aware of the potential impact of any interest rate increase. So, consider the following:

• Review your bond holdings. As short-term rates rise, shorter-term bonds, and even some “cash” instruments, may eventually become more attractive than longer-term bonds, which tend to be more volatile. A sell-off of longer-term bonds can push their prices downward, so make sure these bonds don’t take up too large a percentage of your fixed-income portfolio.

• Build a bond ladder. A bond ladder may prove ben-eficial to you in all interest-rate environments. To construct this ladder, you need to own bonds and other fixed-rate ve-hicles, such as certificates of deposit (CDs) of varying ma-turities. Thus, when market interest rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds, which typically pay higher rates than short-term bonds, working for you. And when interest rates rise, as may be the case soon, you can reinvest your maturing, short-term bonds and CDs at the higher rates. Be sure to evaluate whether the bonds or CDs held in the ladder are consistent with your investment objectives, risk tolerance and financial circumstances.

• Be prepared for volatility. Certain segments of the fi-nancial markets don’t like interest rate increases – after all, higher rates mean higher borrowing costs, which make it harder for businesses to expand their operations. There-fore, depending on the composition of your portfolio, be prepared for some volatility when rates start moving up. However, since the Fed has already indicated it is likely to raise rates fairly soon, such a hike may already be largely “priced in” to the market, so any turbulence may be some-what muted.

By taking these steps, you can help contain the effects of rising interest rates on your own investment outlook. Ul-timately, as an investor, you need to concentrate on those things you can control, no matter what the Federal Reserve decides to do. And that means you need to build a diver-sified portfolio that reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Maintaining this type of focus can help you – no matter where interest rates are headed.
