“It is my hope that they will seriously consider thelong-reaching ramifications of their choices and it is myfear that this knee-jerk reaction is in response to otherschool districts in the area giving up on their programsdue to dismal AYP scores.

“I worry that we are succumbing to political pressuresthat do not adequately take into consideration the needsof our “at-risk” population.”

Former and current students addressed the board aswell as James Rauschert, a former teacher who retired

last year and established the program 30 years ago.Holt’s alternative education program serves 50-100 stu-

dents each year. Many of the students are there becausethey had difficulty learning in the traditional high schoolsetting.

“These kids are not going away,” Beerbower wrote.“Many are already knocking on the door from otherschool districts.”

Board member Deb Roeske said she and the rest ofthe board couldn’t comment on the issue at the meetingbecause it is too early to form an opinion.

“There hasn’t even been a recommendation yet,”

Roeske said. “But we were happy to listen to the con-cerns that were being voiced.”

Beerbower is adamant that as far as the students areconcerned, the difference is how they learn.

She said she assessed the learning styles of a sampleof students.

“An overwhelming majority, almost 93 percent, of thestudents were kinesthetic learners (which means thatthey are very tactile and learn best when they can handleand examine materials).”

Beerbower noted that this style of learning can best beused at the current school.

HOLT — After four years of history-making basketball, it’s tough to fathom thelast time East Lansing’s girls basketballteam entered a game having lost two oftheir previous three.

But after a tough end to December, afamiliar opponent and familiar motivationFriday helped the Trojans climb out of thatrare situation.

East Lansing won its 37th straight CAACBlue game on Jan. 7 - dating back to thefirst league game of 2007-08 - by downinglongtime rival Holt, 71-48.

East Lansing (4-2, 2-0 CAAC Blue)opened with a 22-4 first-quarter run andtook a 48-17 advantage into halftime. TheTrojans hit 60 percent of their shots fromthe floor during the first 16 minutes andforced 10 turnovers.

East Lansing bumped its lead to 35 dur-ing the third quarter.

“As good as we’ve been over the years, that first half, if not the best, was one of thebest performances we’ve had at East Lan-sing,” Trojans coach Rob Smith said.

“I know it’s early to say this is a hugegame. But in terms of the conference, wewanted to win this game so we can contin-ue to build and not chase.”

Holt (3-4, 0-1) is one of the teams ex-pected to give East Lansing a challenge thiswinter. The Rams did outscore the Trojans31-23 in the second half, and senior guardMandy Johnson had 19 points and five re-bounds. But by the time Holt hit its stride, the deficit was too deep.

“We felt pretty good coming into (Fri-day). I think sometimes kids turn teamsinto giants based on what they’ve done inthe past. There was a little freak-out factorthere early on,” Holt coach Doug Harkemasaid. “We came in at halftime and talkedabout starting over. ... Through six games,we’d come out and competed and lookedlike a really good team.”

Senior guard Deborah Hoekstra scoreda game-high 23 points to lead East Lansingand also grabbed six rebounds. Juniorguard Aimee Konkel scored 12 points, andsophomore center Kelcie Haizlip added 11.

Senior center Emily Klauka added 11points and junior forward Haley Powersgrabbed 11 rebounds for the Rams.

HASLETT — Holt coachMatt Essell’s teams arecommonly known ashardworking, aggressive, de-fense-oriented teams. Theyrun their offense throughtheir big-men and look towork the ball inside.

However, this year’sgroup has a new look, andthey are adding a new di-mension to their game: greatshooting.

Tim Scott had 20 pointsand 10 rebounds, while Jor-dan Herron added 14 points, carrying the hot-shootingRams past Haslett 56-55 in aCAAC crossover game Jan.11.

The Rams shot a season-high 52 percent from thefloor in the victory.

“Minus some silly turn-overs here and there, Ithought we we’re exception-al on the offensive end to-night,” said Essell, whoseteam turned the ball over 21times in the victory. “We’regetting a ton of layups now, which allows to be so effec-tive offensively.”

This game featured twoevenly matched teams thatwent back-and-forth tradingbaskets throughout the con-test. With the score tied at 51and just under a minute re-maining in the game, JordanHerron made an acrobaticlayup while getting fouled. He hit the free throw to givethe Rams a three-point lead.

After Haslett senior Pres-ton Watson split a pair offree throws, the Rams wereable to get a quick layup onthe other end from Scott, giv-ing them a four-point advan-tage with only six secondsremaining on the clock.

Holt survived a scare asHaslett senior Zach Parkerleaned into a Holt defenderand hit a 3-pointer as timeexpired.

“I thought they we’re go-ing to call a foul and myheart dropped,” Herron said.“I just remember looking atthe ref and hoping that hewouldn’t blow his whistle.”

The ref did not blow thewhistle as the shot swishedthrough the basket and thebuzzer sounded, leaving theRams with a one-point vic-tory.

“I told the guys to let himhave the shot. I didn’t wantanyone to be anywhere nearhim,” Essell said. “That wasway too close for comfort.”

Parker led Haslett with ateam-high 20 points. SeniorZach Porritt added 13 pointsand five assists for Haslett(4-2).

“We felt like we couldgo toe-to-toe with them, make some good thingshappen, give ourselves achance to win at the end,and that’s what happened,”Haslett coach Rob Porrittsaid. “Unfortunately for us,we didn’t come out witha win, which leaves thesekids crushed because theywe’re really looking forwardto this game.

“This is one of thosegames that they had circledon their schedule when theyfirst saw it. But this is a goodgroup of players that will beable to bounce back fromthis, even though it hurts alittle right now.”
