    ― ADVANCED WOMEN'S ENSEMBLE ―

Sanctus . . . . . Text adapted from the Book of Common Prayer; Music by Rupert Lang; From the “Mass for Many Nations" Soloists: Grace Lappenga, Elaina Laarman, Hannah Wierenga, & Emily Asselin

“Mass for Many Nations was commissioned by Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver, British Columbia in November of 1994. In keeping with their belief that all are welcome in this place, music at the cathedral promotes an openness in the use of various styles and traditions. In an attempt to weave this philosophy into a Mass setting, Lang has set each movement to reflect a separate aspect of the global community: Sanctus representing Latin American influences.” - Performance Notes, “Sanctus”

    Lunar Lullaby . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Poem by Kathleen Nicely; Music by Jacob Narverud

The moon settles in the dusky sky.The gentle eyes of the north star

rest upon your sleeping faceand the heavens gaze upon you.

In this moment, I know; You are not from the ground on which you tread,

but of the stars. You are my radiant, my celestial child.

As night is drown’d by morningyou remain at my side,

accompanying the sunriseuntil night swells again across the sky.

Then, dreaming, you return to the stars.

    Jordan’s Angels . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . by Rollo Dilworth

“‘Jordan’s Angels’ tells the story of a child who receives comfort from a vision of being surrounded by a ‘band of angels’... Similar to the water images found in other spirituals (‘Deep River,’ ‘Stan’ Still Jordan,’ ‘Roll Jordan, Roll,’ and ‘Wade in the Water,’ for example) the Jordan River symbolically represents safety, peace, and freedom. It is believed that slaves often made references to water when they sang if a planned escape was to include crossing a creek or river as a means of covering up a trail.” - Performance Notes, “Jordan’s Angels”

    ― TREBLE ENSEMBLE ―

Pineywood Mountain . . . . . . . . Words from American Folk Songs, with new Words by Jay Althouse; Music by Jay Althouse

This is a fresh, new folk song with the feel of an older, classic folk song from days past. Enjoy the energy that this piece brings. You may just find yourself wanting to clap your hands and slap your knee along with us!

  • I See Colors. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . by Pinkzebra

We see colors in the images impressed in our memories, colors in the vivid fall landscape around us, colors in the beautiful diversity of God’s people around the world.

    There Has to Be a Song. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . by Andrea Ramsey

Celebrating the power of music and song to lift our spirits during hard times.

    ― LIVING HOPE SINGERS ―

    In Meeting We Are Blessed . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Music by Troy Robertson; Text by R. Gatsnahos and John DonneSoloist: Calvin Hilbelink

“We are met together and in meeting we are blessed. Peace in coming and in going, peace in labor and in rest…”

The text of this piece captures the idea of being stronger together and the blessing it is when we can support one another in all seasons of life. We have lived through a season of separation and even isolation, and this piece reminds us to never take for granted the bond we experience in being able to meet together. In our meeting we find unity, peace, strength, community, and hope.

    Shalom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .by Dan Forrest

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be trou-bled and do not be afraid.” - John 14:27

Check out this helpful resource on the Biblical meaning of Shalom.

We close out our concert by singing a blessing of Shalom over you.
