Statements of commitments
• WerecognisethattheHolocaustshookthefoundationsofmoderncivilisation.Itsunprecedentedcharacterandhorrorwillalwaysholduniversalmeaning.
• WebelievetheHolocaustmusthaveapermanentplaceinournation’scollectivememory.Wehonourthesurvivorsstillwithus,andreaffirmoursharedgoalsofmutualunderstandingandjustice.
• WemustmakesurethatfuturegenerationsunderstandthecausesoftheHolocaustandreflectuponitsconsequences.WevowtorememberthevictimsofNazipersecutionandofallgenocides.
• Wevaluethesacrificesofthosewhohaveriskedtheirlivestoprotectorrescuevictims,asatouchstoneofthehumancapacityforgoodinthefaceofevil.
• Werecognisethathumanityisstillscarredbythebeliefthatrace,religion,disabilityorsexualitymakesomepeople’slivesworthlessthanothers’.Genocide,anti-semitism,racism,xenophobiaanddiscriminationstillcontinue.Wehaveasharedresponsibilitytofighttheseevils.
• WepledgetostrengthenoureffortstopromoteeducationandresearchabouttheHolocaustandothergenocides.Wewilldoourutmosttomakesurethatthelessonsofsucheventsarefullylearnt.
• WewillcontinuetoencourageHolocaustremembrancebyholdinganannualUKHolocaustMemorialDay.Wecondemntheevilsofprejudice,discriminationandracism.Wevalueafree,respectful,anddemocraticsociety.

The27thJanuarymarksadayinwhichtheworldstandstogetherforHolocaustMemorialDay.AtimewherepeoplecometogethertorememberthedevastationanddestructioncausedbytheHolocaust,genocidesandpersecutionsonaworldwidescale.
York’sHolocaustMemorialDayprogrammeisinfluencedbythenationalthemeof,‘Howcanlifegoon?’,engagingwithpartnersbothinsideandoutsidethecitytocreateaprogrammeofvariedeventsthatcommemoratethepast,explorethepresentandchallengeusasindividualsandasacommunitytoconsiderhowwecanmakeadifferencetothefuture.
Notonlydowecollectivelyshareanobligationtoremembereventsofthepastbuttoremembertheindividualswhowerevictimsofworldwideatrocities,commemoratingtheoneswhodiedandstandingbesidethosewhomanagedtosurvive.
Weinviteyoutojoinus,totakealookathowlifedoesgoonandhowwecanstandunitedinaworldwheregenocideandpersecutionaremorepresentthanwemayrealise.
