Holocaust Memorial Day 27 January 2018 Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on 27 January each year, (the date the largest Nazi death camp at Auschwitz- Birkenau was liberated). It is a date to remember the millions of people who were murdered and persecuted during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and subsequent genocides. The Power of Words The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s theme for 2018 is ‘the power of words’. We encourage everyone to use positive words to good effect. Your voice or powerful words, thoughts, reflections, stories or case studies can help people learn lessons from the past. Help eradicate discrimination, reject hate crime or incitement of hate crime and prejudice across County Durham. Get Involved - the following events are open to members of the public to attend: Date Time Event Monday, 22 January to Thursday, 25 January 2018 10am – 6pm Durham Cathedral • Porrajmos exhibition (Gypsy holocaust) • Service* and Porrajmos exhibition Friday, 26 January 2018 1pm – 3pm Saturday, 27 January 2018 10am – 3.30pm 10am – 3.30pm Durham Town Hall • Holocaust and Porrajmos exhibition • Real life stories available to view from the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and Durham Light Infantry archives • Opportunity to reflect and express your own ‘power of words’ St Nicholas’ Church, Durham City Market Place • Short act of commemoration at 1pm • Opportunity to light candles until 3.30pm. Saturday, 27 January 2018 2.30pm 4pm – 5pm Durham Dales Centre – Stanhope • Creative writing and poetry workshop Durham Dales Centre Café - Stanhope • Sharing and performance of spoken word and poetry Tuesday, 30 January 2018 7pm East Durham College – The Lubetkin Theatre • ‘Son of Saul’ film viewing. Library displays Some County Durham libraries will display Holocaust Memorial Day information from week starting 22 January.
