Olivia Palacios is a charming 5 year

old who will capture your heart

with her sunny smile. She was

diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic

Leukemia (ALL) when she was just

3 years old. It was a startling

diagnosis, but one that would

prove her true resilience.

Olivia is responding well to

her treatment and should be

finished by the end of 2010. One

bonus is that after losing all her hair

during this process, Olivia has grown

“new hair”. This huge bump in the

road of her life seems to have had

little effect on Olivia’s development

as a healthy, happy, normal child.

The Children’s Art Project fundsprograms that make life better for children with cancer and theirfamilies at The University of TexasMD Anderson Cancer Center.Through the sales of cards and gifts featuring the original artworkof MD Anderson’s young patientsfrom the Children’s Cancer Hospital,proceeds fund summer camps,college scholarships, a rehabilitativeski trip, in-hospital classrooms, childlife workers and other excitingactivities for young cancer patients.

Dalvin Blanchard has a special guardian angel.

A high school student, Dalvin may not have

always known that this person was an angel.

The transformation happened very quickly.

In 2009, Dalvin was just a typical teenager,

focused on his grades, girls and football.

He played running back, wide receiver and

strong safety on his football team, working

toward a successful sophomore season.

During practice one day, he hurt his leg and

couldn’t run. His coach sent him to a

specialist to check out the injury. The answer

was worse than a pulled muscle or broken

leg. Dalvin had rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft

tissue tumor. That’s when his guardian angel

showed up.

Dalvin’s brother, Lesley, is 14 years older.

Lesley took over as Dalvin’s caregiver, so his

parents could continue to work and maintain

their family health insurance. The change in

their brotherly relationship has been a bonus

for both. Dalvin is no longer the “little kid”

who was sometimes an annoyance, and

Lesley is no longer the distant, grown-

up big brother. They have become

close friends and enjoy doing

many things together.
