Holistic Rubric v. Analytical Rubric

HolisticAll criteria

(dimensions, traits) are evaluated

simultaneously.

• Scoring is faster than with analytic rubrics.• Requires less time to achieve inter-rater reliability (agreement among raters).• Good for summative assessment.

• Single overall score does not communicate information about what to do to improve.

• Not good for formative assessment.

AnalyticEach criterion

(dimension, trait) is evaluated separately.

• Gives diagnostic information to teacher.• Gives formative feedback to students.• Easier to link to instruction than holistic rubrics.• Good for formative assessment; adaptable for summative assessment; if you need an overall score for grading, you can combine the scores.

• Takes more time to score than holistic rubrics.

• Takes more time to achieve inter-rater reliability than with holistic rubrics.

Jonas’s selection as the Reciever of memory is a punishment because of three different reasons. For one, it requires pain, loneliness, and can’t ever talk about his training. Jonas will have to carry the weight of every single memory of the world with him, his entire life. “He also wouldn’t be able to discuss training with any member of the community including his parents and Elders”, pg.68 Recieving the memories of the past can be fun, sad, exciting, etc. When Jonas recieved the memory when the elephant dies was very emotional, the path he felt was undescribable. Jonas and the Giver both have good and bad memories of the past. Jonas and the Giver both have good and bad memories of the past. Sometimes Jonas won’t be trained because of the pain the Giver’s in. “The Giver cannot apply for any medication accept if it’s not related to work, only for injury or illness. Nothing to heal the pain of all those memories weighing him down.

Jonas will eventually be all alone because he can’t tell anybody about the memories the Giver gave to him. A soon as the Cheif Elder said, “Alone and apart,” Jonas felt as if he was different. He is also alone because there is no other reciever of memory. Jonas will be stuck with the memories of the past no matter what kind they are; forever. Jonas has no social life because Jonas states, “with my schedule it leaves me no time for reareation.” Jonas’s selection was a punishment because of all the physical pain he’ll go through with the memories he can’t get rid of until the next selection. He will have no friend’s because he’s sworn to secrecy and his friend’s might want him to tell them about his training. With the job of Reciever your work is your life. Jonas’s mom said, “Your selection is a great honor, me and your father are very proud,” but they don’t know what he will go through. There are a lot of punishments but this is by far the worst.

In the Giver Jonas was not assigned the Job as the receiver he was selected. I think it was a punishment because he experienced pain and death. He probably didn’t want to be the receiver. And he started at a very young age. Jonas’s assignment as the next receiver of memory was a punishment because he was experiencing pain and death. In the text it states that he experienced sun-burns and a civil war. Dead people and soldiers everywhere. As young as he is he shouldn’t experience something like that. Because that’s cruel and inappropriate, Also Horrible. Jonas’s assignment As the next receiver of memory was a punishment because He probably didn’t want to be the receiver. In the text it says at the ceremony of twelves he was selected to be the receiver. I think if he was to pick what he wanted to be that probably wouldn’t be his pick. And the type of job it is he wouldn’t.

Page 29: Holistic GMAS Writing Rubric Training: Middle Grades ELA January 30, 2015 Pat Brasfield Janet Junco.

Jonas’s assignment as the next receiver of memory was a punishment because he started working at a young age. In the text it says at the ceremony he was selected at the age of twelve to be the receiver. And he started training so he could do his job. I personally think the appropriate age is 14 or 15 because he should enjoy his childhood. Actually every child should in that community. Instead of them being selected at a very early age to do a Job or work. In conclusion he is too young to experience pain and death because it’s scary and difficult to take in.Also he was selected at a very young age and he should enjoy his childhood. Actually we all do. And we should stop trying to grow up so fast before it passes by like a fly and we end up missing it. Wishing we were still a child.

Apply Rubric and Appropriate Commentary

Terry’s samples

Effective formative commenting• is connected to the grading rubric• is limited to three or four key points• is clearly prioritized into higher and lower

order concerns• is forward looking – making suggestions

for future action• takes the student seriously as a thinker

and writer.
