  • Despite many farmers busy out in the fields,

a very decent entry of calves travelled to

Holsworthy from as far afield as Truro in

Cornwall & Barnstaple in North Devon.

Top of the baby calves came in from Andy Hutton

of Hatherleigh for a Limousin bull reaching £402

with another at £388. Messrs Clarke of Winkleigh

hit £380 for his best Blue bull going off to

Honiton. Rob Veale of Halwill hit £350 for the

best of his 3 Blue bulls with others from the

Morrow family of Truro who saw the best of 10

hit £310. Herefords were in short supply and as

a result sold to a premium with the best in from Danny Norman

at £305 going off to its new home in Gloucestershire.

Heifer calves sold to a top call of £360 for Messrs Bass of Bodmin

whilst 3 top quality Charolais heifers came in from Nigel Gear of

Barnstaple and sold at £358 & £352 (2) for 29 day old calves!

Mike Hopper of Whitstone hit £342 for his best Blue heifers (41

days) and a further 10 vendors up and over the £300 bracket.

Holstein bulls saw another very strong trade with Andy Hutton

at £130, Andrew Gilbert of Sheepwash at £120 (2), Messrs

Petherick of Kilkhampton at £98 and a delighted Graham Duke

of Werrington at £85 (2) for 28 day old Holsteins.

A nice entry of stirks forward topped at £568 for a 6mth Blue from Messrs Rockett of Bridestowe with plenty of

    3-4mth stirks between £380-£440.

Next week – 70 Stirks to include 18 Aberdeen Angus heifers (named sires) 6-8mths plus 12 single suckled

    Simmental / Charolais stirks 4-7mths.

Speaking after the sale Kivells auctioneer James Morrish said “Another excellent week for our calf customers and a big

thank you to our staff especially Will Bromell who also leaves us to return to University this week. Good Luck Will!”

  • With Autumn now upon us buyers were becoming more selective.

Good cattle still sold to good trade but generally easier than previous weeks. The stronger 18mth plus cattle were

again over £1000 with a top of £1095 for a young single suckled Limousin from Mr M Elderfield of Launcells and

£1095 was also achieved for a 22mth Simmental from Mr F Bown of Northlew with a 17mth Stabilizer steer from

Messrs Marshall of Chilsworthy £1080. Stronger Dairy x steers also £1000+ with £1065 for a Montbeliarde from

MR C Kivell with others from the same farm at £1065 and £1060. Stronger 20mth heifers saw most over £900,

£1010 being the top price for a 17mth Charolais from Mr D Challacombe of Winkleigh. Limousins from M Elderfield

of Bude at £945, Blonde Aquataine heifers from Messrs Hutton at £910 with other Limousins from Mr D

    Challacombe selling to £905.

Good quality young cattle were in short supply a run of 13 & 14mth Dairy x British Blue steers form Mr R Wood

of Thornbury topped at £1000 with his other 5 realizing £880. Vendors may be well advised to consider moving

cattle sooner rather than later as several cattle are starting to slip condition.

Holstein steers sold well, top being £855 for a steer from Messrs Wade of Welcombe with other stronger framed

    Holsteins at £780. Younger 16-18mth Holsteins £620-£680.

GRAZING COWS A short entry saw 10yr old non-farm assured Limousins

from Messrs Whittaker of Clawton realise £580 (2) with others from the same

farm at £490. Plain Holsteins topped at £475 for a cow from Messrs J&S Davey

    of Clovelly.

OTM WEIGHING COWS Top price was 125p for a 940kg Devon cow

realising £1175 from Mr C Wooldridge of Okehampton.

FINISHED CATTLE 2 Limousin steers from Mr D Soper of North Petherwin realized 170p topping at £1078.

  • Weekly Market

A good quality entry met a significantly easier trade. Despite

the harvest weather a large crowd of active buyers was

present around the ring. Bidding remained keen but prices

were back across the board by approximately £400 and

buyers went home with good cattle that looked good value

against the trade in recent months.

Fresh milk topped at £2,020 for a large, powerful second

calver ‘Janeck Armour Blomke GP83’ yielding 47.3 Kgs and sold

by the Mott family of Ranches Ltd, Okehampton. Selling at

    £1,600 was a second calver, ‘Coppicepark Carole 64 VG85’,

yielding 35 Kgs on behalf of Mark Hillson from Yelverton.

A good run of freshly calved heifers saw a much steadier

trade to recent months topping at £1,600 for ‘Janeck Shilling Baby G79’, calved 1st July, yielding 37 Kgs sold on behalf

of the Mott family of Ranches Ltd, Okehampton. Messrs. H Burrows & Sons of Woolacombe sold a 31 Kgs heifer,

‘Glendene Grazie Mermaid’, at £1,500. Numerous good quality heifers sold between £1,400 and £1,500 including

Paul Nicholls of Penzance, Phil Reed of Holsworthy, Dave & Sheree Turner of Torrington, Ranches Ltd of

Okehampton and Roger Dennis of Looe.

In calf heifers also saw a significantly steadier trade to recent months. Topping the in calf heifer section at £1,350

was Mr R T Hancock of Torrington with a heifer due in mid-October to Welsh Black. Mr Hancock sold other

heifers at £1,300 and £1,250. An excellent run of in calf heifers from Warman Farm Partnership of Delabole topped

at £1,320 twice. An excellent run of heifers from RJ & A Dennis of Looe saw these two year old smart heifers top

at £1,320. In calf heifers due December saw a large drop in values and looked good value for buyers.

Heifer calves topped at £210 on behalf of Mr R E Anguish of the ‘Dunbarton’ herd from Camborne.

Dispersal Sale of the ‘Maxworthy’ Herd

The second consignment of the ‘Maxworthy’ dispersal followed the weekly market. Trade was significantly easier

but the ring remained busy with active buyers’ right through the sale. This consignment did contain quite a high

proportion of cows with faults such as light and 3/4’d udders and these cattle reduced the overall averages.

There was very limited fresh milk in this sale and the fresh milk trade topped at £1,365 for a second calving cow

yielding 43 Kgs. Also selling well at £1,313 was a freshly calved Norwegian Red Cross heifer yielding 34.5 Kgs but

selling with variance in the udder. Dry cows topped at £1,134 for a heifer due December from the ‘Shars’ family.

Autumn calving cattle remained in firm demand topping at £1,386 for a second calving cow due in November. Spring

calving cattle topped at £1,239 for a first calving heifer due in April 2021 but sold outside of the National Warranty.

The sale included some heavy yielding in milk cattle that will put milk in purchasers tank cost effectively.

The youngstock included a run of served heifers which topped at £756 originating from the ‘Raven’ family. Bulling

heifers topped at £714 for a Norwegian Red Cross heifer at fourteen months old. Calves topped at £242 for a

group of three four week old calves.
