In the midst of summer, seven week-old Nina joined a swimming class. She was very active in the warm water of the pool and she may join the swimming group for babies later on. Her mother said Nina was one happy chicken, now sound asleep after her class. So young, so fit! Nina was accompanied by her mother and her very proud grandmother, who was visiting from Australia, and they came to the Hollandse Club as a reciprocal Club. Very smart!

Member Emmy Jansen took her family to the Changi Sailing Club, a reciprocal club from our Club.

Happy chickens can be found anywhere, as I won the Lucky Draw and attended a performance of Nederlands Dans Theater. Then there’s the column of happy Karien van Ditzhuijzen, on moving from one place to another, we all know what that’s like, especially when the haze was rather challenging so early, what can we expect later on? In case we need to stay inside again, visit the library and make a choice from the excellent collection. One of the members is telling you all about it. Many happy faces of children were seen at the Summer Camp, exercising and having a good time at the Club. They made the staff smile from ear to ear!

Have you made some promises to yourself about getting fit and fitter? Good! The General Manager has a great offer for all members; you can read all about it in his article. All trainers are eager to start again and help you gain your goals. Have you seen the renovated tennis court? It’s so inviting. As are the hotel rooms, almost fully booked for months to come.

And isn’t that what it’s all about: feel fit and be happy. Or just feel happy. Be fit.

If you have just returned from your holiday, welcome back. In case you haven’t noticed it yet, the Brits have come to the Club and it’s great to have them for some more weeks until their swimming pool is ready.

See you at the Club!Eva Stein

Dear Fellow Members,Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful summer break, either enjoying a holiday in the region, or spending time with family and friends back home. And of course, a very warm welcome to all new members that have recently joined the Hollandse Club. We’re seeing a good increase in our membership

numbers recently, and it’s great to see that our Club continues to be an attractive environment for many expat and local families, as well as for our corporate

partners.

You will have noticed that we now have renovated the last of our five tennis courts, and that we finished the building of our new hotel rooms. We now have 13 Club Rooms available for you and your guests. Please contact our staff at the

reception for reservations. You will see continued renovations and upgrades happening at the Club in the coming weeks: The changing rooms, the teenage

room and the indoor lounge area, to name a few.

I hope you have had the opportunity to try out our new menu at the Terrace. Some great new dishes have been added, and the quality and presentation of

our food has seen some big improvements. Many thanks to our new Head Chef Raymond and his staff, as well as the members of the F&B committee, for their

hard work in making these changes. We welcome all feedback or suggestions you may have.

A new school year has now kicked off and so has a new season of activities and initiatives at the Hollandse Club. You can read about these upcoming events in

this magazine. To highlight just one specific event: After the successful evenings with Jan Jaap van der Wal and Karin Bloemen in recent months, we will have

another Dutch comedian – Kasper van Kooten – joining us at the Club for a performance on Friday 20 September. I would like to take this opportunity to

thank KLM for their generous support in making these events happen.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon.

PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

Page 5: Hollandse Club Magazine: September/October 2013

Dear Members,The great months of September and October are ahead of us. Months where the routine returns. The children go back to school and join the after school activities. We’re all heading back to work, budgeting next year income and staffing, planning our calendars for the remaining of 2013. We love to catch up with you, our dear members who we missed during the holiday season to hear your stories.

I am not sure if it is just me but after the holidays I always feel the need to get rid of the extra “holiday package”. Spending time with family and friends around the world usually involves a lot of BBQ’s, wine, champagne, late brunches that end in more BBQ’s. Followed by long evenings with a bit more wine or other fruits of joy…

Starting with another (admirable) marathon on the Great Wall in China with some friends is one way to get back into shape, but there are easier ways. Your own Hollandse Club has lots to offer. Do you know we offer professional Aqua Spinning classes on the Friday mornings?

Sport & Events departmentWe are happy to offer all our members a free ride back into shape by enjoying a free trial class for most of our sports activities. A voucher with more information will be sent to you together with your next statement of account.

If you are eager to start and do not want to wait for the voucher please contact Robbie, our new addition to the team who brings along a wealth of experience from his work as sports manager at his previous International Club in The UK. Robbie is leading the new Sports & Events department together with Yurni and Marjon. Robbie and Yurni will introduce themselves in more detail in this magazine.

We’re keen for your suggestions and look forward to seeing you in our sport outlets to answer any of your questions.

The Terrace goes wirelessIn the coming weeks you will notice our Terrace staff with PDAs at the Terrace. NO, they are not surfing the net or playing games during work time. To serve you better and faster our Terrace staff are going to make use of pdas to take your orders.

Air-conditioned dining Via various ways I have received requests for an air-conditioned dining facility. This has triggered us to start a pilot soon at the indoor lounge. On selected days of the week part of the indoor lounge is turned into a restaurant with air-conditioned dining. A changing three or four course menu of choice will be served at a reasonable price. More information will be sent to you via email and via posters at the Club.

With a wide variety of events on the way I hope to see you at the Travel Talk on travelling to Australia, the Ukulele Workshop, one of the Comedy Nights, the Art Jamming with Vivienne du Toit, the Kids Bazaar or the Mad Science Halloween party.

This time around Kasper will perform alone, without a band, so there will be no dancing after, but he reassures us he will be even more fun on his own. ‘Offshore’ is specifically targeted at Dutch expats living abroad, and is uniquely prepared for the Hollandse Club. It will combine highlights from all areas of his career (theatre, TV, as well as music), featuring acts, stories and songs that show what life is like these days in the Netherlands. Those who are a bit nervous to come back after being targeted by Jan Jaap van de Wal in his last performance at the Club need not worry; nobody will be bullied in this show!

With his humoristic view on reality, Kasper will show the expats, who often have not lived in their home country for a long time, an entertaining version of current state of affairs. Students, politics, Kasper’s own childhood, sport-commentators and famous Netherlanders (BN-ers): all will be commented on, imitated or otherwise made fun of. It will not be an evening off classic stand-up comedy, but one of sharing stories. Funny stories; so join in and listen.

Tickets can be bought at the reception or send an email to [email protected]

BY KARIEN VAN DITZHUIJZEN

Kasper van Kooten with ‘Offshore’, a unique travel show with stories, comedy, imitations and music. Exactly the kind of diversity you can expect from Van Kooten.

Introducing Kasper van Kooten is no easy job. What is it that he does exactly? The better question is, what does he not do? Kasper is an actor, comedian, writer, drummer, singer, songwriter, composer, presenter, and probably many things more. If you haven’t heard of him, you would have heard of his famous father Kees, or his equally well-known sister Kim. With the general public, Kasper is best known for his part in Allstars, a TV series about a local football league, and for being the drummer in the Dutch band ‘Acda en de Munnik’. He has toured theatres in the Netherlands with comedy shows, written a novel, featured in films, and is involved in many musical projects. At the moment, he is preparing for his new theatre show, ‘Karakters’, which is based on his new book of the same title that will be published in parallel. The show is a theatrical remake of the book, which tells the story of a megalomaniac mental-coach, who treats famous people in a villa in the South of France.

When Kasper visits Singapore to play for us, it won’t be his first visit to the Lion City, and not even his first time at the Hollandse Club. He performed at the Club in 2008 with his band, playing, singing and dancing until late at night. Singapore stole his and his partner’s heart, and they are happy to come back, to enjoy its diversity, from high-tech gadgets, modern architecture and shopping malls to wet markets, food courts, and colourful neighbourhoods like Little India and Chinatown. He also likes performing for expat audiences, and Singapore has not been the only location he has visited professionally. He played Kuala Lumpur, Curaçao, and Oman as well, amongst others, and noticed the Dutch expats really like seeing artists from their home country performing. Expats in countries far from home tend to cling together, understandably, and a taste from home is often very welcome. Kasper remembers the audience at the Hollandse Club well. A nice crowd, he says, the response was very enthusiastic, but possibly a bit too much so, as after the two hour-long show, they did not want to let Kasper and his band stop. On the contrary, a dance floor was prepared for the after party.

DAY OF GERMAN UNITYBY KATJA PAUS

When I was asked by the Club to write about Germany’s National

Day, I had no idea what to write. I asked my kids (20, 17 and 9 years old) what Germany means to them. This unfortunately helped only a little bit. That’s what you get with TCK third culture kids; nevertheless, I asked them what they know about the day of German unity, which we celebrate on October 3rd. Again, not much. So I asked myself what do I know about our National Day? Why do we celebrate it on October 3rd? What are we actually celebrating? Who chose this particular day? Since when have we been celebrating it?

While I still remember the events in connection with the fall of the Berlin Wall (which did not take place in October but in November), where I had been on that day and lots of other things in connection with the German reunification, I had to admit that I knew nothing about the famous October 3rd.

During this time, I worked in a hotel in Bonn (the former capital of Germany) and on the night of November 9th, my boyfriend (now husband) and I, like thousands of other people, went to the centre of the city to see the wall fall down on big screens. Nobody was really sure what was going on and what would happen but it was definitely very emotional. We were all cheering and happy but frankly, most of us had mixed feelings.

Thanks to Wikipedia – and ultimately, the Hollandse Club, who wanted me to write something about Germany, I have now upgraded my knowledge on German history: National Day commemorates the anniversary of the German reunification in 1990 that was decided by the Volkskammer (GDR Congress) on 22nd August 1989. The decision was that with effect of October 3rd 1990, the German Democratic Republic would access to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany according to Article 23 of the Basic Laws, which always had a provision for the case of a reunification. Until this day, the western part of Germany, the Federal Republic of Germany, celebrated the ‘National Day of Memorial of the German People’ on June 17th. The eastern part of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, celebrated ‘Founding Day’ on October 7th. An alternative, or maybe even more logical day to commemorate the reunification that had been discussed was the day the Berlin Wall came down (November 9th, 1989). But this day is unfortunately known for the Kristallnacht, the first large-scale Nazi-led pogroms (?) against the Jews in 1938 and therefore considered inappropriate as a national holiday.

I still remember the time we had two Germanys but for my kids’ generation, it’s already history. I hope history never repeats itself and we stay a strong united nation. For my children Germany is: cars, autobahn, the Berlin Wall, the Cologne Cathedral (most probably since we are from Cologne), and the chocolate museum (in Cologne). Oh yes and of course sausages, beer (cliché, I know) and their grandparents.

Facts about GermanyThe Flag: Three equal horizontal bands of black (top), red, and gold; these colors have played an important role in German history and can be traced back to the medieval banner of the Holy Roman

Emperor - a black eagle with red claws and beak on a gold field.

Winning the lucky draWby eva stein- veeneman

‘Thank you for your email. Got her details down and we will prepare the tickets for her. Would be great if you could remind her that the show is at 8pm, and she has to collect the tickets by Friday 12 July, anytime after 7.30pm, at Esplanade Theatre’s Info Counter.’

So I won.I am three times lucky, because not only did I win the Hollandse Club Lucky Draw, I also won tickets to a performance of NDT2, Nederlands Dans Theater 2. And I won these tickets because the other two winners appeared to be overseas that date; happily I was lucky third choice.

I know NDT dance company well, or at least I did some twenty years ago. When I moved from Amsterdam to The Hague, the former director of NDT offered me a room in the house where most of the dancers lived. I didn’t know any dancers then; I only had seen one beautiful performance (l’Histoire du Soldat) and worked for the Holland Dance Festival on the opening of the first theatre designed for dance, for NDT.After the Christmas break, when all the dancers returned to The Hague, I was there in their house in a room on the second floor and we were to share the kitchen. I found out that dancing is

an extremely hard job and it takes a lot of energy. I learned about their work with choreographers, who was in favour and why. When they came home after a regular workday, they were worn out and could only grab something to eat and fall asleep. On days off, we would have crazy conversations and share a meal. When they had to perform somewhere, they had to be on time to catch the bus and bring the (untranslated) ‘rode koffertjes’ with make-up. When they were on an international tour, the house was empty and quiet, and I missed their presence. Some would eat lots of pasta and huge desserts. Tiramisu was in every fridge. Others ate three crackers with a cheese spread lightly for dinner.

They came from all over the world and most of them had been dancing since they were little. They were so young, some only 17 years old and living abroad for the first time. Their job was dancing and working together; to concentrate on what they were creating with the choreographer, stay focused all the time, because if one messes up, there’s no magic. They were sore every morning and had to continue rehearsing daily, even in their holidays.

Soon after moving in, I met Robert and everybody was interested: what does he look like? Did he bring flowers? Why is he late? What is he like? I wondered too: would they approve of him? We visited every performance (for free) and joined all dinner parties; he fitted in just fine and we had a great time. When we got married, my Swiss friend, dancer and choreographer, Martino Müller, was our best man. Most dancers from those days have retired. Dancers dance until they’re in their thirties or even younger, though NDT3 also existed: 40+ dancers. Most have found another profession; some of them went into choreographing, while others became photographers, ballet masters or are considering dance therapy or lessons. In Holland, dancers were helped to find a way to make a living.

Now I am looking forward to meeting another one from those days, Paul Lightfoot, the British choreographer who’s the artistic director now. Will I able to get backstage again? Would we recognise each other?

What I’m sure of is that NDT’s modern dance will be able to make me forget about myself and move me to tears; looking at the beautiful movements to the music, great costumes, the décor.

Will it be funny? Looking at the programme it looks like it: performing on treadmills.

So I’m home. It’s Friday night: the tickets were waiting for me, and the performance was interesting and sometimes funny. We watched four pieces; I didn’t cry, to the great relief of my eldest daughter, Soe, who came along. The audience was very enthusiastic, laughed at many jokes and applauded for minutes!

I couldn’t get backstage. (SMS from the theater: I am afraid he’s not in Singapore this time around.) Instead we listened to questions asked to one of the dancers afterwards. What she had to say about a regular workday, well, it hasn’t changed a bit in all those years. Every morning they have a classical ballet class, then rehearse a couple of ballets, have a quick lunch and run through some more. They’re still one family, they work really hard, have to rely on each other, are in pain, love to dance and to touch people’s hearts with what they’re doing! Some choreographers put their piece on top of them; some come with fantasies and record on dancers’ iPhones to show what they have to rehearse; some work together with the group.

I am really very lucky to have won tickets for An Evening with Nederlands Dans Theater: it was another way of telling my daughter about the old days when mummy met daddy. We watched a great performance and forgot about ourselves. Thank you for a beautiful evening.

On Sunday afternoon of July 7, the Sneak Preview of the new hotel rooms was well visited. Building and renovating activities are well ahead of schedule. Some 25 people climbed up the steps and came to visit the Club’s newest accommodation.

The most popular room is the one located at the end of the corridor. This spacious room has an extra window with a view. The Junior Suite was also very much appreciated by the visitors.

A souvenir from the former bowling alley is the long mirror along the corridor. All rooms will have a colour theme. This colour is found in the exclusive artwork hanging over the beds, in the chair cushions and next to the entrance door of the rooms.

The Club has been welcoming guests to the new rooms since July 19 and the feedback is great. All rooms are equipped with comfortable box spring beds, a chair, television, safe deposit and Nespresso coffee maker with complementary coffee cups. A dedicated member of staff takes luggage to the room and can be found around the Rooms.

The first thing we see when we come to the Hollandse Club is the gate, and after entering the building we hear sweet singing voices ‘Good morning ma’am, good evening

sir’ and there they are, all smiles and helpful: the girls from Reception.Their job is to answer the phone, sell items from the cabinet and they’re in charge of the towels. If you wish to make reservations for hotel rooms, tennis or squash courts, just call and they’ll take care of it.

In the morning there’s mostly Leila, a receptionist for almost three years. She’s married and a mother of a 10 month-old son. She is a Hotel and Restaurant Management graduate from the Philippines. What she likes best about her job is interacting with the members as some are really, really nice. Some come in angry

due to taxi drivers or when they’re looking for their stuff in the Lost & Found. ‘Most members are happy, that’s really nice’, Leila says. The other thing she likes about being a receptionist at the Club, is her colleagues. ‘We have initiative and work goes real smooth. Just enjoy your work, love what you do’, she adds smiling. She notices that hotel guests like the new rooms: ‘sometimes they like to come because of the facilities’.

MJ, nickname of Maricelle, works late shifts. She says: ‘I love the job. Is it a calling? I love dealing with the people at the Reception. Deliveries, enquiries about the hotel, complaints (though not so often), comedy nights, swimming lessons.…’. She loves to talk to members and joke around. About her colleagues, she says: ‘The three of us, communication is open, we respect each other.’ MJ is a graduated nurse from the Philippines and has a boyfriend. She worked in a private clinic. Now she uses her skills for first aid and she’s trained to handle AED. ‘Most challenging is when there’s an event and we don’t know it, so we have to stay calm and find what’s going on.’

Anna, 24, who has a brother in Singapore, came straight from the Philippines. Her first job there was as a reservation agent, similar to the work at the Reception. ‘As front liner you deal with different kinds of people. Members are approachable, I like to joke with them.’ She has worked at the Club for one year and four months. With her colleagues, she’s laughs and jokes: ‘they’re my big sisters’. Her job is making reservations, answering questions and assisting those checking in. Hotel guests say that staff here are really friendly, and that facilities and location are good. Anna usually works at night with MJ, starting at 1pm. Her hobbies are cooking and baking, and travelling with friends, like to Philippines’ tourist destinations. She recommends Boracay for it’s white sandy beach, and plans to go to Palawan in November. She notices a more open communication between management and staff to tackle problems, like late check in guests who need help with their luggage.

Junior Chef, He Jin Feng was presented with the 5 Year Award. In recognition and appreciation of his dedication to the Club, he will receive a cash reward.

Originally from London UK, having studied in sports science, development and management, I would class myself as a bit sports mad! Squash is my main sport, but also enjoy to play tennis, football and golf.

I am a big Arsenal fan, so I tend to organize my weekends around watching the game during the season, a bit sad I know! Traveling is also a big passion of mine, so I look forward to traveling extensively within the region during my time in Singapore, so many exciting places to visit!

Before coming to Singapore, my working background includes a variety of roles in the UK, in local government and then more recently in a similar sports club to here. After completing research on the branding of English Premier League football clubs in South East Asia, I was keen to play a part in the growth of the sports industry here. Having been in Singapore 18 months so far, I was previously contracting in sports sponsorship and events management before joining the Hollandse Club.

My ambitions for the club is to encourage further participation and grow interest in the sports sections, develop the event calendars across all sports, and provide and maintain a high quality of service to members. I am very approachable, so if you have any questions or queries regarding sports and recreation at the club, please don’t hesitate to contact or come and find me!!

My name is Yurni. I am a down-to-earth person and I lead a simple lifestyle. My favourite sport is running. I do running leisurely for twice a week. I used to represent my secondary school in long distance running. I have stopped running competitively ever since I was down with a knee injury. My hobby is baking. I have been baking since I was 10 years old. I started baking ever since I watched Jamie Oliver’s cooking show. And aside from baking, if my schedules with my high school friends clashes

we would volunteer for sports events. We have been volunteering for sports events for 4 years. Examples of the events are Shape Run, Standard Chartered Marathon, Adidas Sundown, Ocbc Cycle and etc.

I graduated from Republic Polytechnic in Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management in 2012. Before I came to Hollandse Club, I was working for Singapore Badminton Association. I was the Executive in the High Performance Department. Basically, I manage the well-being of the national players, youth players, coaches and sparring partners when they are in Singapore and also when they are overseas for competitions. Sometimes I am required to go overseas with them to be a Team Manager during the competitions. I also assisted the Events department in Singapore Open Super Series for two consecutive years. I was the Hotel Secretariat Manager in 2012 and 2013. I manage the arrivals and departures of the international team to and fro to the official hotel and ensuring all administration work pertaining to their participation in the competition are completed.

Here in Hollandse Club I am the Sports and Events Executive. I will be attached to Sports Department. I hope to bring in new programmes on top of the existing programmes that we have for the Club and the members here. From that I hope that they are able to try new things and provide me the feedbacks on the new ideas that the Sports Department has brought in for them. I also would like to increase the number of events and sports activities we are bringing for Club and the members here.

I am open for suggestions and I will try my very best to work on to the suggestions that are provided for the members here. A happy member is a happier environment to be in. I will be looking forward to working with the Hollandse Family!

Hi, I’m Oreal and I am the new Marketing Communications Executive. This is my first full-time job ever since graduating from Temasek Polytechnic’s Mass Communications, with a major in Journalism. I turn 21 this year, so I’m guessing I’m the youngest in the office.

Anyways, I am in charge of designing everything. From event posters to banners and other collaterals you see on print or online. And of course, I am in charge of putting this magazine together. So if you have any suggestions, tips, or would like to contribute to the magazine, feel free to drop me an email at

[email protected].

A little bit about myself - Apart from doing what I do here at my new job, which I am enjoying so far, I’ve come to realize that i spend a lot of my free time reading up and watching videos and documentaries on youtube.

These videos range from brutal crimes, murders and cults to people living in dumpsters, weird guy injecting snake venom every day, girl waking up from a coma after 20 years, German Shepherds refusing to leave their owners’ graves, conspiracy theories and other totally random stuff.

I also enjoy watching movies with ice cream in hand (I took three different Film modules in school and never stopped looking at films the same again, its all about the techniques). When I’m not being almost stationary in front of the screen, I enjoy going for a swim, reading (I love literature) and partying.

I am honoured to be a part of the Hollandse Club’s management team and I’m looking forward to great experiences here.

WALKING IN TUSCANY by Max and Gijs LeendersIn July my family and I went on holiday for my parents’ 25th wedding anniversary. Somewhat unexpectedly, we went to Italy to hike from Florence to Siena; the hike took over six days and one hundred kilometers. While I didn’t keep my cool all of the time, I would still like to share some memories with you.

While we were walking my big brothers’ girlfriend told me about the harry potter books, which made it easier for me to finish the hike. On our hike we all saw boars and deer and the beautiful views of the Italian countryside. One of my favorite things was the Italian food, we had pasta almost every night. And the swimming pools were always awesome!

All in all, I recommend yout to go there too, arriverderci.

1) Can you introduce yourself (and you family) briefly?

We are Henrike Hartemink (39) en Bernhard Wamelink (41), both from the Netherlands, with a daughter (Jitte, 8) and a newborn son (Nout, born 20 July). We moved to Singapore one month ago, where Henrike will start working at FrieslandCampina AMEA’s regional office in a finance function, after her maternity leave.

2) If you have recently moved to Singapore, where were you before? How do you like Singapore?

Before Singapore, we lived in Hong Kong for 4,5 years, where Henrike was leading the finance and supply chain function of FrieslandCampina Hong Kong. Bernhard, who has a background in logistics in food and healthcare and a passion for photography, has built his own photography business in Hong Kong, with focus at family shoots, product photography, and headshots for professional use. Currently Bernhard is exploring business opportunities in Singapore, both in the logistics and photography field. Jitte will go to the Canadian International School, to continue the IB program, that she has followed in the past 4,5 years in Hong Kong.

We loved living and working in Hong Kong, which is an incredible dynamic and vibrant city, however we already feel that Singapore is a great place for families, with space, clean air, better value for money, and a lower pace in general vs. Hong Kong. And everyone speaks english, which is very convenient.

3) What made you choose to join the Hollandse Club, what drew you to it?

Word of mouth of colleagues and friends drew us to the Hollandse Club, with special interest for (Dutch style) swimming lessons and field hockey for Jitte, tennis and pilates for Henrike, and field hockey for Bernhard. We are confident we will have a great time in Singapore and the Hollandse Club.

INTERVIEW WITH THE WAMELINK FAMILY

Every Sunday, we try to do something nice as a family. We like to explore Singapore. Every now and then, we go to

Chinatown, Arab Street or have lunch at a restaurant in Little India. But this time, we wanted to do something else, no city, no rush, just a nice place to relax.

We knew that, as members of the Dutch Club, we could go to Changi Sailing Club. But what if you are a non-sailing family? What has the Sailing Club got to offer you? After visiting their website www.csc.org.sg, which shows nice pictures of the sailing boats, catamarans, beaches and restaurant, we decided that a non-sailing family could visit the Sailing Club too.

The journey to the Sailing Club is very nice. We went by car via the ECP and drove along Loyang Avenue and through Changi Village, where you can find lovely, small, black and white houses.

As we arrived at the Club, we were surprised by the beautiful view: palm trees, white beaches and in the distance, we could see Pulau Ubin. And, of course, all the activities of the sailing club! We didn’t make a reservation at the restaurant but were lucky there was a table available. We had a perfect view of the yachts and all the activities. People preparing their boats for a trip, sailing boats playing with the wind, a small boat from the Sailing Club was in charge of taking sailors to and from their boats.

We ordered fresh drinks and a salad, and we listened to the sounds of the sea. So it is possible in Singapore….a non-city life…but very soon this dream collapses, as a big freighter spoils our tropical view: yes we are still in Singapore!

But apart from the freighters, which pass by often, the planes taking off and landing at Changi, the HDBs rising on the horizon, the Sailing Club is worth going to for a lazy Sunday afternoon in Singapore….even if you are a non-sailing family that likes to explore Singapore.

Firstly, let me introduce myself briefly. For those of you who do not know

me, my name is Pauline Welten and we moved to Singapore just over a year ago. Soon after we settled in, I managed to find part-time help/work?? At the same time, I explored some of the many charity volunteering activities Singapore has to offer. And I managed to find one: early this year I started working as a RMH Relief Volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House.

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Singapore has a mission to create, find or support programs that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children. In January 2013, the new Ronald McDonald House opened at the National University Hospital (NUH). The four-bedroom House within the hospital is a relatively new concept in RMHC, as there are only 10 Houses within hospitals worldwide. The RMH is located at level 4 of the hospital, close to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The House has four en-suite bedrooms, a reading room, living room and dining room, laundry facilities and kitchenette. It provides a “home away from home” for the sick children who are being treated at NUH and their families.

The House is staffed 24 hours, seven days a week. The RMH offers a place to call home at no cost, so families can afford the best care, regardless of location. This

program allows families to stay together, helping their children heal faster and cope better. To some of you who are familiar with the concept of a Ronald McDonald House, this may sound quite small. And you are right. At this moment, we are only capable of giving some relief to just 4 families. Usually, we have a waiting list of over 30 families. Therefore, we have been forced to change our rules and for now, only allow families of children who are staying in the Intensive Care Unit. Once the child is moved to the medium care unit, the parents have to leave the house to make room for new parents of a child staying at the ICU.

We would like to do more. RMHC Singapore will be launching a new grant-making program and is pursuing new locations of Family Rooms in local hospitals. For this, we need tremendous support! Here is how you can help:

• Putting fun into fundraising anddonations. RMHC is always looking for gifts in kind. Recently, my friends back home put some money together and I was able to sponsor a dinner for the families staying at the House. This means only SD 250! We have a wish list, in case you are interested.• Consider making the RMHC yournext fundraising activity, which you are planning for your school or company. For more information, you can contact Alvyn

Lim, House Manager, [email protected]

• RMHC is always looking for newvolunteers. If you wish to make your days, nights or weekends (or even public holidays) more meaningful, your might consider to join as a relief volunteer. All you need to do is set aside just 4-5 hours a week to bring a smile and good cheer to the families at RMH. But remember: being a volunteer does not mean without obligation!

So far, we have not been able to persuade a Dutch Company to sponsor the RMHC Singapore. Recently, The Hollandse Club was kind enough to sponsor us in kind, for which the RMHC is very grateful. In Dutch we have a saying: “Goed voorbeeld doet goed volgen!.” Hope my wish comes true!

If you have any questions after reading my article, you can always contact me by sending me an email and I will give you a call. My email address is [email protected]

To a lot of Singaporeans, the Ronald McDonald House Charities is unknown. Therefore, I would like to encourage our Hollandse Club Members who do not know this initiative, to visit the website: www.rmhc.org.sg and tell your friends about it.

ABOuT RONALd MCdONALd HOuSE CHARITIES® The mission of RMHC Singapore is to create, find or support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. In Singapore, the charity was incorporated in 1984 and has helped over 900 Singaporean children receive urgent medical, surgical and rehabilitative treatment. Motivated by our mission, the first Ronald McDonald HouseTM (RMH) in Singapore was constructed and opened in January 2013 at National University Hospital (NUH). The charity is registered under the Societies Act and depends purely on the generosity of supporters.

In order for RMHC Singapore to fulfil its mission and to operate the RMH, we need the support of volunteers and sponsors working together with our staff and management. To find out more, visit our website www.rmhc.org.sg or contact us through:

My four-year-old daughter taps me lightly on the

shoulder. ‘Mama, there’s a monkey in the kitchen…’

Again, I sigh, and walk over to have a look. In the kitchen I see the intruder, playing with a bowl on the worktop. I shout, wave my arms, and he dashes off. Just in front of the window, he sits down, sniggers and bares his pointy teeth. Then he wanders off, munching on his bootie, a large onion. Not too long ago I complained about my small balcony, and the lack of wild in my life. I should have been careful what I wished for.

After our last intercontinental move I vowed it would be the last one, at least for a long, long time. Moving six times in seven years and three countries was enough. And yet, nine months later I find myself surrounded by boxes

once again. My own fault; I am a nomad and always think pastures are greener elsewhere. And they were, in this case. It took only one look at the house for me to fall in love. It was a picturesque black and white bungalow, where you could just see the memsahibs slurping their tea on the veranda. Not to mention the large, lush garden, bordering a nature reserve, where noise is made by the jungle, not by construction workers. We could just put in a bid, couldn’t we? We wouldn’t get it anyway?

Well we did, and just before the school holidays I started calling removal companies, packing up breakables and sorting out the accumulated mess five people create in only nine months. And there was the small issue of getting out of

the lease of our old apartment early. The landlord proves accommodating; he will let us out if we find a new tenant. Not wanting to rely on his less than capable agent we pull in all our (online) networks and get lucky again. Our new landlord, the government, is also friendly enough; just slow; every action requires at least ten emails and five phone calls.

The new house is as empty as can be. No aircon, no kitchen appliances, no curtains. Fortunately, help is all around. Singaporean friends donate aircons, Dutch friends recommend movers, an American brings a cheap used fridge, an online connection suggests a handyman, the new neighbours pest-control companies and gardeners. In those nine months we have build a network that has made this one of the smoothest moves I ever made. And I

made a few.

So now it is time to enjoy. We sit on the veranda, watching squirrels and monkeys wave through the trees. We listen to the sound of cicadas and colourful birds. We try not to get spooked by stories of wild boar or black spitting cobras, of trees falling on houses, or mould infestations. We focus, unsuccessfully so far, on spotting one of the elusive flying lemurs this area is known for. Our new house is not just a house. It is an adventure. We will stay there for years, at least. Really!

MOVING ONBY KARIEN VAN DITZHUIJZEN

Hello! My name is Nedda Chaplin and I have joined the Club Magazine committee as the proofreader and copy-editor. I check articles for any spelling or grammatical errors before they are published in the magazine. I moved to Singapore two and a half years ago with my husband, Kent, and three children, Sam, Noah and Martha. Joining the Hollandse Club was the best decision we made – we are there nearly every day for kids’ swimming lessons, waterpolo training, gym, dinner or just relaxing.

So, after two exhausting years lounging by the pool, and with all the kids now at school, I thought it was about time that I went back to work! I am studying to qualify as a proofreader and copy-editor; the work on the Magazine is great practical experience for me.

So keep sending in your articles – it’s your magazine. I look forward to reading them!

He uses only the freshest red and green apples to make this heartwarming desert. Usually making 3 of them at one go, last week he upped that number to 5 due to the demand at the Terrace.

Look out for more of Jin Feng’s desserts in time to come!

Tell us more about your background, have you always been working in the fitness industry?

I began my career after an accident that almost destroyed my cervical vertebrae. With the help of my physiotherapist, I managed to recover after some time. This got me interested in the mechanics of the body and I started off as an assistant to my physiotherapist before I moved into personal training. To date, I have been in the fitness industry for about 14 years now.

When did you discover your interest in fitness and what do challenges do you face in your career?

My interest in fitness evolved during my school days but was only able to pursue the career after I had completed my army training. The toughest thing on a day to day basis is being able to understand each and every individual’s body needs.

What are the characteristics of a good personal trainer?

A good trainer will understand what the trainee needs and work towards the goal of the trainee but also be able to think outside the box to create a workout that suits the requirements of the trainee. You need experience as well as good qualifications, and most importantly, have a cheerful and an open-minded character to get the trainee through the personal training session.

At the moment, how many of the club members do you provide the personal training sessions to?

I currently have 12 trainees whom I train on a permanent basis and about 10 who will engage in sessions when they are back from business trips.

What’s your schedule at the club?

I am mostly booked in the morning as early as 6am to about midday. At times, if the member requests an earlier session, I will be at the gym as early as 5am.

How can the members engage to your personal training sessions?

Initially, members can book a trial session to get a fitness assessment complete, which will give me an understanding of what type of programme is needed. Then I can start to customize a tailored work out to suit that individual. All members are able to book a session with me through the reception or by simply coming to speak to me at the gym. Additionally, my phone number can be found in the club magazine.

How does regular gym sessions contribute to a healthy and balanced lifestyle?

It is only with gym work that we are able to increase our strength and power; however it is also with the gym that we have no excuses not to exercise.

How often should one train during the week?

The very much depends on the needs and the goals of the individual. The normal average is somewhere between 3 and 5 times a week, for about 40 mins to an hour per session. It is important to note that the body must have ample time to rest in order for the body to recover probably.

Are there any fitness tips you would like to share with the readers?

Basically, before anyone starts a workout, it is best to have your routine planned and ready. I’ve seen many gym-users adopt the wrong techniques and practices, so it is always wise to do some research before trying a new workout. But the best thing to do is engage a personal trainer to guide you through the correct techniques and provide you with exercises specific to your needs.

What advice would you give someone that has never used a gym before?

Never be afraid to give it a try and you can always ask the staff at the gym or the sports department to assist you in usage of the gym.

What do you think about the accessibility and reliability of training advice on the internet?

The information relating to training is very accessible through the internet, but sadly it is not reliable as not all workouts can be done by everyone. We have seen a dozens of training techniques and methods on the internet, but how sure can you be that you are executing the exercise correctly? There are certain questions like which muscles are involved in this exercise, what is the best posture for this exercise, what is the best tempo and what is the ideal heart rate? I believe we can never find that out through internet research, this comes from practical experience in the gym.

What are your views on the use of supplements?

There are positive and negative viewpoints on the use of supplements. The best choice you can make is to go for natural food sources. Supplements are normally only beneficial for serious athletes or those who are not eating well enough.

Finally, do you have a motto for gym training?

The motto I have lived with is ‘Fitness is Infinity’

HOCKEY NEWSHollandse Club Hockey is alive and kicking in 2013 with flourishing ladies, men’s and kids leagues.

The ladies continue to sport a high quality / high energy and exceptionally good looking team and have done well in the 2013 competition. This year they even played the National Women League 1 (previously called the Premier League).

Unfortunately the team had quite a few injuries and couldn’t always field a full team. Consequently, the ladies did not finish the league to their own expectations. This August they will join the Women’s hockey liga 2013 so they will have another shot at bringing home a cup for the Hollandse club!

The men have added an extra team in 2013 due to high demand and we now have three men’s teams with good quantity (and quality!) players and a solid base to continue to build on and secure the Club’s high standard in Singapore hockey.

The kids league continues its longstanding success with overwhelming interest on Sunday mornings between 9 - 10am for the younger kids and between 10 – 11am for kids grade 4 (groep 6) and up. Youth hockey is played on the pitch at CCAB (21 Evans Road), close to Hollandse Club.

The huge interest from both Hollandse Club members as well as kids from many other nationalities and other social clubs is a great testament to the organizers and coaches of the kids hockey. There are 125 kids playing hockey each Sunday! It’s a great social and sportive event that clearly meets the needs of our members and beyond. The Hollandse Club’s men’s first team won the Division 1 2013 league with 86 goals scored in 14 matches! An excellent result in a tough division and a compliment to the deep bench strength of the men’s A team! The men’s second and third team have just started their battles in Division 2 and 4. As defending Division 2 champions, the B-team started the new season with a win (4-3 against St. Andrews Alumni) and they have set their ambition on winning the competition again this year…a tough challenge in a division that is getting stronger every year. The men’s C-team will start their first season on 17 August in Division 4 (the lowest division where all new teams start), which promises some interesting athletic high points and plenty of scoring fireworks (the current leader in Division 4 have scored 38 goals in 3 games!).

Hockey in Singapore continues to be a popular sport with many tournaments played outside of the regular competitions. We have the traditional annual ZOAT (South East Asia

Tournament) coming up in early October and this year hosted by Hollandse Club Singapore with participating ‘Hollandse’ teams from Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Shanghai, and Thailand. We also organize the annual “Wooden Shoe” hockey tournament where we invite a variety of teams from the Singapore hockey league. This season we expect the Wooden Shoe tournament to take place in January 2014.

In addition there are a number of other tournaments where Hollandse Club Hockey members can participate in, including some international tournaments in places like Bangkok, Jakarta and Vietnam and other great hockey and holiday destinations.

We’re always happy to welcome new players, so feel free to contact the hockey section to join a training practice on Wednesday nights and join one of the teams.

dAVIS CuP 2013The Davis Cup event at the Hollandse Club is one of the yearly highlights on the tennis calendar. It is a yearly two day tennis tournament between nations. It offers a great opportunity to represent your country or continent in both a competitive and fun based tournament, catering all levels of play. Each teams consists of beginners, intermediates and advanced. Ranking points ensure that teams are of similar level. The tournament is played in a round robin format offering all team members equal play time.

Due to it's unique format, in which different levels of players form double teams based on ranking points, all Nations stand a chance to win the Davis Cup.

Next to the competitive element, the Davis Cup tournament is an excellent opportunity to become part of the tennis community of the Hollandse Club. Members who are looking to meet new potential tennis partners or want to test their tennis ability should also join. It is a great social event with a barbecue on the last day, open for players, partners and childeren.

Throughout the years, usually more than 10 different Nations or continents have competed in very tight matches, the winner usually decided on the last day. A chance to become Davis Cup winner and being immortalised on the Winner Board in the Clubhouse is an attractive prospect for a lot of players. Although a tournament for fun primarily, the competitive edge kicks in when the matches become closer and closer. Emotions are expressed depending on background and nationality, ranging from emotional outcries in Spanish to Dutch rationale. It is a great family day as well, usually attracting whole families to the tennis court.

I have played many Davis Cup matches myself and have always the enjoyed the competitive and social element of the tournament. A true must for any tennis player and for anyone keen to be part of the Hollandse Club tennis society. I hope to see you at the tournament.

Squash Report AugustSince the last report, we managed to hold our internal squash tournament which was set up so that all participants seemed to play a vast number of games, regardless of their standard. We managed to get a good turnout of players and each and every one played their matches with true spirit but there was one player whose focus seemed to be on engineering their results to take the path of least resistance.

The games started on Friday evening to alleviate the normal rush and crush we have experienced in the past and by Saturday evening many of the matches were completed, giving us time to christen our new club area. Sunday’s four finals saw Robson beat Erik, Wendell overcome a very determined Maureen and Ben (Dubai bound) finishing off his squash tenure here in Singapore by beating Remi 3-2. And so to the main draw where our newest talent, James Spalding, took on the ever effervescent Ross Stokes. Ross, journeying to the club on his electric skateboard, trying valiantly to pass as a youthful surfer dude, huffed and puffed his way through the match and in actual fact put in a valiant effort, but James was just too strong on the day. Congratulations James…

SQUASH NEWS

Aside from that, news is thin on the ground because of the summer holidays but we are starting our new squash year from August 26th and the squash section can reflect on an excellent year where our motley crew have played above expectation (in most cases). More importantly, we have seen more players join the club and so both the team and social events are becoming increasingly enjoyable. So a thank you to all the members for your efforts and contribution during the course of the year and we are looking forward to seeing you again next squash year.

Next up we have the annual Orange Bowl on the 31st August against the Singapore Cricket Club. We have won the last two events and we are sure that the SCC will be very determined to get revenge. We then have the Cosmo League which is a squash tournament set up between us and other Sports Clubs. Finally, we are in the process of setting up the Hollandse Club Racquet Challenge where a team from the squash Club will play both squash and tennis against a team from the tennis club, with the winner being crowned the Hollandse Club Racquets Champions.

As we have said before, the Squash Club is always looking for new members and so if you feel you have the desire to pick up a squash racquet, suffer badly in non air-conditioned courts and meet a group of eclectic, world players then come down to the courts on Saturday afternoons from 14.30 for our social and have a go.

Otherwise you can email either Daniel Gelinas: [email protected] or Paul Roberts: [email protected]

What is the book about? The book is about an evil curse that descends upon affluent Princeton, America at the turn of the 19th century. Woven into the complex story is vast historical detail about the founding families of Princeton, and the prevailing attitudes in America after the abolition of the slave trade.
