The altar table is a sacred place. Upon it, we place candles representing that Christ is the light in our world; a cross proclaiming our victory through Christ; and the Bible professing that we are a people who trust God’s Word. This table is also the place where are tithes are offered to God and God’s offering of communion is placed before us. The altar is also adorned with colors of white, purple, red, and green. White is used to celebrate the Christmas and Easter seasons. It is also used on communion Sundays and a few other special Sundays during the year. Purple is the color that represents preparation. It is used during the seasons of Advent and Lent. Red symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit and is used on Pentecost. The final color is green, which symbolizes growth, and is used between the Lent/Easter and the Advent Christmas seasons. As important as the altar is, the presence of music stands, chairs, and the paneled wall kept it from being a focal point for us. On Easter Sunday, that all changed when we unveiled a beautiful lighted backdrop. As we are in the Easter season, the glass is illuminated in white. As we move into Pentecost and the summer months, we will see red and green illuminate the backdrop. Our altar has again become a focal point of our sanctuary and of our worship. I invite you let it be a constant reminder for you of the light, Word, cross, offerings, communion, and the seasons of worship.

Holly Calvary UMC “A Life-Giving Church”

Connecting people to people and people to Jesus through

the gift of life-giving relationships.

Coach’s Corner: The Altar

Easter Sunday was a powerful celebration of our life in Christ as we again proclaimed the salvation power that came through the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior. Up From the Grave He Arose and Christ the Lord is Risen Today immersed us in a time of deep worship.

As we looked at the front of the church, adorned with a white burial cloth around the cross and banners proclaiming Christ’s rising, our eyes were also drawn to the altar.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL IS COMING!

Our theme this is year is “Mars and Beyond”. It will be on July 29th – Aug 2nd from 6-8 p.m. We will have singing, crafts, snacks, storytelling and games. It is great fun for everyone! There are flyers and postcards available to send to the kids aged K-6th grade (in the fall) that YOU know! Thank you to those who volunteered to help with VBS this year. We will be having a short VBS meeting after church on June 2nd. We will be discussing the theme, the schedule, safe sanctuary guidelines and t-shirt sizes. If you have volunteered, but cannot attend, please contact Barb Nickels at 248-904-6899 or email at [email protected].

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 18th! We will be having a blood drive and Mega Kids will receive a donation for each successful donation or attempt. Please contact Barb Nickels or Ellen Pease if you can help or would like an appointment to donate.

I am in need of people to help call and make appointments, set-up, bring food, work the cookie table, and help clean-up. Please sign-up in the hallway.

Coach’s Corner: The Altar (continued) How did it happen? Nearly a year ago, the Worship Committee began discussing ideas on how to make our altar a focal point. We were blessed to find out that our extended church family has hidden talents. Janet Shiel’s daughter-in law, Rebecca Shiel, crafted an image that used illuminated glass rather than simple wood background. Cecil & Nancy Parson’s son-in-law, Mike Webb, did the final design, and then crafted the frame and glass to work perfectly with our existing altar table. Thank you to all who were involved in visioning and designing. A special Thank You to Mike, for giving this altar as a gift to the church.

To God be the glory,

Pastor Cliff

Your Sister in Christ – Judy Wood

Library Corner – by Judy Wood

Mama, Get the Hammer! There’s a Fly on Papa’s Head- by Barbara Johnson

The humor and illustrations in this book cracked me up. This time Barbara zeroes in on the therapeutic benefit of a smile and laughter. One of the quotes that made me laugh was to forgive your enemies, but never forget their names. This book incorporates scripture as well as humor to handle life. Bad times come but with Jesus you can find the humor and laugh at the situation and just handle life’s mishaps. Nothing maybe perfect and life may give bad and good than bad again but we can learn to laugh and keep our joy and hope and manage our stress and pain.

When Life is Unfair – written by Fr. Larry Richards A child is born with a deformed face, blind and believed to be deaf….is life unfair? What if this child turns out to be one of the greatest piano players and millions of people through numerous charities step up to help? Fr. Richards reminds us that when life seems unfair God is still in control and can turn situations around and brings blessings too numerous to count.
